Thread: "Transitioning swaddles?"

I feel like there’s not much to keep up in terms of safe sleep? Have the guidelines changed recently? I find these fb groups have more stringent guidelines than what the professional associations say and the more stringent guidelines are not actually evidenced based. That’s why you find different ones with different opinions about what’s truly safe depending on what the mods or consensus group members arrive to. None of them have actually done any studies on the products they recommend or say to avoid. The guidelines say swaddle until 8 weeks OR roll over. These groups seem to think if you swaddle past 8 weeks you’re going to kill your baby. That’s not evidence based. None of my kids were close to rolling over at 8 weeks so we swaddled beyond that. The first two transitioned cold turkey to a sleep sack. My third needs a little more help and is currently in a zipadee at 13 weeks. I feel so strongly about this because you know what’s more dangerous than swaddling a potato baby who’s not rolling at 10 weeks old? Parents who are so tired they fall asleep with their baby in their bed, recliner, couch because you’ve taken away every tool available to their baby to sleep independently and self soothe in the name of “safe sleep”.

Zipadee is different. Their website says they are safe for rolling babies and there is actually a minimum age/size to use them and they have sizes up toddler. It is more of a transition sack than a swaddle and is designed for babies to be able to roll and move in. The love to dream is the same as regular swaddle once baby start to show signs of rolling (or some advise 8 weeks as a percaution since they will often start rolling soon after that) they need to transition to arms free. I'm not familiar with that brand specifically but it looks like after swaddles they sell transition sacks and regular sleep sacks.

I would recommend moving to transitional swaddles or arm out. The first few days might be a bit tough as they get used to having more freedom, but it gets better! The love to dream, zipadee, and baby Merlin magic sleep suites were all recommend to my husband and I.

That is so bizarre because when I was in that group just a few years back they freaking loved the Zipadee, with photos of babies sleeping in them all the time 😂. I used it with my son with great success. I wonder if their concern is based on actual evidence or just theory.

The Zipadee-Zip was the key to our difficult swaddle transition.

Yes she is able to move her hands up to her face but I found we had the same issue with our normal halo sleep sack and she wakes herself up less doing it now with the zipadee. The zipadee also stifles the moro reflex a bit as well so it's a good transitional swaddle, plus safe for rolling and such. I know a lot of people keep their kids in the zipadee for well over a year just because their kids love them.

We used zipadee zip for our first and it worked very well! I bet you could find them (and other brands) on facebook marketplace for cheap since babies outgrow things so fast.

They make the zipadee-zips for up to two years olds so I don't think it's an issue. I liked them way better then the love to dream, because on those their arms are stuck in the same position. So once they roll I don't think you can use the love to dream anymore.

I use a knock off zippadee zap after a family member suggested it. Our baby only wakes to startles during naps, not at night. I'm sorry you had this panic. I absolutely understand your panic. I went through it at about 3-4 weeks when Bub got himself out of his muslin swaddle and was wearing it like a cowl neck. Thankfully, it was nap time and I caught it on the video monitor. I loudly decreed no more blanket swaddles. And yelled when my mil tried to place a blanket with him in the crib at her last visit. I wish you the utmost luck with tonight. ❤️

Yes the zipadee zips were amazing for our little one who had a strong startle reflex but was also an early roller! They are $$$ to order new but I found ours on Facebook marketplace. I also love that they have larger sizes as baby grows. Our little one is 8 months now and we just moved from the zipadee to a regular sleep sack.

Yeah let me know what you find, I am using Facebook on mobile and the search function isn’t great so I may not be finding the most relevant or recent posts on the Zipadee in that group. Best of luck with your new little one!

You can do the regular Love to Dream until he starts to roll. Otherwise, the Zipadee is a good transitional sack! My 4 month old will not sleep with arms out so the Zip is great for her. It’s a starfish shape and keeps arms in but is roomy enough to adjust if they roll. The Zip can technically be worn well into toddlerhood

He would actually suck the ends of the zipadee zip arms and it would get so stinky so fast. If he rubbed his face he learned to deal with it as a result of the sleep training.

Thread: "Tell me your experience with transition out of swaddle"

I have 3 kiddos so I’ve tried almost every option. With my first I was also doing a double swaddle because he kept busting out but then would get furious. I was so nervous about messing up his sleep I bought a Merlin. It worked of course but it wound up just being one more thing I had to wean from. With my second I did one arm out for a few days, then switched to the other side with one arm out for a few days then both. There were of course some disruptions, but nothing major. With my third I did a zipadee because she was 2m premature and by the time she was hitting 3/4m actual she still had a pretty strong startle reflex, but it was time to transition. All of that is to say it kind of depends on the kid. I’d suggest trying the arm out process because it costs you $0. It may be a little early unless your kiddo is showing signs of rolling. I usually began this process around 12ish weeks.

Zipadee or similar. Great for sleep training, keeping him warm or just prevent scratching his face. I got everything used but spent all my money on sleep sacks. Worth it.

I was looking into the zipadee just last night! Does it run the risk of covering LO’s mouth/nose? If not, I’m opening up Amazon RN!
