VTech VM901

The VTech VM901 is a video baby monitor that operates without WiFi, ensuring privacy and security. It features a 2.8-inch color display, remote pan and tilt capabilities, and night vision for monitoring your baby in low light.

Pros (+)

  • Reliable performance without WiFi for added security
  • Clear video quality and remote pan/tilt features
  • Affordable price point compared to premium monitors

Cons (−)

  • Battery life can be shorter than expected
  • Some users report dead zones in coverage
  • Buttons may not always function as intended

Why parents like it

Parents praise the VM901 for its straightforward setup and dependable video quality. The non-WiFi feature is a significant draw, allowing for peace of mind regarding security.

Common complaints

Several parents mention that the battery life is shorter than expected, requiring frequent recharging. A number of users also report experiencing dead zones where the signal is weak or lost.

Best for

Parents who want a straightforward, secure monitor without WiFi for peace of mind. The tradeoff is potential coverage issues and the need for regular battery management.

Bottom line

The VTech VM901 is a reliable video monitor for parents who prioritize security, though some may find the battery life and coverage areas lacking.

We got an affordable v tech one simply because I have the paranoid notion that if I am not looking at my child she will spontaneously learn to walk and leave her bed, or she’ll somehow magically acquire a blanket and cover herself with it. It helps to be able to take a glance and know they’re safe

That’s exact what ours is. It’s a vTech, and almost all of theirs come with the option to use the app over wifi, but we’ve deliberately never used that option, keep it switched off, and only use the monitor it comes with.

We went with a fairly cheap but reliable vtech audio-only monitor that works on local radio waves, and a Wyze cam that has video+two way sound and a phone app. I was kind of put off by bad reviews on the expensive video monitors, and reports of hacking, etc on companies that didn't do very well in IoT security. Total expense was about $55, and we have two units instead of one, so more redundancy, and most of the features of much more expensive monitors.

Thread: "Does a baby monitor like this really not exist?"

The VTech dual monitor does this. You can see both camera feeds and only hear one. The problem is that if you want to be able to hear both, the only option ive found is their 10 second rotating setting where it plays camera 1 audio and video for 10 seconds and then camera 2 audio and video for 10 seconds. There's no auto switch back and forth for sound detection or anything like that. They also have wifi enabled (can use phone app) and non wifi enabled I'm pretty sure Edit: To clarify you can't individually control the level of audio, but only one plays at a time.

Thread: "Baby monitors seem like a scam with how atrociously poor quality they are"

So we started with some cheap Amazon home security one and thought "this is awesome, why does anyone pay for a baby monitor?!", And then a few things were realized: - you have to always have an extra device dedicated to it in order to hear baby overnight (unless you don't use your phone before bed, in which case, snaps for you); - when your wifi is out, you have no baby monitor; - Amazon filters reviews, and even though our cheap one had great reviews, it lost connection frequently and required full out unplugging/plugging back in often. If it disconnected in the middle of the night, I had no way of knowing my baby was crying until the next morning. So, we got a separate, cheap, audio only one. This did just fine until he was older and we were trying to decide if we'd go in and check on him or let him work it out - we needed the camera to see if he was up and about or just dreaming. I caved and bought some VTech baby monitor and it's been great and reliable (and most certainly overpriced), but it has very few bells and whistles and does exactly what I want it to do 100% of the time.

I've got the Vtech Safe & Sound, maybe you could check that out. It's a video monitor so when you're awake you'll be able to see baby, and it can also vibrate instead of using the audio. There's a color indicator bar across the top of the screen that when baby cries and the monitor vibrates gives you an idea of how loud they are being. I actually keep mine of vibrate most of the time (so it doesn't wake up my husband) and sleep with it under my pillow - and it vibrates hard enough to wake me!

We use the VTech baby monitor, it has a standalone screen or can be used with an app. It works really well for us, you can control the camera just fine with either method but it’s nice to bring the screen with you around the house when baby is napping in the crib/basinet. You can pan the camera around the room, so you don’t have to necessarily worry about both cribs needing to be in view at once. The screen also gives you a visual indication if it’s accidentally muted but the baby is making noise. Plus a room temperature readout. Way cheaper than the $300 units and has plenty of good features.

We have the vtech 2 camera one with no wifi. It’s been great! I love not having it on my phone, and our second camera is installed at my parents’ so I only have to bring the monitor part with us when I take babe to their house for naps or a sleep over. Also, I make them take theirs down if we take babe to the cottage, so ours is always ready for when we come home! It’s been in use now for over a year, and we’ve had no complaints at all! Sometimes the battery icon isn’t super accurate but we charge it from 8am-1pm, and it lasts till 8am the next morning. Lasts from 1-3ish for her nap, then 830-730 at night!

It’s probably because people who are satisfied don’t bother to leave reviews. We have a vtech monitor and we like it, have never had any issues. (Nothing to compare it too though, it’s the only one we’ve ever used.) Batteries last decently long, video and sound quality are good, the screen is decent size, and we can turn on lullabies without going into the room if she wakes up in the middle of the night.

Thread: "Help Choosing A Baby Monitor"

I'm personally uncomfortable with the Wifi cameras as they are not particularly secure, and there's plenty of stories out there about stangers gaining access to mess with the sleeping baby. On the note of sharing with overseas parents - the thought is lovely, but what if you have the monitor on when bub is having an hours long meltdown? Or you/your partner walk in the room to attend to bub in a state of undress? No idea how comfortable you are with them but it just seems like an unneccessary device to switch on/off. If I were you I would use a photo sharing app with your parents so they can see photos and videos of your baby whenever they choose (plenty of options there depending on your preferences). Personally we use a Vtech video monitor from Big W. It is not connected to wifi. The parent unit doesn't really hold charge anymore after 2+ years so we just leave it plugged in nearby when she's asleep, not a big deal.

I like the video version but our simple vtech with no wifi has worked fine. That said, I think some extra features like pan/tilt/zoom would have gotten occasional use. Also some form of battery backup would be nice, we occasionally have extended power outages. This is not a terrible place to splurge because you will absolutely use the hell out of. Been there! Super overwhelmed. Stuck on reviews that seemed to all go south all of a sudden. Just couldn't decide. So we got an inexpensive V-Tech non-wifi one from Target (about $80) just to have something to give us time to thoroughly research and make an informed decision. A year later we are still using it with no problems. In hindsight, the only feature I wish I had was tilt and pan and 2 cameras. Which conveniently can be had in the next model up for $10 more. 😄

Husband and I are software engineers and neither of us felt comfortable getting a baby monitor that had internet access. Ours are local wireless signal. There’s a market for people getting access to cameras around children. Even if we did every secure thing as far as passwords, 2FA, and all that, you’re putting a lot of trust into the providers. Vtech had a digital camera for kids with cloud service a few years ago, their service got hacked into and all the photos, including accidentally sensitive ones were accessed. The company made the login portal vulnerable to SQL injection. Which is the equivalent of setting your password as “password” in this day and age.
