Pros (+)

  • Affordable price point for budget-conscious parents
  • No WiFi means reduced security risks
  • Long range and good battery life

Cons (−)

  • Connection issues reported when outside the house
  • Limited customer service experiences
  • No recording feature for monitoring overnight

I have a Wyze camera that I used to keep an eye on our cats while out of town. It's set up in the livingroom. Well, I got home from work one day & turned the camera to the wall bc I'm paranoid of someone hacking in, an hour later I look at it and it was turned directly towards me again & I'm the only one with app access so I know it definitely wasn't me, I stoppedc using it 🥲 When we had our son, I bought the hello baby monitor and it doesn't use wifi. It has worked great so far!

Same! I love that it has an actual monitor you can carry around the house and not have to load some app on your phone. It's basic but literally all you need. It even has a decent range if we take it out to the backyard to sit with neighbors by the fire while baby is sleeping.

Thread: "Pros vs cons of wifi baby monitor?"

I’m in cybersecurity - non wifi was non negotiable for me! We have the hellobaby one from Amazon and love it! An alternative to a baby monitor while you’re away is a regular house cam. We have Arlo cameras set up in our garage and at our doors. Could easily set one of those inside for checking in while away. I’d make sure to mention the cam to any sitters though if you go that route - especially if you have pets just be like we have them to watch the pets while we’re out - some people may not like being on camera!

Thread: "Best no BS baby monitor?"

We love our HelloBaby monitor. It was $60, it’s a non wifi camera and comes with the parent screen console so you don’t need your phone. Travels well, set up is easy. We don’t use any of the additional “features” in terms of lullaby or 2 way talking or anything. We have it on a high cry sensor so the screen is off and dark until she starts crying and then the camera flicks on. Easy peasy! Edit to add: I recommend keeping the box it came in! We didn’t when we first bought it and the screen was crushed in our suitcase so we had to get another. The box has slots for the camera, screen, and cords, so it keeps it all nice and safe and neat for travel!

I had an owlet camera when I had my first in 2021. When he was a couple months old I saw a video about these getting hacked into and I switched to a non-WiFi monitor. I have no idea about the connectivity though, unless it got connected by accident or automatically. I would honestly just switch, because that scares me. There are so many really good monitors out there that don’t require WiFi. The eufy spaceview was my favorite until my toddler ripped the antenna off. I have cheap hello baby one I use for travel. I also have a better quality hello baby I purchased when my eufy broke.

Wifi is actually quite easy to hack if you don't have solid security on your home network, and most people dont know that. These dang wifi baby monitors are hacked all the time! I'd personally toss the one you have and opt for one with no wifi capability. I use the HelloBaby monitor from Amazon. It's been used for 3.5 years now with no issue!

Second this. I avoided a WiFi monitor for this exact reason. Get one that transmits the picture from the camera to the monitor directly via radio, like hello baby. Cheap and excellent and no internet

Thread: "Nanit Camera Hacked"

Yeah my kids room is upstairs. If I step off the front porch or into the backyard I loose connection on my hello baby monitor. Which means if someone was that close they could just shout and he heard by him anyways. Quite frankly it'd be super obvious if someone was actively on our property and getting into range for the camera, so its not something I'm worried about. If someone is on my front porch creeping on my kid, they could do it without tech, and I could be aware of it just the same and could call the cops. Much safer than something someone could untraceable hack from the other side of the world. My spouse is in tech and knows the common vulnerabilities, so we don't IOT devices as much as we can afford.

Hellobaby uses 2,4Ghz network band, it transfers the video and sounds the same way that internet content gets to your phone over WiFi. so if they wanted to, they could hack that as well. But they would have to be physically closer to you (wifi-range) since you’re not connected to the internet.

I have the hello baby non wifi closed circuit and it’s great. I’m happy it’s not on my phone and is its own entity. I see some people mention they like to check when with the babysitter or nanny and if I feel that way when the time comes I would probably just install a ring or blink in the house for that kind of monitoring instead of using it as a baby monitor.

We have two - Hello baby and VTech. VTech has the option to connect to phones and add more cameras. We scared ourselves though by reading stories of monitors connected to WiFi being hacked and creeps talking to LO or videos being posted online. So we keep both monitors off of WiFi. It means the phone app doesn't work, but when we did have the app, we liked it. Hello baby is a great monitor for the crib or bassinet as it is super zoomed in as a default. VTech works better for a room as our model does panoramic as a default and only has blurry digital zoom...

Thread: "Baby monitor died overnight"

It has happened to us all (or will, anyway). Power outages happen, technology sometimes just goes wild, and sometimes we just forget to plug it in. There is no such thing as a perfect parent. Baby is safe, you're safe, it was an honest mistake. Remember that only one night away will not ruin an attachment just like only one night of responding to baby will not create an attachment. Snuggle your baby, give her extra kisses today and know that you are doing a great job. As a side note, if you want to avoid it in the future there are monitors that beep really loudly if the battery is low or a connection to the camera is lost (we use hellobaby and it's saved us on several occasions when we've either forgot to plug it in or our camera dies because of a power outage).

Thread: "Baby monitors - hellobaby"

It’s possible she bought this monitor and marked the one you wanted as purchased so no one else would purchase a monitor. Hello Baby is only on Amazon (I think) but it has great reviews. I use it and like it. Nothing too special but it’s not wifi enabled which was a must for usband has a good battery life and sound detection. Eta: yeah after a quick Amazon search I think that’s likely what happened. Hello Baby seems to be half the price and is the first option when I search baby monitor and has thousands of reviews. I don’t know your grandmother though. I do know some of my family decided they liked something different better and got that instead for us while marking as purchased on our registry.
