Thread: "Do not buy the Nanit baby monitor"
I love my Nanit. 1. I’m deaf and there aren’t many things out there that are accessible to deaf people. The Nanit sends alerts to my watch when my son is crying during the night. 2. Although not perfect but I love having a breathing monitor to make sure he’s okay all night long. 3. I used an old iPad and put it on sleep mode and plugged in all night when he was very young, it was super helpful. 4. It’s super helpful that it tracks how long he sleeps because I often forget when I put him down and I don’t have to remember when I have to wake him up from his 2 hour naps. Quick edit: I know it’s not easy to travel with but when I do, I just use the “baby sound” detection with my iPhone, which sends alerts to my watch to buzz me awake that he’s crying. I’m sorry it didn’t work for you but I wouldn’t put it down because it didn’t meet your needs as you hoped. I hope you found something that did.
Thread: "IT concerns over baby monitor?"
I'm a security professional. As one other commenter said, most of the issues are due to poor password practices and basic cyber hygiene. I use WiFi monitors because I like to check in on them when someone is babysitting. That being said, not all of them are built the same. I used HubbleClub - they have an ISO 27001 certification which essentially attests to their internal security practices, but their equipment kinda sucks so I stopped. Now we're using Nanit. Could it still get hacked, sure, but it's incredibly unlikely. Their software is their product, so they have a very strong incentive to keep it secure. Most of the 'hacks' you hear about is someone reusing passwords, and that PW ending up in a dump from some random sites, and then attackers try that same username/password across platforms. Use strong and unique passwords for everything. Use MFA wherever available. Keep your equipment up to date. Do those three things and you'll be doing better than 98% of people out there. Use WPA3 or at least WPA2 on your wifi. Disable WPS. Use a strong password for it. Even better, set up a second wifi network (most ISP modems can do this) and use that network specifically for your monitor so it's the only thing on it. Information Security is a lot like running from a bear in the woods. You don't have to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun the slowest person with you. The type of threat actors that attack baby monitors for lulz are lazy. They're going to go for the easy targets.

Not a Nanit ad being directly under this post in my feed 💀
Thread: "Do not buy the Nanit baby monitor"
My Nanit is ok. I have a feeling I could’ve found a cheaper alternative that does the same thing though. Mine never disconnects from internet and I already had a fire tablet so we just use that and leave it plugged in at night on our nightstand. Wish there was an easy way to travel with it.
Thread: "Not everyone can fork out 300 for a Owlet sock "
I’m glad you’re venting! Sometimes that’s all you need. But I wouldn’t stress too much about the Owlet sock… we have the Nanit body wrap to monitor breathing… we haven’t used it since week 1.. Looking around the house… we have so much crap that people said we needed but we haven’t actually used.. what works for one baby/family may not work for another. Keep doing what’s best for you and your baby!

Lol the post before this one on my feed was “Nanit saved my baby’s life”
Thread: "Do not buy the Nanit baby monitor"
We have the Nanit and we like it 🤷♀️ we’ve never had connection issues and I like having it on my phone. I pretty much always have my phone with me anyway so it’s convenient. You can always set it up on an iPad or something if you have one and want to conserve your phone battery.
Thread: "Please be careful with WiFi baby monitors"
We awoke to a man’s voice going “goo goo gahh gahh baby” at 4AM through our Nanit. The most unsettling feeling I’ve ever experienced. We received the same message verbatim from Nanit
Thread: "Nanit Camera Hacked"
From what I was reading it’s more likely that hackers get into your Nanit through your wifi. I would regularly change your wifi password and make it complicated.
Thread: "Nanit Camera Hacked"
This!! People do not understand that it has nothing to do with Nanit. Hackers access via your WiFi, not the actual Nanit device. Eufy offers great encrypted, non-cloud based, no subscription household cameras. My husband is big on cyber security and we wanted a doorbell camera for safety. This was the best one.
Thread: "Do not buy the Nanit baby monitor"
We like our Nanit. 🤷♀️ You actually can use it on hotel wifi if you link it through your laptop. I found instructions online for it.
Thread: "Please be careful with WiFi baby monitors"
I’m so sorry. We have both Nanit (WiFi) and Infant Optics (Bluetooth) monitors for my daughter. While I was watching on IO, I heard a man’s voice coming through my daughter’s Nanit. It genuinely scared the bejesus out of me. I contacted support and they assured me no one had hacked the device, but said verbatim: “Currently, we are aware of an audio issue affecting a very small number of devices that can occasionally play a distorted sound. We understand how alarming it might be for parents and caregivers to hear any altered audio on their Nanit devices and we are currently working on a solution.” Like, why would there EVER be a sound playing out of the device and into the room? Especially without my authority, and especially if it’s the voice of a creepy man? I eventually gave Nanit another go because I do like the analytics and being able to rewatch certain moments, but it took me weeks to plug it back in.
Thread: "Do not buy the Nanit baby monitor"
I’m not deaf deaf - but I do have a hearing aid in one ear and the nanit sending me notifications is a BLESSING.
Thread: "Nanit Camera Hacked"
Do you think someone maybe hacked your wifi? You said your account has two factor but hackers would be able to get onto your network via the wifi so change your password there and see what other devices you have connected to the wifi.
Thread: "Do not buy the Nanit baby monitor"
I love that nanit is deaf community friendly
Thread: "Do not buy the Nanit baby monitor"
We love ours and have loved it since our first baby was born. We got one for our second kid after trying to go with a cheaper WiFi monitor and ended up switching to Nanit. I don’t feel the need to always have the kids showing on my phone so it doesn’t impact my battery. Also, we have the Amazon show and you can link the monitor to that if you want continuous visibility or the ability to listen. When we’ve had babysitters, it’s nice to be able to pull up the kids on our phones while we’re out to check in. I could see how the ability to travel could be annoying. For my older kid, I accidentally broke the original stand and had to get one of the flex stands which I think would be better for travel since it’s small and gives full visibility of a room.
Thread: "Do not buy the Nanit baby monitor"
Possibly controversial opinion: don’t buy any baby monitor that requires being connected to WiFi. They always disconnect and can be hacked. The non WiFi ones have always been so reliable for us!
Thread: "Best Baby Monitor: What Do Parents Recommend?"
Do not let the wifi monitors get hacked comments scare you off. Almost all of those horror stories come from those old unsecured models people bought a decade ago. a lot of parents in this sub talk about that exact moment where video saves you unnecessary interventions when u know what the noise is about. Id suggest you get one which allows you floor stand like this [nanit style](https://dk5cnflyn7mcb.cloudfront.net/?q=GMKAO1052) ones instead of making drills. only downside is you’ll get app notifications a bit too enthusiastically at first until you dial them down but i mean thats the exact purpose.
Thread: "I've been tasked to find the best baby monitor. What are you all thinking?"
We went a bit lower tech and just stuck with a dedicated video monitor by Infant Optics. It's stand alone, doesn't rely on wifi, my internet connection, or my phone. The resolution could be better but it's good enough for us to keep an eye on baby. We decided that the potential for false breathing alarms would cause more anxiety for us than help us so we chose not to pay extra for those features. I have not heard first hand feedback on Nanit but it did sound like really cool tech. We wound up buying a second camera used to have one at the pack and play and one at the crib when we were back and forth between the two beds. At the end of the day I like the choice we made. Plus when we hand off the monitor it acts like a baton for which parent has responsibility for baby at night. Edit: typos
Thread: "Nanit Camera Hacked"
I refused to get a camera with Wi-Fi because of this! I don’t want anyone but myself or my husband being able to access it.
Thread: "Do not buy the Nanit baby monitor"
I use an old iPad instead of my phone..
Thread: "What baby monitoring/ cam system do you all use? "
Nanit, it’s not worth the absurd subscription fee. As a camera though it’s decent
Thread: "Do we really need a nice baby monitor like the Nanit or Owlet if we're room sharing for the first 6 months anyway?"
Owlet is bogus technology that has been linked with increased maternal post partum anxiety. I LOVE my Nanit monitor because I can check in when I’m at work and see my baby and spouse playing in the baby’s room and even talk to them! It’s lovely, but we haven’t invested in the breathing tracking because the technology doesn’t hold up in preventing SIDS. Basic safe sleep methods are your best bet to preventing SIDS, and cosleeping for the first 6 months is a fantastic place to start.
Thread: "Has anyone ever had their baby’s monitor hacked??"
People seem to do this because it’s easy and they can watch the results on video. Most of the security nerds I know who are parents use the Nanit monitor, but also they put some real effort into securing their home WiFi. If it’s just chilling the way it was installed it’s not good enough.
Thread: "Nanit Camera Hacked"
Even if they had LAN WiFi access, they’d still need to access the Nanit account in order to utilize application features like the speaker. And account compromise is way more likely than Hack Wifi/Hack into Nanit. All for being cautious, but Occam’s Razor applies here.
Thread: "Please be careful with WiFi baby monitors"
Same and same. My in-laws were like, "You guys are tech-savvy, you'll _love_ the nannit." I did about 10 minutes of research and told my husband, "Absolutely not." I recall reading a few years back that the least secure device you own in terms of data privacy is your car. I've gotten to the point where I simply don't have the time or energy to make sure my car, refrigerator, doorbell, and now baby monitor are safe. I'll pick a dumb solution almost every time.
Thread: "Do not buy the Nanit baby monitor"
I love my nanit. I think about how much I love it in a daily basis. Without it, it would be impossible to track my baby's sleep, his wake windows, how long it takes him to fall asleep when I put him in his crib. Without it, sleep training would have been sooooo much more difficult. We also use the flex stand when we are traveling.
Thread: "Nanit Camera Hacked"
just did this. Our WiFi password was pretty easy. We just had no idea.
Thread: "Do not buy the Nanit baby monitor"
I love mine - sorry it didn't work for you!
Thread: "Do not buy the Nanit baby monitor"
There is a travel “attachment” you can get to bring it with you. I’ve used it while traveling but not in a hotel, only a relatives house so I had no WiFi issues
Thread: "Man Talking To My Daughter Through Owlet Camera"
I don’t think that’s the issue actually. I have heard it’s that they can hack into accounts (especially ones where people’s email/passwords for other websites have been leaked and also work for owlet/nanit etc) and then have access to the cameras. Not sure, just what I’ve heard from IT/techy friends.
Thread: "Do not buy the Nanit baby monitor"
I love our nanit SO much and could not disagree more. The sleep analytics are outstanding I love knowing how long my son has been asleep for timing naps, dealing with sleep cycle issues, identifying sleep onset time etc. You can really setup your own wifi network when you travel with a $15 gadget from Amazon there are instructions easily google able.
Thread: "WiFi baby monitor hacking"
Having video and pics of your child on the internet with no control whatsoever on their destination (to put it mildly)
Thread: "Baby monitors"
This has actually happened with our nanit, yes. Super scary.
Thread: "Do not buy the Nanit baby monitor"
We put the nanit on our phone’s hot spot WiFi! Haven’t had issues with it
Thread: "Please be careful with WiFi baby monitors"
What brands though? This rules out the Nanit
Thread: "Nanit Camera Hacked"
I mean, this was more useful than the 80 smug "this is why I use a non WiFi monitor" comments. While accurate, not helpful
Thread: "WiFi baby monitor hacking"
My husband is a network engineer for a federal agency so I let him take the lead on choosing our baby monitor. We have a standard Nanit and run of the mill internet (Comcast/Xfinity). We have never had an issue with our camera being hacked. We have strong password and 2FA set up for both the camera and our home network. We’ve had the camera since Sept 2021. While our anecdote is ours, just as someone who has experienced a hack, we feel safe and comfortable with our choice.
Thread: "Not everyone can fork out 300 for a Owlet sock "
Absolutely. Accepting that you can not control everything is so important in parenthood. These tools will give you the illusion that you can, and will make it more difficult to trust your gut/intuition knowing the long run.
Thread: "Please be careful with WiFi baby monitors"
I never heard anything coming out of the nanit but suddenly around 9 months my baby started waking in the middle of the night, screaming. Then we went away for the weekend (did not bring the nanit) and she slept through. Then we got home and she started screaming again. I took the nanit down and she slept through the night again. To preserve my sanity, I tell myself it was the little red lights freaking her out, but I’ll never really know. We only use infant optics now.
Thread: "Do not buy a Nanit"
We love our Nanit. We think it was our best purchase for the nursery.
Thread: "Nanit Camera Hacked"
Yup. We use infant optics. Good old fashioned monitor/camera works just fine for us. This is so scary! Sorry this happened, OP! Hopefully Nanit responds and takes this seriously.

Echo this as a clinical psychologist working in perinatal health . For my really anxious patients it typically just promotes checking and hyper-vigilance, or acts as a safety net that makes it difficult for moms to let go of once their babies become toddlers or difficult to let their babies sleep without, if it isn’t available. And when it sends off false alarms it can be really distressing. Unfortunately for many of these patients, they are convinced it’s helping until I work with them to stop using it - it’s hard for them to see how it can act to feed into the anxiety. So OP, save your money and don’t feel badly about it! Just use safe sleep techniques and know that babies make all sorts of strange sounds in the night. Edit to add: we got a similar type sock when someone gifted us the Nannit camera. The sock stayed in the box unused - we’ll likely sell when we sell the camera once done using it. We don’t even check the camera all the time - we got a $30 audio only speaker and use this as our primary source of deciding whether we need to keep an eye on her with the camera. She’s one now and this system has worked great for us!
Thread: "WiFi baby monitor hacking"
Another risk of hacking: My friend had someone talking to her toddler at night through the wifi monitor. It took them days to figure out because the toddler could not express it properly and was just terrified to go to bed all of a sudden. They have no idea how long it has been going on and it was quite upsetting.
Thread: "Do not buy the Nanit baby monitor"
We have the a Nanit and love it. I love that you can play the monitor audio in the background on your phone; I’ll regularly watch Netflix or listen to a podcast during naptime and love not having to keep an eye on the monitor bc I can hear if my toddler makes noise. When we have a babysitter we just use an old iPad, which sometimes we’ll use around the house if we don’t want to use our phones. For travel, we just have a separate non-wifi monitor with a traditional screen monitor.
Thread: "Please be careful with WiFi baby monitors"
What? And they’re able to get into the nanits protocol and broadcast? They have nanits firmware in order to speak to your baby, this is utter nonsense.
Thread: "Do not buy the Nanit baby monitor"
Yeah I also really like our Nanit. Sounds like OP is having a really frustrating experience but ours has been great.
Thread: "Nanit Camera Hacked"
Not blaming you here, but I’d look into your own wifi/network settings. Way more likely someone has got access to your network vs the Nanit backend. If the latter was the case, the entire Nanit system would be compromised, and it would be a way bigger problem.
Thread: "Please be careful with WiFi baby monitors"
This sent a shiver down my spine
Thread: "Nanit Camera Hacked"
It’s not always size as much as building material. Our home is made of concrete and has a heavy security door between the bedrooms and living space. Signals don’t reach well
