Miku Pro

The Miku Pro is a smart baby monitor that tracks breathing and sleep patterns without requiring wearables. It features HD video, two-way audio, and temperature and humidity sensors.

Pros (+)

  • Breathing monitor provides peace of mind for anxious parents
  • Sleek design and high-quality build
  • Tracks sleep patterns effectively

Cons (−)

  • Subscription model limits access to previously included features
  • Connectivity issues reported by multiple parents
  • High price point for a monitor with reliability concerns

Why parents like it

The design and build quality of the Miku Pro are often praised, with some parents noting it helped alleviate their anxiety during sleep. The breathing monitor feature is highlighted as particularly beneficial for infants with respiratory issues.

Common complaints

A significant number of parents are upset about the transition to a subscription service that locks key features behind a paywall. Many also report issues with connectivity and reliability after the company’s bankruptcy.

Best for

Parents who prioritize advanced breathing monitoring without the need for wearables. However, be prepared for potential connectivity issues and ongoing subscription costs.

Bottom line

The Miku Pro offers useful features, but the subscription model and reliability issues have left many parents disappointed.

Thread: "Miku Camera - DO NOT BUY THIS SHIT"

It's worth noting what happened to them. It wasn't intentional or a planned scam. They made a fantastic product. Loved mine from the day we got it and for the first 18 months of my kids life it worked great. The Miku product was beautifully designed. Even the box it came in felt like something apple came up with. It even came with a cloth measuring tape and pencil so you could install it at the right height! These folks really tried. Then they fucked up so hard. They rolled out an update that bricked a huge number of devices. Now at this point they know they're screwed but they decided to try to make it right. They sent out new devices to all (?) of the impacted customers at their own cost but now they're deep in debt. They tried to find a buyer, someone who could pay off the debt and take ownership of the company. They didn't find one. Instead they went bankrupt. Now consider the danger here: the device needs active running servers in the cloud for it to function properly and the company doesn't even have the money to pay a developer to try to change that fact. So as part of the bankruptcy agreement they sold the ownership of that part of the product to the highest bidder- some shady company that says "okay you want those features, you gotta pay per month". Now they're universally reviled and it makes me so sad because they really did seem to care. Source: I read every email they sent to all customers throughout the process and watched the ship sink.

The whole reason you spent $400 was for the live breathing and enhanced safety health features. Any baby monitor has 'live montoring'...its a video camera. Thats its basic function. $20 cheap monitors can do that. You spent hundreds. Don't let them trick you. Don't settle. Demand better. Do not subscribe. Do not purchase any new monitors.

I really liked mine before the company accidentally bricked it. The breathing monitor was so nice when he had RSV. But now, with all of the paid for features, it is no better than a cheap-o video monitor. Definitely echo your sentiments!

Here is a draft objection letter you could submit: John Doe 123 Main St Anytown, NJ 99999 johndoe@email.com August 28, 2023 VIA EMAIL ONLY Morris S. Bauer, Esq. MSBauer@duanemorris.com Drew S. McGehrin, Esq. DSMcGehrin@duanemorris.com Re: In re Miku, Inc., Case No. 23-17005 (Bankr. D.N.J.) Objection to Implementation of Subscription Service Dear Mr. Bauer and Mr. McGehrin: I am a customer of Miku, Inc. ("Miku") and hereby object to Miku's proposed implementation of a subscription service as described in its motion filed on August 14, 2023. I purchased a Miku Pro baby monitor directly from Miku for $399 based on advertisements and representations that the monitor provided certain key features at no extra cost. These features, including HD video streaming, health analytics, and storage of video recordings, were highlighted by Miku as setting its product apart from competitors. Miku now seeks to revoke many of these features and charge me an additional monthly fee to maintain the functionality I already paid for. This fundamentally changes the nature of the product I purchased and breaches the reasonable expectations created by Miku's own marketing claims. It provides Miku an unfair opportunity to have the benefits of its advertising while retroactively altering the terms. Additionally, features like the on-device display of room temperature and the playing of lullabies are inherent to the Miku Pro device. They do not require an external server connection. Removing access to them absent a paid subscription serves no justifiable purpose other than seeking additional revenue. For these reasons, I respectfully ask the Court to deny approval of Miku's proposed subscription service implementation so I and other customers may continue using the full features of the product we already bought. Sincerely, John Doe Miku Customer

Not a miku user, but also kinda bored so I looked it up. I think it might be related to them recently locking all their features behind a subscription??? So if you originally bought the camera based on it doing X, y, and z thing for a onetime fee, then you are sore out of luck. Or maybe their camera just got hacked, who knows. Whatever it is, it's not showing up with a cursory Google, so op will need to say more.

I have actively been emailing them for literally months about how my camera does not work and how I want a refund. On top of that they “accidentally” sent all my personal information to another customer and claimed they mixed up the tickets. I have never had such an awful experience with a device. What can we even do about this?!

I personally think it is. I’ve had mine for over a year and it has given me more peace of mind than headaches. It was really great when our daughter was born and I was able to check in on our son from the hospital. I also love the breathing band especially since both my babies now have liked to sleep with their faces smashed into the crib mattress. It’s also connected my son with his grandma cause she can access his camera for babysitting but also just to see him.

Thread: "MIKU CAMERA - looking into a class action lawsuit"

For those that do not understand what is going on: The MIKU monitor is amongst the most expensive baby monitors on the market at $400, this is because it monitors breathing visually without the need for attachments, provides sleep analytics, has video playback to see the infant's activity, sounds, and lullabies. The company went bankrupt and got bought out. The new company decided to make every single feature beyond live video and sound to be only accessible by a $10/month subscription. Now, when I say every feature, I mean that you cannot even turn on microphone to talk to the infant, it is solely video and sound. This essentially changed the value of a $400 monitor into a $10 monitor, I literally bought a nanny cam on Amazon for $20 that has a handful more free features. Source: Me, a currently pissed off Miku owner that wants to sue the shit out of the company. tl/dr: Miku Camera cost $400 as an upfront cost for a ton of features. Company went bankrupt and bought out, new company made every single feature only accessible with a $10/month subscription. Screwing over everyone that paid $400 for a monitor they could've gotten a comparible for $20.

Isn't that illegal? When we all bought these cameras they advertised with the following description: HSA/FSA approved, no hidden subscription fees, room temperature and humidity sensors, night vision, two-way audio, no wearables required, no batteries required, quick and easy installation. custom sleep sounds and lullabies. To put it all behind a paywall now seems like we should get a refund or we should do a class action.

Yes this is it. The camera was $400+. I only purchased it for the breathing monitor. Now that is behind a paywall including watching playback of video. I didn't even use the sleep tracking but that's also behind a paywall. Its absolutely ridiculous they are getting away with this. Honestly the camera sucked from the start but I missed the return window at the time unfortunately. I used to be pick my baby up from the crib and put him back 20 minutes later and it would say there was no activity. I told the company and they said it only records certain events (that you can choose).

I got the miku but returned it because the wifi connection wasn’t good in our house and also the breathing assessment was as good as made up (sometimes would pick up a respiratory rate with no baby in the crib). Everybody who has a miku knows exactly what it's about. And you hit it square on the head. It is about them advertising a 300 dollar camera with free feature that other companies had behind a pay wall. Now they put those features behind a pay wall. There should be consumer protections for grandfathering current customers in and creating the pay wall for new customers.

We will grudgingly pay for the paywalled services for about 6 months once our second gets here because it’s cheaper than buying a new video monitor, but we wouldn’t buy it new now. We’re just getting an audio monitor for the toddler and switching the camera over to the baby.   I will say they sent us a replacement when it died last month with very little hassle, but I’m pretty sure it died because they pushed out a bad firmware update so that’s break-even at best.  Edit to add: it currently acts as a camera without the subscription. Live breathing tracking, sleep timers, automatic video clips of certain things, and keeping track of the 30ish day history of all these things came with the monitor originally but are behind a paywall as of about a year ago (give or take).

There should be consumer protection for this sort of thing. I would happily join a class action. Existing Miku owners should have been grandfathered in when this change occurred. You can’t sell something saying that the features are included with the initial purchase price then turn around and start charging for those features. It’s bait and switch. Completely agree with all of this AND want to add that it just sucks for travel, with no Bluetooth connectivity backup and the inability to connect to anything but a perfect, private wifi signal. I begrudgingly pay for the premium features now since my toddler had a respiratory infection a little while ago and my anxiety got the better of me, but I'm just so disappointed by how disappointing this product has turned out to be, which we truly loved at first!
