Merlin sleep suit

The Merlin Sleep Suit is a weighted sleep garment designed to help babies sleep better by suppressing the startle reflex. It is suitable for babies who are not yet rolling over and typically recommended for those weighing at least 12 pounds.

Pros (+)

  • Helps babies sleep longer and more soundly
  • Weighted design calms startle reflex
  • Effective for babies not yet rolling

Cons (−)

  • Difficult transition once baby starts rolling
  • Safety concerns for early rollers
  • Requires another sleep solution afterward

Why parents like it

Many parents report significant improvements in their baby's sleep patterns after using the Merlin sleep suit. Its design helps to calm babies and can be a great tool for transitioning from swaddling.

Common complaints

Transitioning out of the Merlin sleep suit can be difficult, with some parents noting it requires another adjustment period. Additionally, a few parents raise safety concerns regarding its use for babies who start rolling early.

Best for

Parents looking for a sleep solution for babies who are not yet rolling. The tradeoff is that transitioning out of the suit can be a difficult process.

Bottom line

The Merlin sleep suit is effective for improving sleep in non-rolling babies, but parents should be prepared for a challenging transition later on.

Depending on his weight you can try the Merlin sleep suit!

Love the MSS; my baby immediately started sleeping through the night in one. So much for the Snoo investment 🫠

Count me as one of the people who swears by the Merlin sleep suit. That worked extremely well for us when we were at a similar point. You're nervous that it's unsafe if your LO manages to roll over in it?

This is pretty specific to our situation so it might not be of any help but we transitioned to the zipadee zip the day we started sleep training at 4 months so it was a two birds one stone kind of deal. In retrospect I wish we had just transitioned to a normal sleep sack because the zipadee zip/Merlin just becomes another thing to transition out of. Prior to sleep training we were trying one arm out of the swaddle and it was such a struggle because baby loved to rub his face which would wake him up. Sometimes we’d give up and stick both arms back in. Good luck.

The zipadee zip worked better for us than the Merlin (even though the Merlin was actually pretty decent). This is gonna sound crazy, but (if you use pacis) try giving your LO pacis to hold. We thought ours still had a Moro reflex, but instead we found out she just wanted to hold something.

Can’t recommend Merlin sleep suit enough to anyone who will listen if LO is at least 12 pounds and isn’t rolling! Started with halo then love to dream, but neither really worked until the Merlin suit! 🙌🏼

The Merlin suit is actually not weighted. It’s just three layers of fabric and kind of stuff, but it’s not weighted.

Bought both the zippadee zip and Merlin. We’re going through it now. We decided to abandoned the Merlin because we’d just have to transition again. This question gets asked a lot on this sub, myself included. Most people recommend the zippadee zip or just cold turkey in a sleep sack. We’re on day 5 and it might be getting better? I’m seriously knocking on wood right now. She was a 7pm-7am with maybe a couple wakeups, including one to eat while swaddled. Now she is up every hour or so. Best of luck!

Baby started breaking out of his swaddle then waking hourly at 8 weeks. We tried a Merlin and got two blissful nights of 8hrs sleep straight but that was it. So we switched to the woolino and he’s been sleeping in that since (not well, but it’s not the woolino’s fault lol)

We tried the halo swaddle where you can have the arms in or out, we did one arm out for a bit to slowly transition until LO started to roll. The Merlin sleep suit is amazing, but it’s a pain to transition out of!!! I’d say try the halo swaddle or just stick it out with the sleep sack for a few more days and see if it gets better. Also tried the zipadee-zip which worked well since arms are still enclosed!

Co-sign the Merlin! Our little guy was an escape artist too. It took 2 days to transition and then he had his first sleep through the night on the 3rd day! It could’ve been a coincidence but I think it was the magic sleep suit.

We’re struggling with the same thing with our 3 month old. we are rotating between the Ollie one arm out during naps and Merlin at night and we do the inverse the following day.. we are on week 2.. Naps have been good, nighttime 8sleeps are better with the Ollie.. good luck!

Yes! +1 for this. We used it for 2 weeks for naptimes while trying to get out of swaddling, and now she's sleeping in a sleepsack no problem! Plus, it's freakin adorable.

Merlin sleep suits are weighted and designed to restrict rolling/movement and are not safe for sleep. Especially since you said he is trying to roll over in it - it specially says on the Merlin website that the suit is not designed for tummy sleep and is an immediate suffocation risk. I wouldn’t risk it personally :( CLSC Safe Sleep Recommendations https://www.cpsc.gov/SafeSleep?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR2tK1U1jts1OnhM9zSvyfMCSoXY-43zhvOWcNA9-JhZPWDCAPPdK1jYXOg_aem_dBvG5Yb3UEYp6hoiqTWBFA Article specifically about the questionable safety of the Merlin suit https://www.adensmom.com/merlin-sleepsuit-safety/ (ETA sources)

You didn’t ask me but 🙂 - It just adds some resistance with slightly tight/stiff sleeves, it doesn’t hold them down. It may not be enough for your baby but for us it was a great middle ground between the love to dream and a regular sleeveless sack. Sometimes they just need time to adjust as well. If he’s not rolling at all then Merlin is pretty safe since even babies that are great rollers usually take a while to be able to roll in it.

I was originally nervous because I thought it was weighted but someone else on here says it isn't. I did read reviews & alot of people said it's a SIDS risk for being too hot.

We tried Merlin, zippadee, two different expensive weighted ones and nothing worked. We eventually sleep trained at 6 months and now he just sleeps in his onesie with no sack. This is very different from our first who did great with sleep sacks.

Thread: "Favorite lightweight swaddles/sleep sacks?"

I hated the halo ones. There is too much fabric on them. We used a SNOO but also had their happiest baby sweet pea Velcro swaddles for naps in the crib. They're lightweight and have venting at the top and bottom. Really nice quality. My daughter was born this time last year and it was hot as a mother up here in Massachusetts so I can only imagine what Florida is like since it is even more humid there than it is here. We just used a regular onesie and she was fine. Even when she was 3m we used a Merlin in the SNOO and just left her in a diaper cos it was still hot here and never had any issues. They can't really regulate body temp that young so just check their chest and back of their neck to see if they are warm.

Thread: "How do people transition their babies out of a swaddle?"

we had this same problem, our daughter loved being swaddled too much. Transitioning out was rough until we got the Merlin's sleep suit, she loved that thing. I think the puffiness of it helped her still feel secure enough to sleep. Once she outgrew that we have had her in this one from amazon ever since (she's 19 months now): [https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VSLPQ4G/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_search\_asin\_title?ie=UTF8&th=1](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VSLPQ4G/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1)

Thread: "Tell me your experience with transition out of swaddle"

I have 3 kiddos so I’ve tried almost every option. With my first I was also doing a double swaddle because he kept busting out but then would get furious. I was so nervous about messing up his sleep I bought a Merlin. It worked of course but it wound up just being one more thing I had to wean from. With my second I did one arm out for a few days, then switched to the other side with one arm out for a few days then both. There were of course some disruptions, but nothing major. With my third I did a zipadee because she was 2m premature and by the time she was hitting 3/4m actual she still had a pretty strong startle reflex, but it was time to transition. All of that is to say it kind of depends on the kid. I’d suggest trying the arm out process because it costs you $0. It may be a little early unless your kiddo is showing signs of rolling. I usually began this process around 12ish weeks.

That sounds like my little 10 week old boy. A friend of ours recommended Merlin’s magic suit (I think it’s called) and it’s been great. It looks like a snow suit. It does get a little warm so we don’t put any clothes on him if we’re using it but he sleeps great in it.

Thread: "When and how did you transition from swaddling?"

Our son slept in a snoo and started breaking his arms free around 2.5/3 months. We did a very slow transition because he was sleeping through the night and I didn’t want to rock the boat. But we used the Merlin sleep sack with the snoo arm Velcro band around his waste while we were also using the weaning mode on the snoo. We started with him wearing the Merlin sleep suit during naps only and then after a week or two, we had him wearing the Merlin suit for all sleep (day and night). And then we had him in the Merlin suit until he was 4 months old and then we did the same transition into a sleep sack. Started with naps and then transitioned to night sleep. Then 2 weeks later, we transitioned our son to a pack n play since we wanted to room share until 6 months. I would say it was a pretty smooth for us.

This is what I was going to recommend. I'm a FTM so don't have any other experience but the Halo transition sack made this a non-existent problem for us. Baby boy is also an eye rubber and paci swatter. Haven't tried anything else.

We used the Merlin to transition and it worked well. But it was truly just a transition, we maybe only used it for a few weeks at most. At our 4-month checkup, our pediatrician said to stop using it because restricting movement isn't good for development.
