This is crazy and so scary! Infant optics is a great Bluetooth camera if anyone needs a good recommendation- we’ve been using it for about 8 months now and it hasn’t let us down

My infant optics baby monitor works with a rock solid connection from 100+ feet away. It’s secure from the internet. We have used it for 5000 hours without a single hiccup and I am confident it will go for a lot more. It has a devoted video display, but more importantly it has a visual indicator to let us know the baby is crying allowing us to keep the volume low (we don’t need to watch our baby/toddler sleep!) Do I wish it were cheaper? Sure. But I love the thing and it has consistently served every need we’ve had.

We awoke to a man’s voice going “goo goo gahh gahh baby” at 4AM through our Nanit. The most unsettling feeling I’ve ever experienced. We received the same message verbatim from Nanit

Thread: "Please be careful with WiFi baby monitors"

I’m so sorry. We have both Nanit (WiFi) and Infant Optics (Bluetooth) monitors for my daughter. While I was watching on IO, I heard a man’s voice coming through my daughter’s Nanit. It genuinely scared the bejesus out of me. I contacted support and they assured me no one had hacked the device, but said verbatim: “Currently, we are aware of an audio issue affecting a very small number of devices that can occasionally play a distorted sound. We understand how alarming it might be for parents and caregivers to hear any altered audio on their Nanit devices and we are currently working on a solution.” Like, why would there EVER be a sound playing out of the device and into the room? Especially without my authority, and especially if it’s the voice of a creepy man? I eventually gave Nanit another go because I do like the analytics and being able to rewatch certain moments, but it took me weeks to plug it back in.

I've had friends who had it happen to them. It's why we got a non wifi monitor. Technically anything hooked up to wifi can be hacked, even your phone. Baby monitors seem to be easier to hack. Turn off the monitors when not in use. Never point them in places that give a layout or show too much of your house. Be careful of what you say around them when they are on.

I used an Wyze camera before my current non-wifi one, and I had the same thing happen to me. I was nursing LO at the time so my boobs were out, in the dark, and I heard the sound of the camera moving. I looked at it and watched as it aimed at me. I texted my husband to stop being so creepy and he had no idea what I was talking about. The camera came down right away and returned. 2 weeks later I got a notification on my phone from the camera, I opened it, and it was a random person setting up their new (SAME) camera. Exit: I said Infant Optics but the brand was actually Wyze

Don't use a WiFi/internet-connected monitor. 1. When your WiFi goes down, so does your baby monitor. You don't want this to happen in the middle of the night when you're sleeping. 2. Security concerns as noted in this post. You want a baby monitor that runs on a radio antenna like the Infant Optics DXR-8. It's got a shit screen and image quality but the connection is rock solid and that's what matters most.

We use the Infant Optics DXR-8, it’s been going strong for 4+ years and we plan to also use it for our second that’s due in September. It’s a no bullshit monitor that has good sound, an LED audio meter on the side, you can turn the video off and just use audio, and the battery life is great. If we got a different monitor we would just get the updated dxr-8 pro (or whatever it’s called).

We went a bit lower tech and just stuck with a dedicated video monitor by Infant Optics. It's stand alone, doesn't rely on wifi, my internet connection, or my phone. The resolution could be better but it's good enough for us to keep an eye on baby. We decided that the potential for false breathing alarms would cause more anxiety for us than help us so we chose not to pay extra for those features. I have not heard first hand feedback on Nanit but it did sound like really cool tech. We wound up buying a second camera used to have one at the pack and play and one at the crib when we were back and forth between the two beds. At the end of the day I like the choice we made. Plus when we hand off the monitor it acts like a baton for which parent has responsibility for baby at night. Edit: typos

Thread: "Pros vs cons of wifi baby monitor?"

I will say we have a non WiFi monitor (infant optics) and we love it. I feel so much safer knowing they (rarely) get hacked into. One time we also lost internet for 2 days due to some storms, and I was so grateful we had a non WiFi one or we literally wouldn’t have been able to use a baby monitor. It has a decently far range, I’ve used it with no problem all the way in the back of our backyard which is huge. I also like that when I’m out and my husband is with the baby, I’m not tempted to check the baby monitor because I literally can’t lol. It helps you disconnect and I enjoy that. I do understand wanting access with a nanny or babysitter though, so I don’t have any advice for that. If that’s a huge deciding factor I say go for the WiFi one, because there’s no work around with a non WiFi monitor unless you got a ring or nest camera for the house for times that you’re away.

Encrypted, no Internet connect monitors like Infant Optics is what you want. The goal is to reduce the probability of eavedropping. Reducing how far signals broadcast helps with this strategy.

I think it usually just means its non networked, like it just uses radio signals similar to a walky talky or something and you have a dedicated receiver for the audio and/or video, rather than using an app on your phone or something. Mine is like this (infant optics). I find it a bit easier because if somebody is babysitting I can just hand them the receiver rather than asking them to install an app or something. It's also nice because the person holding the receiver knows they're in charge of the baby.

I never heard anything coming out of the nanit but suddenly around 9 months my baby started waking in the middle of the night, screaming. Then we went away for the weekend (did not bring the nanit) and she slept through. Then we got home and she started screaming again. I took the nanit down and she slept through the night again. To preserve my sanity, I tell myself it was the little red lights freaking her out, but I’ll never really know. We only use infant optics now.

Thread: "WiFi baby monitor hacking"

My husband is an IT professional for an airline. We use a non-wifi baby monitor. It basically uses radio frequencies; like old fashioned monitors but it has a signal that stretches through our house, down to the basement, and even outside the house and slightly outside the house. We can sit on our back porch and have a signal still if we want to watch the sunset. Not a wonderful signal out there but works. We avoided wifi-reliant monitoring systems because we had several close friends tell us stories of people talking to their kids on the monitors or accidentally picking up the neighbors talking to their kids on their monitor which is equally creepy. Anyway, someone would have to be in our house to hack or monitor system. It doesn't send out a strong enough signal for someone to be nextdoor and find the random frequency and hack it. Something I wish it did was freq hop. But whatever. It's pretty secure. Infant Optics makes the one we use and it's nice cause we can add additional monitors and it seems to work. So two babies in different rooms can be monitored.

100% this. We did the same with a BT monitor. No privacy concerns and we use the monitor as a baton too. Could probably get away with just using sound but it's useful being able to check if they've rolled themselves or got in an awkward position. Some of our NCT group got the pads you put under their mattress to check breathing but they caused more stress than they solved problems.

We have the infant optics video monitor and I love it. No wifi, so no risk of hacking. An audio only monitor would work okay, but it helps me a lot to be able to see baby. He often starts thrashing before he really wakes up so we know when he’s rousing from a nap. Babies can be loud sleepers. If he’s making noise I can look to see if he’s awake and needs something, awake but fine and chilling, or still asleep. Also, it’s hard to explain how much peace of mind I get just from being able to look at the monitor and know he’s still there and okay. I know that sounds bizzare, but sometimes I just watch him sleep on the monitor because it makes me happy. Parenting is weird.

Thread: "First time dad, looking to get the first baby monitor. Any tips or warning I should know beforehand?"

Would really recommend against getting one that works via phone (and therefore internet). Questionable safety against hacking -- but most importantly, you will need to worry about wifi connections etc. every time you set it up. If you plan on traveling with the kid at all, that's a huge pain (and will come up exactly at bedtime when you \*really\* don't want to be messing with wifi settings after a long drive/flight). We have a cheap-ish Infant Optics system. It's not wifi, and has been rock-solid over many years of traveling. It just works, first time, every time. Plug it in, you're done. And that's \*so\* important. Also: make sure the system warns you loudly if there's a problem (battery, out of range, etc.). You really don't want a silent failure, where your kid is calling for you and you not hearing. Even if it's exceedingly rare, you will feel like shit the first time it happens. Infant Optics has a loud alarm on any problem, we've never had a silent failure (we had a previous one where it did freeze up without telling us, kid was fine but we felt terrible).
