The Halo swaddles are the best of both worlds they zip up like a sleep sack and then have Velcro flaps that cover their arms to “swaddle” them. And then when they start to roll over (or if they just had being swaddled like my son) you can warp the Velcro around their belly and keep their arms out.
Bonus points for the fleece ones in the winter.
Based on our limited 1-child experience: Velcro swaddle: Halo Arms up: Love to Dream Combo (velcro, arms up, transition): Nested Bean Zen One (more bang for buck)

The Halo ones worked well for us. You only need a couple, really, unless your baby is super spitty, but it's most convenient to have 3-5. I'd start with a couple and see if your baby likes it before buying more. I never got very good at wrapping a muslin swaddle but we were gifted a Miracle Blanket swaddle that I found quite foolproof!

I also thought it was a pretty uncontroversial opinion that babies like being swaddled until I saw people yelling about it online! As far as I understand it, it can help them feel calmer and keep them from startling and waking themselves up by flailing their arms. We plan to try it. We have some blankets (hoping my mom can show me how to make a nice tight burrito since she’s a nurse) and some Halo swaddles, because that’s the brand my SIL swears by.

I was SO scared to transition LO out of the swaddle too. He started rolling so we didn’t have much choice and just had to bite the bullet and do it. It was a couple rough nights but honestly once you rip that bandaid off you’re going to be so happy that it’s behind you! We didn’t do anything groundbreaking but I’ll share what tips we used! We had been using the Ollie and the halo interchangeably. We did one arm out for a few nights (maybe a week?), once he got used to that we tried two arms out for a while, then both arms out with the swaddle still snug around his torso. Finally we transitioned to a sleep sack. We chose the nested bean zen sack because it seemed to offer some of the comforts of a swaddle with the safety of a sleep sack for a rolling baby. This is the tip that was most helpful to me: start at nighttime, not nap time. The drive to sleep is higher at night! Just stay consistent and you’ll cruise through this transition! Good luck ☺️

We used the Halo swaddles and sleep sacks exclusively for my baby up until like a month ago (she is 12mo). For the swaddles, you need to make sure that you Velcro it relatively low on their torso and make it super tight! If it is up over their face, you probably didn’t do it tight enough. This is where we are. Ours is five days old and doesn't mind swaddling, but will fight like a bear to have his arms out, so we just gave up and leave his them out (also a Halo sleepsack swaddle).

Been using the Halo sleep swaddles. Tried swaddling with blankets but my LO would just get out of them constantly. It did seem like she didn’t like to have her arms down but she sleeps way better when they are down and she’s in a tight little straight jacket 😂 Once she rolls we can leave her arms out of the Velcro.

We had a halo swaddle to use when we came home from the hospital and he tolerated it for a few days and then decided he didn’t like it. Then we used the hospital blanket for a few days and then he was over that one! We ended up getting a fleece newborn Halo sleep sack and used that until he grew out of it. He slept with his arms up like a football goal post 😂 made it much easier that we didn’t have to transition him out of a swaddle! Halo and Burt’s bees are my faves.

I second the no fleece suggestion. Our daughter also overheated in them. The cotton halo swaddles worked great for both of my babies though. They grew out of them pretty quickly (around 2 months), but by then their startle reflex was mostly gone, so we just switched them to the Burt's bees beekeeper sleep sack, which worked great.

You are not alone! Haha we liked the Merlin because does help with the startle but we only got a few weeks use out of it before she starting showing signs of rolling and that’s when you are supposed to stop using it but during the time she slept well in it! I liked to use that halo one after it since it has arms like the Merlin did but they are able to move around freely in the halo. We are still using it at 5 months!

The halo sleep sack swaddle is the only one my LO hasn’t wriggled out of. Pricey but I hope they fit him for a while and we’ll use with arms out as well.

I just used the hospital blankets until she grew out of swaddles at 3 months. I had a Halo, some Velcro one, etc. and none was better than a simple hospital blanket.
Thread: "Am I in the minority when I say Halo sleep sacks are terrible?"
Our hospital gave us a halo swaddle and I hated it. I was so stressed out in the hospital because no matter who put my baby in it, it always ended up covering her mouth/getting close to her nose. It gave me so much anxiety in the hospital I didn’t sleep at all and couldn’t relax until my husband went home and got a different one for me.

We loved the Ollie too. x3 kids Halo swaddles weren't snug enough for my kids to feel secure. They would wiggle and break their arms out/undo the swaddle in the middle of the night.

I agree. It's a little pricier than other swaddles but I think it's worth it. I tried different brands and types of swaddles, like Love to Dream, SwaddleMe pod, Aden and Anais,.etc, and found Halo to work the best with my newborn.

Great suggestions! Also Halo ones would ride up and cover my baby’s mouth and even nose so I didn’t feel like they were safe.
