Blankets aren’t safe because your baby can pull it over their heads and become trapped. Sleep sacks are impossible to pull over your head (unless you are using the wrong size and the baby could potentially ‘slide’ into it during sleep). The only sleep sacks I might avoid are weighted sleep sacks since I heard they might cause SIDS?

YES! I used them from when my daughter was born. Regular swaddles were a pain in the ass and she would get out of them anyways. Now at 13 months old she still used a Halo Sleep Sack (but not the swaddle kind, just the blanket). She always kicks off regular blankets so this way I can be sure she stays warm all night.

Ours hated it in the beginning (weeks 1-2) because he wanted to run his face with his hands, so we switched to the Ollie swaddle and put hands near face. After a month(ish) we tried the Love to Dream again because the Ollie was such a hassle for MOTN feedings and he actually loved it - we had also introduced the pacifier by then so he was wasn't trying to suck his hands, which could have helped. A month after that, he seemed super frustrated trying to move his legs while sleeping so I tried out the Halo Sleepsack (someone had gifted us one, so I already had it), and he started sleeping soooo good! Basically, I think you just have to try out different swaddles to see what baby likes, and their preferences may change!

The fabric is at the bottom and there's no way to shift that up to her face...unless she's doing some type of crazy inverted headstand yoga poses in her sleep. The reason sleep sacks are a go-to for safe sleep is because they are essentially wearable blankets that stay completely put due to the fitting around the arms and head. Just make sure the size is right and she can't wiggle out of the arm or head holes -- those should fit securely. If so, no worries at all.

Yes she is able to move her hands up to her face but I found we had the same issue with our normal halo sleep sack and she wakes herself up less doing it now with the zipadee. The zipadee also stifles the moro reflex a bit as well so it's a good transitional swaddle, plus safe for rolling and such. I know a lot of people keep their kids in the zipadee for well over a year just because their kids love them.

We had a halo swaddle to use when we came home from the hospital and he tolerated it for a few days and then decided he didn’t like it. Then we used the hospital blanket for a few days and then he was over that one! We ended up getting a fleece newborn Halo sleep sack and used that until he grew out of it. He slept with his arms up like a football goal post 😂 made it much easier that we didn’t have to transition him out of a swaddle! Halo and Burt’s bees are my faves.

We had the same scare with a blanket so we did the Love to Dream swaddle which is like a fitted sleep sack with arms in. She loves to have her arms by her face and it was easy with the zipper. I was going to say this, too. The newborn-3 size swaddle is definitely too short for any 3 month old I’ve met, and ours grew out of it at 6 weeks. Unfortunately, the next size up has too much fabric around the neck area for my liking. For the time being, I’ve been using muslin blankets and SwaddleMes in size 3-6 mo. I’m looking forward to when we can use the halo sleep sacks more, though, because they are great

I love our Ollie swaddles so much. We also got a few Halo sleep sacks in case baby hated the Ollies, and we've never used the Halo's at all. The Ollies are easy, quick, foolproof and my guy tolerates them without busting out of them most of the time! I highly recommend them. I will say, ours were purchased off of our registry so we didn't have to pay the $99 for them, but if someone didn't buy them for us I'd have bought them anyway and not regretted it.

I loved halo sleep sacks until I bought a brand new one that gave my baby a rash. We had two used ones before that but they were getting too small. I switched to swaddle me swaddles, they're great, but I don't recommend the ones with the zipper at the bottom, it turned out to be useless in terms of changing his diaper easily. He also grew out of those pretty quickly. Now, the nested bean swaddle, ✨magical✨. This thing is enormous compared to the swaddle me swaddle, and the weighted parts of it are great because my baby started only settling after night feeds if I had my hand on his chest. I did get good at using swaddle blankets (finally!) but I only use those during the day if I'm having trouble getting him down for a nap.

Halo is great because they are fool proof but annoying because at that price point they should really have a 2 way zipper to make changing diapers easier. Muslin wraps are great once you learn how to do it (you learn quick) this gave the snuggest fit. Best for newborn first few weeks. Get a variety of sizes. I wasn’t a fan of the Velcro wraps (ex. Aden and anise) because my babe would get her arms under the fabric wrap and lift it up covering her face. We really loved the sleepea type swaddle sack because my babe loved to sleep with her arms up. Also all mine have 2 way zippers. So I guess yet depends on your baby!

So my husband and I had different preferences, he liked the Velcro ones and I liked the flat ones. We both agreed that the Halo sleep sack was the best one (combo of zipper and Velcro) but only the fleece one, as the cotton ones came undone easier. After that, his favorite brand was called SwaddleMe by Ingenuity which were cheap on Amazon and he could always get to work for her. I preferred the blanket style ones from copper pearl because they're buttery soft and stretchy so I could get a right swaddle that lasted through the night until she was ready to transition to a sleep sack. Bonus on the copper pearl ones is that they're multipurpose, so they work as blankets, stroller covers, and she loves playing with them now that she's a bit older (9 months).

My baby is 5 weeks and pretty much since we’ve been home he just prefers his arms out. We have him in long sleeve pajamas and then a sleep sack, and they also make long sleeve sleep sacks. He sleeps better the majority of the time like that and the startle reflex hasn’t impacted our sleep. I’d give it a try having her just sleep with her arms out!! We realized this after realizing he slept better during the day when he wasn’t swaddled at all, just in his long sleeved footed pjs. With absolutely no evidence I feel like then having some movement is better for overall muscle/movement development. I get the “womb like” sensation but they aren’t in the womb anymore, and if they are having trouble sleeping in the swaddle why push it. ETA we have the halo too (baby is also in it now!) before you buy sleep sacks you can test the theory by fastening the velcros below her arms.

I’m glad your LO is okay! You’re amazing and awesome for getting that intuition to check 😀 It’s been a journey going through swaddles and we’re only at 5 weeks. In the hospital for an extended stay, the nurses were great with using the standard cloth swaddles. Us not so much. So we quickly switched to Velcro swaddles. Like everyone else our LO loves to Houdini his arms out of any swaddle. I now have to really tightly wrap him up in there. I do worry it could be too tight but it does the job of keeping his arms inside and he sleeps like, well, a baby so it’s gotta be OK. Just last week we did switch to the Halo sleep sack. Still swaddle his arms on his sides, but it’s nice to know we can eventually start using this one with his wacky wild swinging arms out and about. He’s got plenty of leg room to grow too. We’re only 5 weeks in but I do wonder if some other parents just don’t swaddle tight enough. Their arms shouldn’t be able to escape if it’s tight enough. I very well could be proven wrong as our little dude starts getting stronger, but I don’t see him being strong enough to power through a Velcro hold anytime soon.

Our bedroom tends to be anywhere from 70- probably 75. It gets so hot in here, So I always get worried we will heat our little one (1 month old) up too much. Though we do run the ceiling fan on low so the air doesn’t become stagnant. We sleep her in a footed pajama or long sleeved onesie, pants, and socks, and then a Halo sleep sack on top that has no arms. She likes that it swaddles her, she sleeps better that way. During the day when she naps in our room though, same temperature or lower and she sleeps in just footed pajamas or a onesie and pants just fine. Typically if your baby is uncomfortable with their conditions, they will cry or fuss. I guess this is a problematic indicator if your baby tends to cry frequently, though. I am sure you are doing just fine. I have read that the best indicator for a baby’s temperature is feeling their belly, and that it should feel warm but not hot. If you’re ever worried, just take a temperature on her. I have done that twice now with my little babe and all has been fine both times. Try to relax knowing you’re doing a fine job dressing your baby for bedtime and try to get some shuteye! 🙂

Swaddle until they start rolling (not the newborn curl but like actually rolling, usually between 3-5 months) and transition to sleep sack. The Halo sleep sacks are good for transitioning as you can do one arm at a time and then use the arm wraps under the armpits to make it a traditional sleep sack when they outgrow the swaddle. Be aware that sleep sacks come in different TOG for different temperatures. And also choose appropriate lengths for their height.
