Bugaboo Butterfly
The Bugaboo Butterfly is a compact travel stroller designed for easy transport and storage, featuring a one-second fold and a lightweight frame. It is suitable for children from 6 months and up, with a maximum weight capacity of 50 pounds.
Pros (+)
- Compact fold fits in overhead bins
- Easy to maneuver and carry
- Lightweight design for travel
Cons (−)
- No lay-flat recline for newborns
- Customer service issues reported
- Durability concerns from some parents
Why parents like it
The compact fold makes it airline-friendly, fitting easily in overhead bins. Parents appreciate the smooth maneuverability and the ability to carry it over the shoulder.
Common complaints
Several parents highlight the absence of a lay-flat recline, making it unsuitable for newborns. Others report frustrations with Bugaboo's customer service and the stroller's overall durability.
Parents who prioritize a lightweight, compact stroller for travel and city use. However, be prepared for potential customer service challenges and the absence of newborn-friendly features.
The Bugaboo Butterfly is great for parents who travel frequently, but the lack of a lay-flat option and customer service issues may be deal-breakers for some.

A tad young now by 5 months old it will be perfect. Have a great time.
Thread: "Parents, don't gate check your infant stroller if you care about it"
Unfortunately this isn’t a United issue but an all airlines issue. I second the recommendations above…cheap stroller for travel and keep the expensive ones at home.
Thread: "Best compact travel stroller for flights"
Butterfly 2 is most upright, best push, priciest stroller and accessories, faux-leather handle, fold is polarizing, canopy sticks out when folded. Fits tallest kids, has leg stirrup bar, stands on its own. Compact but not the smallest fold. 16 lb weight. ~15 lb basket capacity. 2 year warranty, 4 if you register it on their website. Minu V3 has full-grain leather, best materials per dollar, most premium feel, folds bigger than Butterfly, shorter leg room, no rear storage pocket. Least upright when upright, deeper recline than Butterfly, firmer suspension. May not fit overhead consistently. 16.7 lb weight. 20 lb basket capacity. 3 year warranty, 4 if you buy their travel bag. Joolz Aer2 has the best and easiest fold, lightest weight, most travel-friendly, smooth suspension for its size. Good upright seating, full lay down recline, shortest leg dimension of all, smaller basket, some complaints about the zipper for the recline. ~14 lb weight. ~17 lb basket capacity. 10 yr warranty. None is perfect. All are good with their cons. I went with the butterfly as I liked the leg space/tall kid capacity for longevity. If portability is your thing, the joolz. If quality/$$$, Minu.
Thread: "Is Joolz stroller good for nyc?"
The Joolz Aer is a great NYC option! I personally have the Bugaboo Butterfly, which I've heard is quite comparable to the Aer. I also have a much larger stroller but I find myself reaching for the travel stroller (Bugaboo Butterfly, in your case the Aer) far more often. I believe it's actually the smartest move to go with a travel stroller if you live in NYC. Sometime elevators don't work at the subway and you need a quick easy fold, with a one handed carry -- boom, Aer checks that box. Sometimes you need to jump in a cab and again have an easy fold -- boom, Aer. Going out to dinner or walking into a shop you want something compact that can fold down easily if need be; again the Joolz Aer has you covered here. And yes, to answer your question the wheels can handle the city for sure. The question you may run into is if you also want something bigger for grocery runs, park picnics, etc where you just need more cargo space. Many NYC parents (myself included) ultimately realize they need two strollers. But if I had to pick one, I'd go with the travel stroller. By the way, I work at GoodBuy Gear and I'm writing from this account. Check out our website if you want an open box Joolz Aer (or Butterfly) at a great deal. And holler with any other questions!
Thread: "Bugaboo Butterfly 2"
Don’t quote me on this and I hope I don’t get downvoted but apparently it’s only some overseas models that allow the butterfly 2 to be fully flat. There’s some kind of restriction on travel stroller recline angles here (which I don’t understand since some models in Aus do recline completely). I’d definitely recommend something else- my son was 5 months when we used the butterfly 1 and he hated it and wasn’t comfortable at that age.
Thread: "Best Travel Stroller?"
We love our Joolz Aer+. It's very similar to the butterfly. Both are discounted on goodbuygear.
Thread: "Best compact travel stroller for flights"
The top three are probably Bugaboo Butterfly, Joolz Aer, and Uppababy Minu. I would recommend that you go to Nordstrom and try them out if possible, as it’s mostly personal preference between the three.
Thread: "Bugaboo Butterfly 2"
Yeah I saw the new butterfly was “newborn” ready but wasn’t impressed with the recline and not convinced it’s ok for newborns. Certainly not for long sleeps. I don’t know why the Australian version (Joolz Aer 2 as well) don’t do the full recline like overseas versions. It’s frustrating as different websites say it is or isn’t safe from newborn (some say if you attach a capsule to it then it’s better for newborn) It will be perfectly fine for 5 month old though when you travel

We love our ergobaby metro! Edit: some considerations that will help you narrow down options - what's your budget? The bugaboo butterfly, uppababy minu, joolz aer, stokke yoyo etc are highly rated compact strollers but are the most expensive. The ergobaby metro is a mid range priced stroller. There are also very affordable options too. Are there specific features you care about? For example, do you want it to be able to fully recline flat for naps or for younger babies, or a canopy with good coverage, or a good size basket? The ergobaby metro checks those boxes. Or do you care more about being super lightweight? The joolz aer is only 13 pounds. Or do you want a large basket? The bugaboo butterfly is your pick.
Thread: "Recommendations for best travel strollers?"
We recently took the Bugaboo Butterfly to Japan, and it was absolutely perfect. Folded easily, quite navigable. Highly recommend that one.
Thread: "Bugaboo Butterfly 2"
It’s the weight. To be airline approved, it has to be under 7kg. The joolz aer is 6. AU doesn’t allow lay flat recliners at this weight. My guess is that they’re worried they will flip with young baby in them, particularly if you hang bangs or anything off it. The lay flat ones in market aren’t technically airline approved as they’re above 7kg
Thread: "Travel Stroller Help!"
Butterfly has been great for us! We have traveled with it across the US, in Europe, and in Southeast Asia and it holds up everywhere we go. It fits in the overhead and one time we even put it under the seat in front of us on a US domestic Jet Blue flight because the overhead bins were those tiny ones a 1-2 jumper plane (although I will say the more you travel, the less you want your stroller with you in the cabin). We’ve used it on cobblestone streets in Europe and literally dragged it on beaches in California. It’s really narrow so navigates tight spaces well. We can also carry it - even now with our two yr old in it - when there are just a few stairs to navigate. It does occasionally get stuck on a lip, so you need to apply pressure on the handle as you are driving it (I say this bc our normal strolled is the Vista, and you can basically run that thing over a snowbank with a single finger it drives so easily). Also, recline has been fine for us. We traveled at 4 mos with my daughter and she napped in it fully reclined even though it wasn’t flat. Now that she’s two, recline is more than enough. She mostly sleeps in it sitting fully upright as we are walking around. Easy to close and open, but you have to get used to pushing the button and flicking the wrist to open. Also, tons of space underneath. We regularly put the pack n play and or a very large duffle bag underneath when we travel.
Thread: "Bugaboo Butterfly 2"
Agreed. We went away at 5 months with the Britax one which was similar recline but this a much nicer pram. You'll be fine as long as you don't over think it :)
Thread: "Bugaboo Butterfly 2"
It will be fine for when you travel, but a full recline is still a good feature for older kids to nap on the go. Highly recommend the leclercbaby influencer. Felt more solid than the butterfly and comes with travel bag and bumper.
Thread: "Travel Stroller Recommendations [ON]"
I purchased the Ergobaby Metro 3 yesterday after doing a lot of research and trying out a few options in store. Tbh most of the travel strollers on the market are pretty comparable. At some point you end up debating between very minor differences so it’s fully up to you what you value most. The super compact ones tend to be a little worse on the stability and suspension and are more “flimsy” if it makes sense. I wasn’t a huge fan of the Bugaboo butterfly for this reason.
Thread: "New Parents of NZ"
We fell for the Edwards and Co marketing and quickly sold that pram off within 6 months. It was clunky and heavy. We ended up buying the bugaboo butterfly. It is a travel pram and folds up compact and can be carry on. We use it as our everyday and it is great! You can get universal adaptors that capsules of popular brands can clip into.
Thread: "Travel strollers"
We just got the Bugaboo Butterfly as our 2 year old is ~90th percentile in height and 9 month old is 99th percentile. It has a much taller back than the others. I can't recall the weight limit - probably 50lbs.
Thread: "Need recommendations for a reliable travel stroller for flying with baby [on]"
Bugaboo butterfly! We’ve travelled across the world with it. Folds up so compact, fits in the overhead bin (we’ve never been forced to gate check it, in its travel bag which has the dimensions listed), and the on one handed fold is *chefs kiss*. I wanted to get the Minu V3 but didn’t like how the seat is exposed when it’s folded. I was a bit sad that the Butterfly V2 came out shortly after we got the Butterfly V1 but the new features on the V2 addresses some of the minor inconveniences we had with the V1 like having a pocket at the back!
Thread: "Travel Stroller recommendation"
All our WestJet and Air Canada flights in the last 2 years unfortunately no longer allow strollers in the overhead bins. All are required to be gate checked regardless of size. That being said, I love our Bugaboo Butterfly and highly recommend.
Thread: "Travel stroller. Mostly air"
Hi. I’ve been working in this industry over 20 years and I have opinions lol. Joolz Aer. Bugaboo butterfly. Inglesina quid3. Baby Jogger City Tour. Joie nutmeg. Nuna TRVL LX. All of these are very solid options. If you go to my Instagram, I have a video on the quid that I put up yesterday and there was also a giveaway and a discount code. And full disclosure I do not make anything from that code if you use it it’s just to help people save some money. 🫡
Thread: "Recommendations for a stroller that's for an 8mo and fits overhead compartment on a plane? "
Bugaboo Butterfly!!! Took it on the plane for our trip to Florida no issues! And the shoulder strap makes it inconspicuous so we were never stopped and asked about it while boarding. The flight attendants thought it was the coolest thing ever when we were putting it in the overhead bin.
Thread: "Need recommendations for a reliable travel stroller for flying with baby [on]"
I haven’t taken mine on any trips outside of to the grocery store, malls, quick walks, etc. but I absolutely love this stroller! I still use my Cruz for longer walks and when we have snow but the Butterfly is just so easy, lightweight, and smoooooth 😍
Thread: "Travel stroller recommendations"
Bugaboo butterfly is soo easy to fold and unfold, actually stores a decent amount, has a built in strap for carrying over the shoulder, and is long in the torso for tall kids. It also is weighted well so that we can hang a diaper backpack on the handle without tipping.
Thread: "Best Travel Stroller?"
I got a minu v2 for 150 on fb marketplace It’s prob the best option for “travel but daily” the butterfly seems more flimsy
Thread: "WARNING: Bugaboo Butterfly 2 US model has no Lay-Flat Recline"
i am somewhat relieved by the list of improvements, which are definitely nice, but definitely not worth the $280 price difference between the new model and the original with the price reduction + target coupon. the increased front wheel size is probably the one thing i am genuinely wishing i could have.
Thread: "Can the Bugaboo Butterfly be used as a primary stroller? (everyday use?)"
I really recommend checking out The Stroller Workshop on YouTube! He does great and impartial reviews that go over the mechanics of each stroller. [Here](https://youtu.be/mRxpaBec6Js) is a link to his Bugaboo Butterfly video! He does go into stroller longevity so I think it would be worth checking out!
Thread: "Travel strollers"
We have the GB Pockit+ All-City and I regret it. Does it do the job? Yes. But I don’t think it was worth the money we spent on it, the seat is pretty cramped, the stroller itself is a bit rickety and I don’t expect it to last a long time or maintain resale value. Also, even in its most upright position, it’s pretty reclined and my daughter likes to sit up all the way so she can look around (especially while traveling). The fold is cool (which is why we bought it. My husband LOVES that fold), but isn’t that simple, and there’s no reason it needs to fold THAT small. As long as it fits in the overhead bin on the plane, that’s what matters (that feature was extremely useful when traveling with only 1 kid. Not having to wait for a gate checked stroller, or worry about it getting damaged by baggage handlers is invaluable). If I were to redo it, even though they’re super pricey, I’d go with either the Babyzen Yo-Yo or the new Bugaboo Butterfly. We have a 2nd kid on the way though (25 month age difference) and have given into the fact that traveling will just be harder now and our best bet now is a lightweight double we’ll be gatechecking.
Thread: "UPPAbaby Minu V3 or Bugaboo Butterfly 2?"
We went with the Minu. The Butterfly may be slightly better performance wise but Bugaboo has a notorious reputation for bad customer service (our local fancy $$$ baby store stopped carrying them because of it). People are also very turned off by how they are handling their current high chair recall. The company just rubs me the wrong way. I think the Minu is easy to fold and carry. I also liked that it reclines super far, so I could start using it with my then 3 month old. I bought it before the price hike and I would probably still rebuy it at the current price if it were like stolen or something.
Thread: "Drowning in the world of strollers - help!!!! 🌸"
Check out your local marketplace too - and look at travel prams. Sometimes you’ll pick up a good bargain- but some recommend not til bubba is (x) months old or 7kgs (from memory). They fold up reasonably small, some are even carry-on overhead compatible. A friend has a bugaboo butterfly and it’s amazing if you wanted to buy new with good resale value. I was tossing up between it and the new dragonfly after borrowing an Uppa Vista. I landed on the dragonfly because it could lay somewhat flat and the seat was reversible. It’s by no means as small as the butterfly, and is almost double the price but lightweight enough that I can fold it down and pick it up while still holding an 8kg babe. I even strap her in and push her around the house when I’m trying to do housework and it’s narrow enough to get around corridors easily
Thread: "WARNING: Bugaboo Butterfly 2 US model has no Lay-Flat Recline"
For anyone who stumbles on this, just a clarification- The recline in the US Butterfly 2 is exactly the same as the 1. I just tried them side by side.
Thread: "Joolz aer2 vs bugaboo butterfly 2 for plane travel abroad"
I've bought the joolz aer+ and love it. It's on sale at the moment so might be a good option if you want to save money, I don't think it's super different from the aer2. Not sure what you mean by the lie flat portion feels cheap. However if you didn't love it, go for the butterfly 2 if you think it has better features. I don't think many people will have actually compared those 2 exact prams because they're both so new. Did you try the first version and prefer it because I imagine it's similar? I think as long as it fits in the example bin they'll let it onboard.
Thread: "Please share any recommendations for a travel stroller ? "
We have a bugaboo butterfly and absolutely love it. It’s very easy to maneuver and collapse and we can fit a surprising amount of junk in the basket when needed. We also have a silver cross wave as our main stroller and love it as well. It’s flame retardant and phthalate free.
Thread: "Baby Yo-yo2, bugaboo butterfly or joolz aer?"
The dimensions for for southwest carry on was 24l x 16w x 10h and none of the three strollers were less than 16 inches wide. So I couldn’t say for certain any was a guarantee carry on. The butterfly was about half an inch wider over the yoyo, which is pretty minimal. I ended up choosing the butterfly for multiple reasons. It had easy fold. I found that folding the yoyo wasn’t intuitive and i thought that other caregivers would struggle too if it wasn’t something they did regularly. It also looked like the stroller would last us longer, as my toddler is one and already looked like he was outgrowing the seat back of the yoyo. I ruled out the yoyo and decided on the bugaboo over the joolz because it came standard with a footrest and the bugaboo recline seemed less disruptive if your kid was already napping. I have heard that the butterfly seat cushion pills quickly. I haven’t notice that on mine yet but this didn’t bother me too much because lets face it kids are messy and that seat isn’t going to look pristine forever for various reasons. I liked how the butterfly storage basket is extended in the rear for easy reach but just know you’re not going to get as much room as a standard stroller on any of these three choices. I was able to compare the butterfly and yoyo in person but couldn’t find the aer near me.

Thread: "Bugaboo Butterfly 2"
I bought a fully flat travel stroller (Le Clerc Baby Influencer) after I had my heart set on the Butterfly once the salesman told me it wasn’t a true lie flat. He said newborn ready as a statement is a bit deceptive as in Australia there’s allowed to be a slight angle, and 130-150 degrees is acceptable under the product safety guidelines. I ended up with our choice due to true lie flat/one handled fold/price. I think bugaboo and Joolz just don’t do it because there doesn’t have to be under Australian law in combination with some sort of cost saving I assume by not manufacturing fully lie flat. https://www.productsafety.gov.au/business/search-mandatory-standards/prams-and-strollers-mandatory-standard#:~:text=Strollers%20with%20a%20backrest%20that,either%20end%20of%20the%20stroller.

Obsessed with my Bugaboo Butterfly. Wish I had never bought our Uppababy Vista and started with it! We took both kids (8 month old sitting in stroller, 3.5 year old sitting on wheeled board) to the aquarium last Saturday in the snow and it was not perfect to push but still doable (10-15 minute walk outside to the subway from our house). Highly recommend.

Probably the Bugaboo Butterfly 2 if you don’t need it from newborn and the Joolz Aer 2 if you do.

Bugaboo Butterfly fits overhead. Great stroller. Haven’t had any issues with it. And you’re right, it does not lie flat or that low.
Thread: "[ON] Lightweight/travel stroller recommendations please"
Bugaboo butterfly is for sure better than the minu, yoyo, nano, etc. It can be folded with one hand, has the best canopy and basket, smooth push and maneuvering, and more. Hopefully there’s a baby gear store near you where you can see them together in person since the difference is quite significant.
Thread: "Joolz aer2"
Love it. I loved the Bugaboo Butterfly with baby #1 and wanted something similar with a bassinet for #2. I have the Aer+ rather than the 2 but it's just an improved version. I've even managed to push it on the grass and woodchip in our local park. The one hand unfold has come in handy too when transferring a sleeping baby. The only sketchy moment was when it was windy and baby was VERY small. It never felt like it was going to fall but it was swaying quite a bit. I'm definitely enjoying it more than my regular sized pram I had with my first.
Thread: "Nuna TRVL LX as only stroller?"
We don't have this stroller, but we do have the bugaboo butterfly which looks pretty similar. You could probably get away with it as primary stroller depending on how you plan to use it most of the time. But if you want to use it on any snow or rougher terrain then you'll likely need another stroller. The "off roading" capabilities of these ultra compact strollers are limited. But if you're mostly sticking to sidewalks and stores and don't live somewhere with snow for a large part of the year, then you'd be good with just this one.

Ergobaby metro plus- it has a full recline and folds up tiny. Much more affordable than butterfly or minu. If you don’t have one, get a snooze shade (available on Amazon) for naps on the go!
Thread: "Baby Yo-yo2, bugaboo butterfly or joolz aer?"
I had the yo-yo for 5 years and got rid of it for the joolz aer for my second child. The two handed fold of the yo-yo is a pain IMO. Mainly because the second step requires you to reach down and under a bar. So you have to hold onto the child, while crouching down on the floor to fold the stroller up. Butterfly is heavier than the joolz and yo-yo.
Thread: "Bugaboo Butterfly 2"
I’d like to know more about this too! We were looking at the Joolz Aer2, and the model here is similar to the pram above… but the overseas version declined much more/almost flat. We wanted the Joolz because it has a great one hand fold and the strap is a bit easier than the butterfly… so it’s disappointing we can’t buy it uh aus! (Our baby will be 4 months when we travel)
Thread: "Travel strollers"
I also did a ton of research and am so glad I went with the Aer+. I tried out the Yoyo, Butterfly & Trvl in a store, and I just like the Aer better (there were no stores that carried it in my area, so I just had to order it and hope for the best). The steering is so smooth, and the fold is really easy. Honestly, my only regret is that I bought an expensive travel system to be my "main" stroller, and now I never use it because the Aer+ is just so convenient.
Thread: "Bugaboo Butterfly review [ON]"
Don’t have the bumper bar but know someone who does. Her LO (~11mo) absolutely loves it and loves just hanging onto it. It still folds nicely with it on but slightly less compact, so it wouldn’t fit in an overhead bin with it on.
Thread: "Joolz aer2 vs bugaboo butterfly 2 for plane travel abroad"
Hi! Sorry to hear you would’ve preferred the Butterfly 2 after seeing it in person. Is a return still possible? I got the Aer 2 yesterday after comparing both side by side in store. Your points are fair, but I personally found a few areas where the Aer 2 stood out better. At least IMO. My LO is 12M and prefers sitting upright — the Aer 2 has a more upright seat and feels more cushioned than the Butterfly 2. I’m also tall, so the higher handlebar was a big plus. My hands felt more naturally placed, and the grip was much better thanks to the textured finish (unlike the smooth plastic on the Butterfly 2). The foot latch was also more accessible for my big feet. I didn’t get to compare this against the Butterfly 2. But for Aer 2 I could hang our nappy backpack on the handle without it tipping over, even with no weight in the basket or a baby in the seat. That alone was a big win, even if the basket’s less accessible. That said, I do think the Aer 2 fabric creases more, which makes it look a bit less ‘premium’ compared to the Butterfly 2. It might bug me eventually, but for now, it’s something I am ok with.
