UPPAbaby Mesa V2

The UPPAbaby Mesa V2 is an infant car seat designed for use with UPPAbaby strollers, featuring a no-rethread harness and a base with a tightness indicator for easy installation. It accommodates infants from 4 to 35 pounds and up to 32 inches in height.

Pros (+)

  • Seamless integration with UPPAbaby strollers
  • Enhanced safety features
  • Easy installation with tightness indicator

Cons (−)

  • Heavier than many competitors
  • May be outgrown earlier than expected
  • Not recommended by some CPSTs

Why parents like it

The Mesa V2 is praised for its seamless integration with UPPAbaby strollers, making transitions from car to stroller effortless. Many parents also highlight the added safety features that exceed basic requirements.

Common complaints

The weight of the Mesa V2 is a common complaint, especially for parents who need to lift it frequently. Additionally, several parents mention that their child outgrew the seat earlier than expected.

Best for

Parents who own UPPAbaby strollers and want a compatible car seat for easy transitions. The tradeoff is its heavier weight and shorter lifespan compared to some competitors.

Bottom line

The Mesa V2 is a solid choice for those with UPPAbaby strollers, but be mindful of its weight and the potential for early outgrowing.

Thread: "[ab] Uppababy aria vs Clek Liing?"

Definitely the Clek. It’s has better limits, making it a longer lasting seat that fits better in cars, especially smaller cars. The uppababy seats are generally not recommended by CPSTs, they are often outgrown early and are larger front to back so tend to take up more space in cars. The Aria especially has lower limits than the Mesa so you run the risk of baby outgrowing it even sooner (as early as 5-6 months). I’d recommend checking out the SEATS for Kids fb group if you’re looking for more info, they are really helpful.

We got the Graco 4ever 4in1 convertible car seat. It lasts 10 years and turns into a booster seat when needed. We used the Uppababy mesa too and my 8 month old looks a lot more comfortable in the Graco now. It doesn’t rotate, while they are convenient, I personally didn’t want one.

A car seat is only as good as the install. Some car seats fit better in different vehicles. There’s a group on Facebook called seats for kids and they will give you reccomendations based on your vehicles and kids height/weight. As well as your height which will help you figure out if you can still use your passenger seat! For example if you have a compact car uppababy mesa is not considered a compact seat front to back.

Thread: "Mesa V2 vs Nuna Pipa"

Hello. CPST here. Neither of these seats are recommended infant seats due to the install being difficult to achieve and them being large seats RF. Your vehicle still has quite a compact back seat and there needs to be space between the car seat and the vehicle seat (plus space for the passenger/driver to sit comfortably. That being said, I have not played with the mesa v2 yet so I do not know if they have fixed any of the issues it had. I know it is not any more compact than before. The previous mesa almost always required a noodle or rolled towel to achieve proper recline. It also had a tendency to float off the seat (the base would not touch the vehicle but would float above it at the edge of the seat). There are solutions to fix these two issues but for the cost of the seat there are much better options. For the pipa, 95% of those seats are installed incorrectly. They make it look like a super easy install but almost every single time it ends up being over reclined. You would think that's a good thing but it's not. Nuna actually has to write in their manual now that you likely need a rolled towel or pool noodle to make the recline work (and it goes at near the baby's head not near the back like usual). Once you make that adjustment it's almost always under reclined which is another issue especially for newborns. We do not want their chins to fall to their chests because it can block their airway. The infant seats we recommend the most often are the Graco snugride snuglock seats, the Chicco keyfit and the clek liing. I am not sure if Chicco makes an adaptor for uppababy. I don't think so. If you're looking for a higher end seat, the clek liing is an excellent seat. It's compact front to back and side to side and it has a lot of really awesome safety features. Clek's customer service can not be beat and the seats are made right here in Canada. It has a load leg which is a great safety feature and it has a base that is adjustable (recline) after install. It's the only seat on the market like that but it's a helpful time saver to adjust the recline once your baby grows. I won't talk about the other two because I don't think uppababy makes adaptors for them but they are both excellent infant seats as well. With all of that being said, travel systems (putting a car seat on a stroller) have really only one purpose. They are meant for popping the car seat on the stroller for a quick errand or to pick up something from the grocery store. They are not meant to be used in place of a stroller seat. Your child should not be in the stroller any longer than one hour (both in the car and elsewhere) for at least the first 3 months. It is not a safe sleep place. When in the car, you've adjusted the recline and know that your baby is safe at the proper recline. On a stroller or anywhere else it is not possible to check the recline to know whether or not it is safe. So it is not meant to be used for long periods of time. Some people will put their car seat on the stroller for walks or for going to the mall. They often loosen the harness because they're not in the car. This could lead to forgetting to strap them back in before getting back in the car or if the baby is not strapped in they are not safe, not even in the stroller. The baseline is that car seats are meant for cars and outside of the car there are many better ways to transport your child. Uppababy makes a bassinet as well as an infant insert for their stroller seat and both are great options that you can use from birth. You can pick up the bassinet on marketplace for super cheap because people don't use them beyond 6 months! There is no testing in Canada for car seats used on strollers (especially adaptors by other brands). We always say to pick a stroller that works for your lifestyle (because you will use it much longer than your car seat) and pick a car seat that fits your car. If you can find an adaptor to make the two work then great. If not then you can use the stroller with other attachments. In sorry for the overload of information, I wanted to make sure you had all the info to make your decision. If you would like the opinion of some other cpst's please feel free to join the seats for kids discussion community on Facebook. There are tons of us on there to make suggestions! I hope this helps ❤️

Have you had a chance to try them out in person? I was comparing between the same 2 car seats and in my mind I was favouring the Chicco Keyfit. But after going into a Snuggle Bugz and trying both on the Uppababy stroller, we ended up with the Mesa v2. For the following reasons: - The convenience of the compatibility (don’t forget the adapter costs money) and in the store the Chicco never felt like it attached to the adapter very well. - The sunshade on the Mesa was far better designed. The Chicco shade seemed to get stuck under the handle and stuck on the top of the car seat. - The only factor that favoured the Chicco for us was the material felt softer and the padding seemed well designed. But both were good. Although the crash rating might be better, all car seats need to pass a minimum safety test in Canada. I don’t think any brand new car seat you buy can be considered unsafe.

The original Mesa still conforms to safety standards (not recalled) and many people will use it for multiple babies. The V2 just has additional safety features and other features that go above and beyond the requirements. I have the original Mesa and would have no issue buying it again especially with the discount. It's already expensive for the amount of time you use it.

I wouldn’t pay the big bucks for an infant car seat, they are so short lived. I know people who like the Cruz. Personally, I’d spend the money on a jogging stroller, which will be a lot easier to push on walks, over grass, etc. but that’s personal preference.

It’s not just one person, so many people have said that was their experience! Seems super common. Thread: "Horrifying Experience With Uppababy support and Mesa v2 car seat"

I’m sorry you had that experience. I also understand your frustration that you don’t feel you should have to use a rolled towel to keep your baby’s position in the seat. I haven’t worked much with this exact Mesa model, but I can say that - as annoying as it is - a properly used “crotch roll” as we call them can be absolutely magical in positioning an infant in a car seat. As the baby grows, it will stop being necessary. I’m not excusing the customer service experience you had. I’m only hoping to assure you that a crotch roll is a known, tried, and true method of preventing slouching in a car seat. “Back in the day” they were pretty much universally used for infants. Now they are less common as more car seats are more adjustable, but they really do work. The trick is to place the baby in the seat and put their butt as far back as possible so their back is nice and straight. Then look at the gap between their crotch and the buckle. You want to roll up a burp cloth, small hand towel, or something similar that is the same thickness as that gap. As baby grows, gradually decrease the diameter of your rolled cloth until no cloth is needed at all. I assume she already showed you how the roll goes in the seat; but if you want to post a photo I’m happy to help you troubleshoot.

We have a second hand silver cross wave and the clek liing. We were torn between this, the uppa baby or the bugaboo kangaroo. It comes with both seats and the bassinet at time of purchase. The bassinet is overnight sleep safe. The uppababy we disqualified because in double mode baby has to be on the bottom, and the bugaboo we didn’t like the fold, the bumper bar release or how difficult it was to transition between modes. The silver cross wave is not well known in CA, but checks all your boxes. I’d see if you can find a store nearby to test it out, our local baby store had them in stock and we found it as good if not better to push than the bugaboo. Edited to add: it is HEAVY though. I’m fairly strong so don’t mind the added weight of getting it in and out of the car, but if you struggle to lift 30lbs I would not recommend.

I can’t comment on the Chico. I ended up going with the mesa 2 years ago. But the reason it’s often out grown out (even with the same maxes) is just due the placement of the harnesses. It has the same height max but kids will grow out due to the 1 inch rule first (for the most part). It’s the same with convertible and combination seats later on. Often the max height and weight will never be hit due to the harness height. Hope that helps :)

Thread: "Uppababy Mesa vs Chicco Keyfit 35 [CA]"

The outgrown by 1” rule applies because of where the straps are positioned usually. For bucket seats, the straps have to be under baby’s shoulders, rounding like a backpack, while still having that 1” of space between their head and the top of the seat. The mesa is outgrown earlier generally because of that rule. If you have a lower or average percentile child, you might not have to worry. But some of us (like me) had giant 95 percentile babies. You just never know before they’re born.

Lawyers literally read through forums to find issues with baby gear then place Facebook ads and try to gather a group to start a lawsuit. The fact that there’s a lawsuit should be completely meaningless other than to indicate that others may have had the same issue.

It still is a major issue that they're not recognizing or even acknowledging. I had planned to use the seat for more babies and that's why I spent the extra money.
