Nuna Rava

💎 Best Premium

The Nuna Rava is a convertible car seat designed for children from 5 to 50 pounds, allowing for extended rear-facing use up to 49 inches. It features a no-rethread harness, multiple recline positions, and is made without flame retardants.

Pros (+)

  • High safety ratings and comfortable for long rides
  • Flame retardant-free fabric is a big plus
  • Easy to clean and maintain

Cons (−)

  • Installation can be complicated without extra tools
  • Recent recalls have raised concerns for some parents
  • Some find it bulky for smaller cars

Why parents like it

Many parents appreciate the Rava's high safety ratings and the comfort it provides for their children. The flame retardant-free fabric and easy cleaning are also frequently mentioned positives.

Common complaints

Installation can be challenging, with some parents needing additional tools to secure it properly. A few have raised concerns about a recent recall affecting certain models, which has made them hesitant to recommend it.

Best for

Parents who prioritize safety and comfort in a convertible car seat. The tradeoff is a higher price and possible installation difficulties.

Bottom line

The Nuna Rava offers excellent safety and comfort, but be prepared for potential installation challenges.

Thread: "Rear-facing vs forward-facing "

I would say there may be some nuance about when to flip exactly. For instance, I've had this debate with a few parents and the conclusion seems: * Don't switch to front facing just because they're over 2, you should go rear facing longer if you can. * Some car seats really allow rear facing forever. Nuna Rava is 50 lbs rear facing. Some smaller girls can be up to 6 years old and rear facing still. * It's personal choice and there are safety drawbacks, but most said generally by 4 and as long as they aren't some tiny 1 percentile weight/size, they like to flip to front facing. It's a balance ultimately, but at 4 they're more at the age where they want to interact with the adults, they also want to play "I spy" with the adults or older siblings, etc. Yeah, you can go up to 6 with a Rava for instance but I have only heard of 1 parent who was insistent "not until she's 50 lbs." * I offered our Rava to our SIL who was visiting. Their child (~4 years) had been front facing for 1 year already, and found out that the Rava supports rear facing for her LO still but even as the most granola mom, she said "let's install it front facing, she's used to it already."

I will keep mine rear facing until they reach the seat limits (Nuna Rava 50lb 49in) for safety but mostly because I like to eat snacks in the car without my children knowing 😂😂

Thread: "Pricey convertible car seat? Worth it or marketing?"

As others have said, all carseats on the market pass the same testing. It's pass or fail so no 1 seat is "safer" than another. What makes a difference is the user friendliness of a carseat... in other words, which carseats can parents install correctly without fucking up the install and making it unsafe. You'd be surprised how few parents read the manual before attempting to install a carseat. Also car compatibility is important too since some carseats literally cannot get a safe install in certain vehicles. With all that being said, the main reasons for the price differences are additional features that make the seat more user friendly and/ or more luxurious. Nuna is like the Gucci of carseats, very luxurious materials and padding with lots of extra features (including a belt lock off that makes it really easy to install perfectly every time). The rava is a highly recommended carseat but there are other options that are just as easy to use for a fraction of the price. These are the most often recommended, user-friendly carseats on the market right now (that are also compatible with *most* vehicles and rearface to 50lbs) in order from most affordable to most expensive: ● Graco extend2fit *3 in 1* (make sure you get the 3 in 1 as the 2 in 1 has a lot more issues that make it less user friendly) Pros: very compact front to back rearfacing which makes it great for small cars, easy to install, has an extender panel to give the kiddos more leg room rearfacing once they get close to that height/ weight limit Cons: can't fit 3 across, no seatbelt lock off, replace after any minor accident ● Britax poplar Pros: has seatbelt lock off which makes installing it SO easy, can fit 3 across, has options for machine washable covers Cons: no high back booster mode, it's a newer seat so there aren't a lot of reviews out yet ● Britax one4life Pros: has a seatbelt lock off, optional anti-rebound bar for extra crash protection, has options for machine washable covers Cons: some people have issues with it being difficult to tighten the harness (FWIW I've never had this problem with our carseat), can't fit 3 across ● nuna rava Pros: seatbelt lock off, can fit 3 across, also very compact front to back rearfacing Cons: honestly I don't ever see complaints about this seat besides the price! ETA: The evenflo revolve 360 extend is also a highly recommended carseat! Just make sure you read the manual thoroughly before you install it since it's one of the few carseats on the market that uses a top tether rearfacing. Also it doesn't fit well in small cars so that's something to take into consideration. Bonus points if you get the gold version because they'll replace the seat for you if you get into an accident! I am not a CPST but I will be soon and I'm very passionate about carseats! If you have any questions please feel free to dm me!

Thread: "Clek Floof, Nuna Rava and Britax One4Life"

CPST- i recommend joining the seats for kids discussion group. They will give you great info. In case you can’t join I will give you a little info to get you started. The nuna rava is not a recommended seat by techs. It has super exaggerated limits and is often outgrown much earlier than the stated limits. It also has no level indicator so it’s hard to know if it’s at a safe angle for your baby when rear facing. Definitely one I would recommend having a tech install if you went with it. For the super elevated price there are many better seats. The clek foonf is the only seat from your list that is recommended by techs. It’s built like a tank and has some amazing safety features for forward facing. It has lower limits than the fllo and the britax one4life but it has the patented react safety system for ff that reduces the impact on the child in a collision. Clek is the only seat manufacturer in Canada that actually publishes their testing scores. Their customer service is impossible to beat. The fllo would also be a great choice and has the 50lb rf limit but same height limit (43”) as the foonf. Both excellent seats and go on sale often. The britax one4life i own personally (mainly for the extended rf limits and the fact that I transport a couple different children). I love the clicktight feature of it. That being said the clek seats are also a breeze to install so I wouldn’t say the Britax has much of an advantage over clek install wise. The 4 in 1 seats are usually not recommended by techs because people use them thinking they will be able to use all the features. When you get to ff mode, Britax seats do not allow headrest interference at all. If your headrests are not removable (read your vehicle manual) you may not be able to buy a Britax seat. In addition, seats that say they have a booster mode do not necessarily fit your car well when in booster mode. They do not necessarily fit your child well either. That’s hard to predict when it’s still many years away. I’m general, we say if you’re buying a 4in1 expect to still buy a dedicated booster down the line as your 4in1 will be gross and chunky by the time your kid is ready for a booster. All 3 seats you mentioned are medium to large when rf. What kind of vehicle do you have? Your seat choice should be largely dependent on that. Sorry for the long message. I hope this helped somewhat.

It always makes me laugh a little when people say X does not look very comfortable for my baby or kid. My toddler frequently naps in his toy chest full of toys. Babies don't think about comfort like we do. I mean their prefer place to sleep us (for many of them) is on us. If you prefer the Rava, go for it! It might be slightly easier to install or more comfortable. I personnaly have 2 Extend2Fit (my oldest is almost 5yo) and they are totally fine. I live in Canada so the Rava is even more expensive and does not go up to 50lbs, so Extend2Fit is better for us. I still cannot fathom buying 500$++++ car seats. Especially that most of them are not even safer or anything.

They’re both the top rated car seats in [crash tests](https://www.babygearlab.com/topics/vehicle-safety/best-convertible-car-seat). The fabric won’t make a difference to your baby, BUT the reason I prefer Nuna over Graco is that they don’t spray their seats with flame retardants. Nuna uses wool, which is naturally flame resistant. This was one of the top reasons for me choosing Nuna, as flame retardants are carcinogenic.

Rava is not a recommended seat by CPSTs. It only has one recline, so it can be quite large when rear facing. It's also outgrown by height quite early. All seats in Canada are safe. We don't have safety ratings here. A seat either passes the texting, or fails the testing and doesn't get sold.

Looking at my car seat, it says that you can switch it to forward facing at 25 pounds, which we did. According to the AAP and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), children up to 3 years old should stay in a rear-facing car seat until they reach the top height or weight limit suggested by the car seat's manufacturer. We had the same issue with car sickness also. She once choked on vomit while I was driving and it was one of the scariest days of my life. https://nunababy.com/usa/rava-convertible-car-seat?color_ref=16366

Thread: "Tell me your car seat recommendation!"

Convertible carseat or infant carseat? The most popular expensive option that's not rotating is the Nuna Rava. Very very easy to install and clean. For budget friendly options I think the Graco extend 2 fit is very popular. Not as easy to set up and what not but not a bad budget option. When it comes to rotating Convertible seats, a lot of people like the Evenflo 360 for its price. Problem with rotating carseats is the mechanism can be finnicky (depending on brand), and the rear facing weight/height limit being lower than most regular convertibles, but not all of them. When it comes to infant carseats it really depends on what stroller your getting, and if it's compatible with certain strollers to be used as a travel system, etc. I think the most popular option when it comes to premium brands is the Nuna Pipa RX. To more budget friendly brands I think Chicco has a good safety rating with the Chicco key fit 35.

It was so easy to get in and secure properly the first time without any of fuss. It’s “simply secure” installation system is just that and quite impressive. It’s pricy, but would buy if I could go back. The Graco 4ever DLX can be a hassle to get tight so it doesn’t slide side to side so not the best for changing cars. Once in, it works very well though and if just leaving in one car, would recommend.

This. There are a few feature differences, but no one here can answer if they are worth the 200 dollar price tag difference. We have and love the Nuna Rava but looked at both that and the Graco Extend2Fit. - Nuna Rava is wider and has more padding. Is this better? Not if you have multiple children across the back or a small car. Not if you’re lugging the thing to check onto an airplane. - Nuna Rava’s upholstery is wool so you don’t have any fire retardant chemicals in the fabric. This is nice — but 200 bucks nice? - The Nuna Rava has nicer reclining features which we’ve used exactly once over five years and two kids on a really long roadtrip.

Thread: "Nuna Exec vs Cybex Calisto G 360"

Edit- Cybex is doing a strap recall of some of their other car seats. The Calisto is NOT included but wanted to mention it. I'm keeping my Calisto, but something to watch for sure! I just went down this rabbit hole and probably spent 3 months trying to figure out what car seat to buy. I wanted to add my comment to this thread because we bought a Nuna Rava, tried the Nuna Revv on vacation and then settled on the Calisto over the Exec due to the rotating and sunshade. Opinions: 1. I saw an Exec in person and it looked amazing. I can't say anything but that. I was heart set on it. It looked like a first class car seat- large and plush. I was all for it, then 2. The Nuna Rava went on sale on PB. We liked it, but I started developing wrist issues again (had De Quervain's develop during late pregnancy that lingered through two cortisol shots postpartum) and I found myself really killing my arms and back lifting my 24lb baby into it. 3. We went to Colorado on vacation and borrowed my in-law's Nuna Revv. We LOVED the turning feature. It something you don't think you need until you try it and then you never want to go back. It was a game changer for both my husband and I. The two things that bothered me on the Revv were that the straps were pretty short- it only goes to 40lbs which is a really low weight- and the straps only pull out so far and at 24lbs she was already seeming tight in it. I had to really pull the strap, yank it, then still bend her arm to get her in. I also thought the install wasn't as tight as it could be. 4. I hemmed and hawed again for weeks and went down the rabbit hole of sites like consumer reports, safe in the seat, etc., and I just couldn't find enough data to sway me one way or another. CR seems to do their own testing, but then they were recommending seats that had recalls and were facing investigations. They didn't even rate the Exec. They also highly rated seats that were blasted by users on other platforms. I finally pulled the trigger on the Cybex Callisto G. The car seat arrived and install was super easy. We put it in my husband's truck as I had a 4+ hour road trip to my parents coming up the following week and I would take his beast of a vehicle. I am obsessed with this car seat. I may even list my Nuna Rava on facebook and grab another Callisto. The turning factor is one handed, goes in both directions, and is super smooth. The fabric is nice- I'm not crazy about the perforations it has (I just see that as another location to trap snacks, vomit, etc.), it looks almost like an athletic mesh? But it seems very breathable. The baby hasn't had a sweaty back yet like she has in her Rava, and it is fully machine washable, which is great. I love the position of the cup holders. On the Rava my 15 month old can't reach them yet, which is a pain in the tush, on the Cybex she can and they remove easily to wash. The two reasons I can't live without this car seat: the sun shade and the length of the straps. Because it's meant to work until the child is in booster height/weight the straps can pull out super far and I am in love. No more having to yank so hard on that center pull strap and then bend my baby's arm into a tight shoulder. These pull out so far they could reach the driver's seat and I am so happy. It makes getting her into it a breeze. Add to that the sun shade, which already saved us on the drive south. I don't know why more manufacturers don't do the sunshades in the convertible seats- it's an amazing feature. I was able to pull it down for her nap post lunch break and it was amazing. I realized how much I missed that in the Rava. I have not tried the app with the Cybex safe seat options. I will probably look into that at some point, just because it can't hurt to have another safety feature in place, but right now it's not necessary. Now that we're trying for baby #2 I realized how crucial that rotating will be as my belly (hopefully) grows. I hope this helps someone!

My priority is to be able to be rear-facing as long as possible so the 6 inches would make a huge difference. I really like the swivel feature but I'm not sacrificing having my son rear facing longer for a little convenience. Additionally, people were saying that as the kid gets older they can get themselves in the car seat so the swivel isn't necessary. I'm going with the Rava. My response will be simple - you will need a convertible car seat. These do not have bases and they stay put in your car because they are heavy. If you have a second car, you will want to purchase 2 car seats instead of switching back and forth. Your daughter should probably be in the toddler seat of the stroller also. We don’t not live in extreme cold weather, so we just hug/carry my son with a jacket draped over him and then put him in the car seat. If you will be traveling or have grandparents who might have your daughter every once in awhile, you can consider getting a travel car seat (like the Cosco car seat) that is cheap and light weight. For reference - I chose the Nuna Rava for my son. I got it on sale and the price difference between that and the Nuna Exec (which is also a booster) is the same as buying the booster later on and I’d rather have a brand new one lol. I have the Wayb Pico for travel, which is not yet suitable for your daughter since she is still too young.

But I’m also of the belief that if you go slim, you’re sacrificing comfort and/or safety because there is just less room for padding etc. They have one of the highest crash test ratings. Rear facing is 50 lbs/49 inches (my 99 percentile 3.5 year old is 42 inches so we’re anticipating we might go straight from rear facing to booster). No flame retardant chemicals. We also got the Nuna rava, and when I was researching it last fall, it was ranked #2 in terms of safety. I can’t remember who was rating it or where I read that, so I know this information isn’t helpful. But I decided that #2 combined with the lack of flame retardants and extended rear facing was enough for me to splurge on the rava. I’ve been very happy with it, and we’ll be getting a second one for the next baby, maybe even skipping the baby bucket altogether. ETA: the rava and clek foonf have the highest rear facing weight limit on the market at 50lb, according to [strolleria.](https://strolleria.com/blogs/news/clek-foonf-vs-nuna-rava-convertible-car-seat-comparison) Also, now that I’m looking at the stats again, it has a higher max height capacity at 49”, which is also probably a reason I chose it since our kiddo is on the taller side for his age.

Why not the Nuna Revv? It rotates which is such an amazing design function!

We love our Nuna Rava as well but I wouldn’t say it’s shallow. It took up so much space in our compact SUV. We upgraded to a mid size SUV and the passenger can now sit quite comfortably but can’t push all the way back.

We love the Rava. Okay, reason to do Rava and not the exec - 6+ years is a really long time for a car seat. They get nasty. I clean ours regularly and the amount of puffs and goop that gets into it is astounding. Personally I don’t want an Exec because when it’s time to transition to a booster I think the thing will have hit its limit. We’ve been using our rava for 1.5 years and I love it. It does wash up well too!

Thread: "Graco car seat or splurge for Uppababy?"

If you’re going to splurge I would go with Nuna over uppababy for the stroller and car seat. But my advice to your question would be to get the cheaper infant seat and splurge on the convertible car seat a little later on. My baby was only in her infant seat for 2 months before we moved into a convertible. We got the Nuna rava and she loves it. It’s so comfortable.

Thread: "NUNA RAVA VS GRACO EXTEND2FIT"

I actually have both. I feel like the Nuna Rava is slightly more comfortable (he sleeps in it more)… but he’s totally fine with Graco extend to fit. My son is 2, 35lbs and tall. He can still rear face in both

Clek has similar fabric if you want to explore those options. We have a foonf and are very happy. CPSTs are regulated. Here’s more info on their governing body… https://www.cpsac.org CPST recommendations are often based on quality of fit and install. You can have a fancy seat with all sorts of safety features, but if it’s incorrectly or poorly installed/fit then those features really mean nothing. I find their recommendations also focus on how long a seat can accommodate a child rear facing, since children are safer rear facing longer. Here are some CPST critiques of the Rava… - lower than average harness height (won’t last as long) - single recline and can’t use rolled towels to adjust (can lead to poor fit and limited duration for use) - includes a lot of padding, which must be removed for infants over 11 lbs (can lead to people using padding they shouldn’t be or paying for something you’re not even using) - lots of small steps to proper install which leads to improperly installed/used seat - anti rebound is kicked off easily and the seat can’t be used safely without it. Lots of parents of toddlers struggle with this - difficult to clean - some reports of people finding the straps tough to tighten.

Thread: "When did you switch out of a convertible car seat?"

My son is 6 and is almost 49 inches and 43 lbs. very tall and lean. His pcp wants him to stay in the nuna rava still because he’s built like a string bean. He is not thrilled since “everyone else” is in boosters!

Thread: "Nuna Rava redesign"

I have the revv, but I’m pretty sure it’s the same design with the button cover to adjust the harness. It took maybe 2 or 3 times of remembering where it was and how far back the button is but there’s no hassle whatsoever, I don’t need to look for it it or anything anymore. We loosen the straps every time we take the baby out and it is really a nonissue

Not sure about the version in the states but the nuna has a high weight limit but is often maxed out much earlier due to harness height

Are you in the US? I’ve never heard of cars with built in booster seats! Way cool.

Thread: "Do I need a Nuna pipa"

You will need a convertible car seat (like the Rava) eventually, no matter what. So having one now doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t get an infant seat. Some things to consider if you skip the infant seat: - Will baby be born in a season with cold or bad weather? It’s easier to buckle them in indoors in the infant seat. - Is your convertible seat actually good for newborns? A low weight limit isn’t always enough. Check the reviews on csftl.org - Do you have a stroller solution for the newborn? Not all strollers can accommodate a newborn without a car seat. You’ll want to check and you might need an accessory like a bassinet. Most people get an infant seat before switching to convertible. We live in a mild climate, have a bassinet stroller, and skipped it and have been happy with that choice though!
