Nuna Pipa RX

The Nuna Pipa RX is an infant car seat designed for ease of use and safety, featuring a lightweight design and compatibility with various strollers. It includes a base for secure installation and can be used without the base for added convenience during travel.

Pros (+)

  • Lightweight design makes it easy to carry and install
  • Seamlessly clicks into various strollers
  • Can be used without a base for travel convenience

Cons (−)

  • Installation can be tricky, often requiring additional tools
  • Some parents report it can feel heavy over time
  • A few have experienced durability issues with components

Why parents like it

Parents praise the Nuna Pipa RX for its lightweight construction, making it easy to carry and maneuver. The ability to click it into a stroller seamlessly is a major plus for those on the go.

Common complaints

Installation issues are a common concern, with several parents mentioning that the seat is often installed incorrectly. Additionally, some parents report that the seat can be heavy to carry over time, especially when the baby grows.

Best for

Parents who need a lightweight car seat that easily transitions between car and stroller. The tradeoff is that proper installation can be tricky and may require additional tools.

Bottom line

The Nuna Pipa RX is a great option for parents seeking a lightweight and easy-to-use infant car seat, but be prepared for potential installation challenges.

Thread: "Should I forego the infant car seat for a convertible seat?"

Money wise - skip the infant seat and get the convertible. Convenience wise - the infant carrier is so much easier, especially in cold/rainy weather. I can buckle babe up in the warm/dry inside, run to the car and click the seat into the base, and done. BUT, this only lasts as long as they fit in the infant carrier. We are at 9 months now and still within the weight/length requirements. Hoping to make it through the winter (but probably won't) lol

We have the Nuna Pipa, super light weight if you’re planning to be out and about a lot it’s a nice perk! I was able to carry the car seat around to drs and stuff no problem post partum. Friends have Uppa Baby but says it’s heavy, but they bought the whole stroller system so it worked for them.

We were very happy with our Pipa. So much so we bought the rava now that our kiddo is older. It is so light weight and easy to maneuver. Also the pockets for the buckles are really nice.

Thread: "Mesa V2 vs Nuna Pipa"

Hello. CPST here. Neither of these seats are recommended infant seats due to the install being difficult to achieve and them being large seats RF. Your vehicle still has quite a compact back seat and there needs to be space between the car seat and the vehicle seat (plus space for the passenger/driver to sit comfortably. That being said, I have not played with the mesa v2 yet so I do not know if they have fixed any of the issues it had. I know it is not any more compact than before. The previous mesa almost always required a noodle or rolled towel to achieve proper recline. It also had a tendency to float off the seat (the base would not touch the vehicle but would float above it at the edge of the seat). There are solutions to fix these two issues but for the cost of the seat there are much better options. For the pipa, 95% of those seats are installed incorrectly. They make it look like a super easy install but almost every single time it ends up being over reclined. You would think that's a good thing but it's not. Nuna actually has to write in their manual now that you likely need a rolled towel or pool noodle to make the recline work (and it goes at near the baby's head not near the back like usual). Once you make that adjustment it's almost always under reclined which is another issue especially for newborns. We do not want their chins to fall to their chests because it can block their airway. The infant seats we recommend the most often are the Graco snugride snuglock seats, the Chicco keyfit and the clek liing. I am not sure if Chicco makes an adaptor for uppababy. I don't think so. If you're looking for a higher end seat, the clek liing is an excellent seat. It's compact front to back and side to side and it has a lot of really awesome safety features. Clek's customer service can not be beat and the seats are made right here in Canada. It has a load leg which is a great safety feature and it has a base that is adjustable (recline) after install. It's the only seat on the market like that but it's a helpful time saver to adjust the recline once your baby grows. I won't talk about the other two because I don't think uppababy makes adaptors for them but they are both excellent infant seats as well. With all of that being said, travel systems (putting a car seat on a stroller) have really only one purpose. They are meant for popping the car seat on the stroller for a quick errand or to pick up something from the grocery store. They are not meant to be used in place of a stroller seat. Your child should not be in the stroller any longer than one hour (both in the car and elsewhere) for at least the first 3 months. It is not a safe sleep place. When in the car, you've adjusted the recline and know that your baby is safe at the proper recline. On a stroller or anywhere else it is not possible to check the recline to know whether or not it is safe. So it is not meant to be used for long periods of time. Some people will put their car seat on the stroller for walks or for going to the mall. They often loosen the harness because they're not in the car. This could lead to forgetting to strap them back in before getting back in the car or if the baby is not strapped in they are not safe, not even in the stroller. The baseline is that car seats are meant for cars and outside of the car there are many better ways to transport your child. Uppababy makes a bassinet as well as an infant insert for their stroller seat and both are great options that you can use from birth. You can pick up the bassinet on marketplace for super cheap because people don't use them beyond 6 months! There is no testing in Canada for car seats used on strollers (especially adaptors by other brands). We always say to pick a stroller that works for your lifestyle (because you will use it much longer than your car seat) and pick a car seat that fits your car. If you can find an adaptor to make the two work then great. If not then you can use the stroller with other attachments. In sorry for the overload of information, I wanted to make sure you had all the info to make your decision. If you would like the opinion of some other cpst's please feel free to join the seats for kids discussion community on Facebook. There are tons of us on there to make suggestions! I hope this helps ❤️

Convertible carseat or infant carseat? The most popular expensive option that's not rotating is the Nuna Rava. Very very easy to install and clean. For budget friendly options I think the Graco extend 2 fit is very popular. Not as easy to set up and what not but not a bad budget option. When it comes to rotating Convertible seats, a lot of people like the Evenflo 360 for its price. Problem with rotating carseats is the mechanism can be finnicky (depending on brand), and the rear facing weight/height limit being lower than most regular convertibles, but not all of them. When it comes to infant carseats it really depends on what stroller your getting, and if it's compatible with certain strollers to be used as a travel system, etc. I think the most popular option when it comes to premium brands is the Nuna Pipa RX. To more budget friendly brands I think Chicco has a good safety rating with the Chicco key fit 35.

It is one of the few seats that has the feature that makes it easy (rigid latch). Most infant seats *are* a pain to use baseless because you have to use the seatbelt, looped through slots on the base, adjust recline angle, etc.

Thread: "Infant Seat vs Convertible Car Seat"

Join a car seat safety group. I’ve learnt a ridiculous amount from the FB group I’m in. I’ve seen a lot of car seat safety experts say that most babies don’t get a really good fit in the next stage car seats until at least 4-5 months. I’m so glad I have an infant carrier, I find it useful for so many reasons! Being able to clip it onto the pram is absolutely essential for me (especially as I live in a flat, so I pop her on the pram to wheel us down to the car) or for very short journeys - I have a small car and it’s really difficult to bring the bassinet pram attachment with me for short journeys. So when I’m going to a baby group, I put the seat back on the pram chassis and walk her in. All the stuff I’m carrying can then go in the pram and she comes out as soon as I get in (I am super conscious of her only spending short periods in the car seat).

Thread: "Nuna Pipa RX or Nuna Rava?"

Although you could use the Rava from birth, there are two things to consider if you think you’re going to do that. 1. Do you want to be able to use the car seat on your stroller to make traveling/running errands a bit easier? Rava won’t allow that. 2. Are you due in the winter? A lot of people who have babies in the winter start with an infant seat because it is easier to get them properly harnessed inside the house and then take the car seat outside rather than try to do everything outdoors in the cold. Regarding strollers, obviously Nuna makes their own line. But the Pipa is a very popular car seat and will work with tons of other strollers on the market. There are lots of stroller and car seat videos on all of my accounts that might be a good place to start. Good luck! - Jamie, CPST

Uppababy is currently facing class action lawsuits over the safety of their car seats. We bought the Aria as part of the travel system for the Cruz and noticed our baby was sitting really sketchy in it once the infant insert came out. Ended up getting the Nuna Pipa RX and it has been much better for him. Love the stroller but big pass on the car seats.

Nuna baby! My husband did a lot of research before and we settled on the Nuna pipa rx for his infant seat. Easy to install the base and car seat on the base, and also easy to secure the car seat without a base. You can also buy extra bases to make it easy to switch between cars. The base model is also relatively light but I know they make a version that’s lighter than the one I had. It’s a nice comfy seat and it worked well for his first 13m! Has a large weight and height maximum of 32lbs/32in. We also love the stroller as well!! We use it constantly and it worked great with the car seat. We continued using Nuna and he has the Nuna Rava for his convertible car seat

I definitely got sticker shock from the Pipa at first, but we were able to get a 20% discount from Albee Baby (husband’s a veteran and they do an awesome military/first responder discount), and I have to say I’m super impressed so far. Baby girl could be here any day now and we installed it in the car last night, it’s so light and was very easy to install. I love the magnetic straps to make it easier to get them in and out, and it clicks in and out of the base like butter. We ordered the travel system with the Nuna Mixx Next and I’m also sold on that — I picked up a Mockingbird secondhand to have as a back up just in case, and the difference between them is pretty stark side by side.

I highly suggest an infant seat for your baby because of the time of year you'll be giving birth. I have 2 November babies, and the infant bucket seat is an asset to keep them warm in those winter months. Most bucket seats are outgrown by 8/9 months if you have a regular to bigger baby, but sometimes you can use the seat longer. The bucket seat comes in the house with you, so you don't have to carry baby in -20 out to a cold seat in the vehicle. even if you have a garage, you can imagine how it would be at the grocery store or anywhere bringing them in and out. We have the Nuna Pipa, and we chose that one specifically because you don't need to install with a base, so although we do use a base in our daily driver, if I want to bring baby in my husband's truck, or a taxi, or a courtesy car while my car is getting a long service, then it's very easy to just buckle the seat into a different vehicle.

Every one of my friends who has babies that have used uppababy infant car seats always complains that their baby isn’t comfortable in them, they’re too firm, and not supportive enough. Multiple of these friends have made the switch to nuna and they all love it. So when I built my baby registry, I opted for the Nuna Pipa RX, and we couldn’t love it more for our baby. He is so comfortable, loves being in his seat, and it’s a huge plus that it’s easy take apart, wash, and put back together. It’s also very light to carry, which is nice especially as baby gets heavier. I wash his car seat cushions about once every two weeks and it comes out looking brand new every time. The relx base is a plus too, love being able to have him more reclined as an infant than most other car seats.

If you want the convenience of clicking the car seat into the stroller then you should get the Pipa to start with and then eventually transition to the Rava once baby becomes too big for the infant seat. I personally started off with the infant seat (Pipa) but my baby didn’t seem comfortable in it and she got heavy fast, so we transitioned her to the convertible seat (Evenflo revolve) at 3 months instead of when she outgrew her infant seat. I have the Nuna Triv Next stroller but other strollers are also compatible with the Pipa infant seats (you just need to confirm).

Pipa RX has a car base to go in and out of the car quickly and URBN doesn’t have a car base so you will need to secure the car seat each time. You can still secure the car seat to the car without a base for the Pipa RX but the Urbn does not have a base you can attach to so you have to secure it without a base. If you want to compare the Pipa lite RX, it has a base so it’s closer in comparison to Pipa RX, just lighter. Pipa Urbn is more of a travel car seat I would say. You COULD use it as an everyday car seat if you don’t mind strapping/latching them in all the time but I much rather have one with a base to go in and out really quickly, especially as an infant car seat. I did tons of research on baby car seats/strollers and convince my friend to switch from getting the pipa Urbn to RX for the convenience of the car base.

My mom has an NX and I’m on my 3rd RX and my dad is on his 4th so plenty of experience driving them. I also had a rental GX for awhile. If I had to deal with rear facing child seats I would stay away from the NX. You really need leg room with rear facing child seats to ensure distance. Additionally the small door opening is a challenge. Surprisingly I found the GX’s rear seat smaller than my last two RX’s. It’s also a little taller which makes getting a car seat into harder. I think the RX is great. And add the safety aspects that an RX offers is even more of a plus.

This 100%. When my baby transitioned out of the infant seat, I hated carrying them to the car. Especially when you have a diaper bag and other handheld items to carry. We can walk now, and that makes a world of a difference. At least with an infant seat, you can put them in and put their shoes on and put the blanket on them and then just carry and click them into the car really fast. I live in a cold climate where it gets down to -40°C and I hated having to carry my toddler out and try to strap them in quickly. And if you have a stroller that has an adaptor for that infant car seat, they can sleep in the car and then you can plunk them into the stroller and they’re still asleep. So you don’t need to change much in your day…. the only problem with this, is that they get sick of the car seat really quickly and when you get back into the car, they’ll scream to be let out. You absolutely do not need an infant seat, especially in this economy. But you will just give yourself an extra pain-in-the-rear year of carrying them in and out.

If you can afford to get a PIPA or similar system I would. The benefit of the PIPA is if the baby is asleep you can keep attach them to a stroller or take them out of the car with the infant still in the PIPA. If you only get the Rava, then the only option to get a sleeping infant out of the car is to unbuckle them and lift them out of the car seat into the bassinet, stroller, or home. Our first child never stayed asleep in the car seat once the car stopped. However, our second child stays asleep in the car seat to make use of it.

Most people I know did not like the UB Mesa. I had the UB stroller with a nuna pipa car seat and ring. It really wasn’t a big deal to use the ring! I say go with the Chico!

Nuna pipa lite or peg perego. Both excellent seats for tiny babies and have high safety ratings. A lot of people like the chicco but I don’t like that it doesn’t offer adequate head support. Both are around the $300 mark. It’s also the recommendation from certified car seat specialists. My hubby just got my daughter’s seat checked out yesterday.

Definitely consider weight with infant car seats. We got the Nuna Pipa and now that baby is almost 7 months old I can’t imagine anything heavier. We paired it with the Bugaboo Fox 5 stroller.
