Ikea Antilop

🥇 Best Value

The Ikea Antilop is a budget-friendly high chair designed for infants and toddlers, featuring a simple plastic design that is easy to clean. It includes a removable tray and can be paired with optional accessories like a footrest and cushion for added comfort.

Pros (+)

  • Affordable price point makes it accessible for many families
  • Extremely easy to clean, with a removable dishwasher-safe tray
  • Lightweight and easy to transport

Cons (−)

  • Deep seat may not be comfortable for smaller infants
  • No footrest can make it less ergonomic for toddlers
  • Design can create a tripping hazard in tight spaces

Why parents like it

The Antilop is frequently praised for its low price and easy-to-clean materials, making it a practical choice for messy mealtimes. Parents appreciate that the tray can be removed and cleaned in the dishwasher.

Common complaints

Some parents find the seat too deep, which can make it uncomfortable for smaller children. Others report that the lack of a footrest and the design create a tripping hazard.

Best for

Parents on a tight budget who need a straightforward high chair for occasional use. The tradeoff is that it lacks some features found in pricier models, like a footrest and a more adjustable seat.

Bottom line

The Ikea Antilop is a practical high chair for parents looking for affordability and ease of cleaning, but its design may not suit everyone.

The Ikea Antilop chair costs like 15 times less and is perfectly usable. It doesn't have any bells or whistles, but it's served us well for a long time.

The one from Ikea. You can get a footrest on Amazon, or buy cute decor packages elsewhere if you want.

I love it. Cheap and cheerful, easily adjustable, you’re going to encounter it out in the wild at restaurants too. You could literally spend 10x as much on a trip trap but why? Alternatively, START with the ikea. If you hate it then buy another one. On and get the inflatable pillow for your little one when they’re still smooshy small.

We have both. The $180 Tripp trap was rejected many many times in favor of the ikea Antilop by our toddler. Now it’s in the garage. I’m only clinging on to the Tripp trap in case our second refuses the Antilop. 😒 my garage is like a furniture and stroller store storage room, waiting to see which models are acceptable to the next kid.

We also liked the ikea chair and got a cushion for when baby was smaller and a foot rest because OTs on Instagram convinced me it was important. it’s currently at its 3rd home with some friends and will make its way back if/when we have another baby - it’s holding up like a champ!

Stoke Tripp trapp, second hand if you’re on a budget. The biggest thing for me is proper seating position while eating. I hated the bucket seat on ikea ones and a little baby wouldn’t sit properly in it. I don’t want anything padded as it’s harder to clean and they are only in there for a meal

I have a Tripp Trapp, my parents have the Antilop. Dear god, I hate that Antilop so much. Everyone fucking trips on it. Doesn’t matter if it’s tucked in the corner, the legs suddenly find their way to trip you. But it is good for the price and easy to clean so there’s that. If you have a large dining area, go for the Antilop. If you care about longevity and your toes, go for the Tripp Trapp.

Doesn't look like the foot rest goes high enough for small babies. I would go with the IKEA high chair plus an added footrest, and maybe a seat pad or other accessories to make it feel a bit nicer. Foldable is nice to have but functional is better for the baby.

Thread: "Tripp Trapp or IKEA Antilop?"

The Tripp Trapp can last much longer than the Antilop. In theory, your child will never grow out of it. In reality, some kids want to switch to a regular chair sooner so once they grow out of the Antilop you’d be fine. From my perspective as someone who works in early intervention and is trained in feeding therapy, a supportive seating arrangement is SO important! So we have the Tripp Trapp for my daughter and kept the baby seat on until she turned 3 a couple weeks ago. Keeping the baby seat on helped her stay seated for meals. Now she uses it as her chair and knows this is her special seat. We only have 2 other chairs at the table where we eat (one for mom and one for dad) so there’s no option of sitting elsewhere. This has worked well for us. I can absolutely notice a difference in how well she eats meals when in her Tripp trapp vs in an adult chair, sitting on the ground, or out and about. I plan on using the Tripp Trapp at meals as long as possible and potentially using it for a desk chair for my daughter after that. I also love how you can use the Tripp trapp without the tray so the child can more easily be part of the table/meal. The Antilop doesn’t have that feature. My vote is Tripp Trapp because it’s a great investment! That said, Antilop with the added accessories is not a bad option for the first year of solids or so.

We’re going on 3 years with ours and no plans to stop any time soon. Once converted to a regular chair, it can be used through adulthood. Originally we planned to pass it down to younger siblings but my kiddo is very territorial over “her” chair (in a cute way, she loves it) so we ended up just buying another for our second child.

We have two tripp trapps. Our kids are 2 and 9 months. My sister has 2 and my dad also has 2 at his house for grandkids. We love them because literal adults can sit on them lol. And I feel like they aren’t an eyesore like most high chairs. That being said, if we didn’t have the tripp trapps, we would absolutely have the ikea antilop.

Yep we got rid of the impossible to clean fancy highchair after our first and got the cheap Ikea one. We did also get the inflatable cushion and 2 covers for it, and my Dad made a wooden footrest to be a bit more ergonomic, but I live how easy it is to clean. BTW for a deep clean pop off the legs and the tray, and put the seat and the tray into the dishwasher. I used to do it once every couple of weeks - seat in the bottom and tray in the top rack. EDIT forgot to say, our 4yo can still fit into the high chair, although we did stop using it when he was about 2.5. So it might last longer than you think.

The IKEA Antilop can also be customized to add a foot stool, cover, placemat, footrest etc. There’s a website my friend told me about. It’s called “yeahbabygoods” Then you’ll want to get yourself a “catchy” to catch all the food droppings. They make them for various top selling high chairs. Best purchase ever especially if you have pets.

I was deciding between the mockingbird and the ikea chair. I went with the mockingbird after adding up the cost of all the accessories I would have to buy for the ikea and considering how low the weight limit was and how soon I would need to buy a toddler chair/booster seat. The mockingbird was still more expensive, but we got most other baby things secondhand and this was our one splurge. It’s been an absolute dream to use, and was very nicely packaged and easy to assemble. After wiping food off the mockingbird three times a day I can’t imagine having to clean the fabric parts I see on regular high chairs. If you look at reviews on YouTube you can get a referral code for a free bowl/utensils/cup set.

We have it and love it. It's sooo easy to clean and I like the fact that it makes our child sit very upright in it (we used the inflatable blow up washable cushion Ikea sell in the early weaning days) . We've used a good number of different highchairs at Airbnb's etc, and I could no cope with a highchair with any fabric! I get what someone else says about the legs sticking out, but we've found that it's really not that bad. Yes you will kick it a few times, but it's lightweight so it's not painful or anything. We also bought a footrest for it on Etsy. If you're not sure, you could always find one going cheap/free on Facebook marketplace, or even try one in a restaurant as loads of places have them.

You really don’t. We love the ikea chair and you can buy a foot rest for them and still come in at an incredible total cost and I am by no means frugal. My favourite part of the Ike’s chair is that when they had an especially messy meal I throw it in the tub or yard and hose it down and it looks as good as new afterwards.

I used the IKEA chair and tray (with the inflatable insert to pad the chair out while my daughter was small). Cheap ($45 for the lot and I think that included shipping), easy to clean, best decision I made- as soon as my daughter was a tiny bit bigger (a year old? Maybe a bit older than that?) she moved onto a kid sized chair and table. So she used the high chair less than a year anyway!

You can buy cushions for the antilop but meal times shouldn’t be more than twenty minutes long anyway, so comfort isn’t a huge factor. I prefer the antilop because plastic is so much easier to clean and babies get food EVERYWHERE. And sometimes you have to step away and clean the kid immediately and the food gunk really sticks on when you get around to cleaning it
