Thread: "Using breast milk with a bottle"

Per our LC: The best nipple shape for mimicking baby’s latch are the kinds that go wide to narrow, not the ones that look breast like (such as como tomo). Examples: * Lansinoh Natural Wave (we use these, after trying every bottle brand- we use a slow flow Pigeon brand nipple with them), fit with the Phillip Avent glass bottles. * Evenflo Wide Neck * Dr. Brown’s (has glass bottle option) Wide Neck Okay at mimicking: * Phillip Avent Terrible at similar latch muscles: * Como tomo

Thread: "Baby bottles glass vs plastic"

I’m using glass because micro plastics and pfas freak me out, plus I don’t think it’s any harder to use glass. I use the Evenflo glass bottles. They don’t have any paint on them so there’s not really any chance of them having lead in the paint as has been reported with some bottles (not sure if that’s true but I wanted to be cautious). They hold over 8 ounces. I use the standard neck balance nipples with them because they are supposed to be better for breastfeeding than the ones that come with the glass bottles. If you do that you have to buy the plastic bottles that come with them. I think they have a glass version of the wide neck balance but it was out of stock. They clean pretty easy! I don’t use a microwave sterilizer but I feel good about sterilizing them in the pot since they’re glass.

My baby will not take a bottle if she senses I’m around. I assume this is because she prefers milk straight from the tap. My husband and mom have successfully given her a bottle but I had to step into another room. Can you try to leave the room and have someone else try? We’ve had success pace feeding with Evenflo Balance bottles.

All of the reviews I’ve seen of them say they are annoying to store and will often leak/spill. Not to mention that even though they look like a boob, they actually do not promote good/similar oral motor skills as feeding at the breast. The most “breastlike” bottle (I.e. that actually promotes similar oral motor skills and promotes proper oral development) is actually one where the baby can get the nipple deep into their mouth, use their tongue in a cupping motion, and have their lips widely flanged and relaxed. These nipples actually tend to be a bit narrower and gently sloped. Some great bottles/nipples would be the Evenflo balance+ bottles, pigeon bottles, Lansinoh, and dr browns narrow or Evenflo vented+ The Evenflo and pigeon come in glass, which I love! Much easier to clean and faster to warm up!

Thread: "What bottles to buy for newborn??"

I personally hate the dr browns bottles bc they leak and there are so many parts to wash, but they did work well for my baby for a while. I would buy different nipple sizes, as the size 1s are pretty fast flow. You could try premie or transitional nipples (both available on Amazon). We now use the evenflo bottles which are much easier to deal with.

Our lactation consultant recommended the Evenflo balance+ bottles, and our kiddo accepted them no problem. Also worth noting that babies used to nursing often drink slower (even from a bottle) because they are used to that style of "paced feeding".

If the nipple passes the "triangle test," meaning the nipple is in the shape of a triangle, it will encourage a deep latch and promote strong oral development. Evenflo Balance, Dr. Brown's narrow, Lansinoh, Pigeon, NUK perfect match are a few.

We use Pura stainless steel bottles with EvenFlo Balance+ and Pigeon nipples (as recommended by IBCLCs). Since glass is banned from just about every daycare we've looked into, this seemed like our best option to avoid plastics. We haven't tried the Pura sippy cup or straw inserts yet, but now that we're at 5mo we're going to be soon!

I’ve never heard of Lifefactory so I can’t speak on those, but we used the glass Evenflo Balance + bottles/nipples with my first and we loved them so much we’re planning to use again when our second is born! We were doing both nursing and bottles so the nipple shape was most important to us over anything else. I don’t think you should worry much about the baby holding the bottle.. honestly since they’re glass they’re pretty heavy, so by the time my baby was old enough to hold it up at the right angle and drink out of it himself, we had already fully moved on to straw cups and other things. If you do foresee letting your baby hold it themselves, evenflo has plastic bottles you can use just for those specific moments. But (especially if it’s your first baby) I would recommend you and your husband give baby the bottles! It was some of the sweetest bonding time I look back on with my first, and it goes by SO fast.

A lot of people are saying it will work, so that’s great, but I’d definitely try out one set before you open them all up. I know you aren’t looking at MAM, but I didn’t find them quite compatible with the MAM ones - something was just slightly off. So not all wide mouth is the same. Also for the Evenflo nipples, make sure you look up how to open the valve! You’ll need to make sure they’re open every time before use or baby will collapse the nipple. Ask me how I know 🤪

My IBCLC said it was important that the nipple allows for a proper latch for oral development. There’s lots of bottles that allow for a proper latch and don’t encourage shallow latching. Dr browns (the narrow ones, not the wide bottles), Lansinoh, pigeon, nuk perfect match, gulicola, evenflo balance (wide and classic), spectra, munchkin bond, boon curve (not the regular one), quark and there’s more. We use a mix of Lansinoh, pigeon and spectra

I've used a lot of glass bottles, and still do. I have a 1 year old and we've done through a lot. Gulicola on Amazon is awesome, but if you can find Evenflo Balance Wide in glass... even better. Evenflo ones were my favorite! Eta; Gulicola, Evenflo and Pigeon bottles are all wide mouth so any wide mouth nips will fit. If you stick with "wide mouth" which is typically what is recommended by SLP and Peds for oral development, you can buy the same nips. I prefer Pigeon nips because they are sooooo much softer than Lansinoh... and my 1 year old with 8 teeth has not broken any of the Pigeon nips with his fangs!!!

My baby also won’t take any pacifier, and will only take the lansinoh bottles. They have a very gradual slope and she’s able to get a beautiful latch with them even with a moderate upper lip tie. She’s 5 months old and we still use the slow flow nipple. I don’t think we will ever size up. We also tried the narrow dr browns and evenflo balance wide. Both were also great, she just prefers the lansinoh. She goes from breast to bottle with no issues.

My IBCLC suggested evenflo balance + bottles. Baby has had a good time going between bottle and breast with this nipple shape (standard neck bottle). I was using Philips Avent bottles before, and while baby took the bottle like a champ he had a hard time going back to the breast (it was suggested to me because of the long narrow nipple with wide base). Something to consider if you're also planning to breast feed.

I was previously using the como tomo bottles and then my little guy randomly started rejecting it one day and developed a preference for the boob. If you’re interested in nursing in addition to bottle feeding, I would check out this lactation consultant’s blog post. She specifically recommends to AVOID Comotomo. If you’re planning to exclusively bottle feed, then I suppose it doesn’t matter. https://www.rachelobrienibclc.com/blog/bottles-for-breastfed-babies-introducing-a-bottle-part-1/ I used Philips Avent Natural glass bottles (not the anti-colic bottles) at first because I wanted to avoid plastic and they were the most widely available glass bottles. At the time we were also struggling with nursing, so I wanted to find a nipple that did not cause bottle preference.  I used the **Evenflo Balance Wide** nipples. They worked with the Avent bottles and rings, but the nipple is too tall and gets smushed by the cap. I didn’t notice any damage caused by smushing, but we also tried to avoid putting a cap on when possible. We didn’t get out of the house too much and have to take the bottles out anyway.  Eventually I gave up on nursing/latching and transitioned to exclusively bottle feeding. My ~3 month old baby showed signs that he was frustrated by the Evenflo Balance slow flow rate so I bought **Pigeon** nipples. Their “Super slow” is good for newborns. However I need a complicated set-up to get them to work with the Avent glass bottles. I bought this [Maymom set from Amazon](https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B01LXW0JIP) since I needed it for pumping at work. I use the Philips Avent glass bottles + Maymom collar + Pigeon nipple + caps from the Evenflo Balance Wide nipples. We still primarily use this combination nowadays for my 10 month old. He takes the Medium flow Pigeon nipple now.  **Quark** is another brand that fits onto the Philips Avent glass bottles rings and the Avent cap  smushes it down a little less. My baby accepted all of those nipples (except mine I guess lol)

Thread: "Best bottles for preemie babies"

Same. Dr Brown's were good for pace feeding, because the OT taught us to hold the bottle like a pencil. That wouldn't have worked with wider or heavier bottles. We switched to Avent Natural Glass as soon as possible though. ETA - If you want to breastfeed you should pick a bottle that let's the baby get a deeper latch. The Lanisoh ones and Evenflo Balance are supposed to be the best for that and the Dr Browns are good too. The problem with bottles like the Comotomo, they look more like a boob, but they actually encourage baby to latch really shallow. Full disclosure though, I'm not breastfeeding and I like the Comotomo bottles otherwise. I'm hoping to switch to them when my baby is able to hold his own bottle.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned yet. Nuk perfect match can fit Nuks simply natural glass bottle. The one with white letters. Also evenflo balance wide fits the spectra’s wide collar. The one that comes with the pump. Also grosimmi ppsu bottles, not glass. They’re interchangeable with spectra. Which also means that their straw inserts are interchangeable.
