Thread: "Baby refusing bottle. Any tips?"

Hi! Mom of a 5 month old bottle refuser. My son stopped taking a bottle at 2 months when he lost his sucking reflex. Got close, but never got him back in it. We are giving up and moving straight to cups. Here’s a summary of what I learned from my lactation consultant and speech pathologist (disclaimer, the speech pathologist is my brother, so this was off hand advice, not official advice). First, you gotta try all the bottles. I mean alllllll the bottles. Make sure you’re using the right flow too (likely med flow, but if you have a fast letdown maybe want to move up to a higher flow). Many people have success with Lansinoh bottles. MAM, evenflo wideneck bottles, como tomo are also bottles I’ve heard people have had success with. At 4 months you can also try trainer cups such as the munchkin latch sippy cup trainer. Try different positions, offer the bottle at different times (when baby is hungry, as a snack bottle, after a nap, before a nap, ect.). Have different people offer the bottle with you in the room and not in the room. Try warming the milk and nipple or maybe cold milk. Try the old bait and switch or wrapping the bottle in your shirt. If none of those things work you need to start from scratch. First, offer just the nipple during play. Move it all around baby’s mouth and lips. Have him open and close his mouth on it. Do this until baby is comfortable with the nipple. Then add the nipple and collar, then the nipple collar and bottle. Always during play. If baby starts to fuss stop and try another time. Don’t rush this step. It may take a week or so until you’re ready to add milk to the bottle. Once baby is comfortable add 1 oz of milk. If you heat your milk make sure to taste it first. If it’s soapy it’s high in lipase and you might need to scald it after pumping. Keep offering the 1 oz snack bottle until you can gradually work your way to 2 oz, 3, ect till you hit a full feed. Most importantly, don’t stop practicing. Be as consistent as possible with the bottle play and feeding. Best of luck! I’ve been tied to my son for 3 months now. It’s super super tough.

Thread: "What bottle worked best for your breastfed baby?"

Lansinoh are the only ones my first would even touch. The biggest thing for us was upping the nipple speed though. My boobs were NOT at all "slow flow," so slow flow nipples on bottles just pissed her off.

We love the Lansinoh bottles. We also have the Phillips Avent, but we replaced the nipples with evenflo and pigeon nipples, which have a better shape for breastfed babies than what the Avent came with. The pigeon nipples are quite pricey and not really any better than the Lansinoh (they say they are slower flow). I don't really like the evenflo ones, just because they are harder to get in and out of the collars.

We did all of the following and slowly we were able to wean off of the extra steps: Dad gives the bottle, mom is not in view Swaddle for the bottle (even though we had stopped for sleep) Dim/calm room Lansinoh bottles

Yes Lansinoh are our favorite! We tried Mam, comotomo, philips Avent and Lansinoh has by far outperformed all of them.

Lots of good advice here! Definitely check for high lipase, use Lansinoh bottles, give the bait and switch a try, try having someone else give the bottle when you're not home. Also try letting your baby play with the bottle and nipple when it's not feeding time (we put the nipple in one of the holes of an Oball). Also experiment with temperature, some babies like it very warm, others prefer cold, mine likes it lukewarm. Make sure the nipple itself is warm. You can even meet with a lactation consultant specifically to work on bottle skills.

I would say Lansinoh bottles are the best. We got Tommee Tippee this time but I think they’re overhyped. I also do both bottle and breast so we haven’t had an issue with them I just don’t like the bottle shape is all lol

Like others have said here, I used lansinoh bottles, tried loads but they were the only teats my baby would tolerate. Never looked back.

We tried 13 different kinds of bottles. After a week at daycare of refusing any bottles and being fed by syringe, usually only accepting 2oz a day he now uses the lansinoh ones just fine. He's 5 months old.

Definitely have some on hand. Lansinoh bottles are good and have nipples that can be a good breastfeeding transition. Phillips Avant have some natural flow ones too. I would also recommend having a breast pump, if even just a manual one.

My baby did not have the same challenges that yours does, but Lansinoh bottles are our favorite, even more than Dr. Brown’s! She’s almost 8mo now and they’re our go-to. I’m so glad you’ve found a bottle that works for your baby! ♥️ It makes things way less stressful. We also liked MAM at this age if you want to branch out eventually.

Thank you! I was doing some research and read really good things about MAM too.

From the day my baby was born we gave her one bottle per day. At 3 months she suddenly started refusing bottles completely. We still try every day but it's not always successful. We've had the most luck with the lansinoh bottles

We started out using Dr. Brown's at the suggestion of our lactation consultant. Around 3 months old, baby decided she didn't like that bottle anymore. 🤷‍♀️ We've been using the Lansinoh bottles for the 3 months since then, and her daycare teachers are impressed by how well she takes a bottle.
