Bugaboo Donkey 5

The Bugaboo Donkey 5 is a convertible stroller designed for families with one or two children, featuring a modular design that allows it to switch between single and double configurations. It includes a large sun canopy, a spacious storage basket, and is compatible with various car seats and bassinet options.

Pros (+)

  • Smooth handling and easy to push, even with two children
  • Converts seamlessly from single to double stroller
  • High resale value due to brand reputation

Cons (−)

  • High price point may not fit all budgets
  • Bulky when folded, can be hard to store
  • Some parents find it challenging to maneuver in tight spaces

Why parents like it

Parents praise the Bugaboo Donkey 5 for its ease of maneuverability, especially in urban settings. The ability to convert from a single to a double stroller is frequently highlighted as a major benefit for growing families.

Common complaints

The price is a significant drawback, with many parents feeling it is too expensive for what it offers. Additionally, some users mention that the stroller can be bulky and challenging to fold, particularly in tight spaces.

Best for

Parents looking for a high-quality stroller that adapts from single to double for twins or siblings. The tradeoff is the significant investment required, which may not suit every budget.

Bottom line

The Bugaboo Donkey 5 is a great choice for parents needing a flexible stroller, but be prepared for its premium price tag.

Thread: "Best double stroller?"

Here’s what we did if you want to copy: 1. Get Graco infant car seats because their click connect system opens you up to a ton of different base and stroller options plus safe and affordable 2. find a Graco ready 2 grow tandem on Facebook marketplace- you can usually get them for a reasonable price. The tandem is great for when they’re in the buckets because it makes running into the store SO much easier. But also this phase is so temporary so don’t spend a ton of money on a tandem setup. 3. think about your lifestyle and what’s important to you. For us, we went with the Zoe twin because it’s narrow and very lightweight. It also has a deep recline, so they’ve been able to use it from pretty early on with infant inserts. It has great steering and folds easily too! We also found a bob double on Facebook marketplace for a great price. Incredible suspension and they’re ALMOST old enough for us to run with them, but in the meantime it’s been great for walks. The bugaboo donkey 5 can accommodate side by side infant car seats, but you must be careful about which brand you go with as not all are adaptable (in my research, it was usually the more expensive brands that worked with it…). People in this group love it- I’ve never used it. Cons: it is a bit bulkier/wider compared to some. VERY expensive, and not as widely available on the secondhand market. A pro: it can “shrink” to a one seater which is nice for when you need to go somewhere with just one. I believe there’s also a Canadian brand that can do side by side infant car seats and is a little bit less money, but I can’t remember the name. Most side by sides do NOT allow for double car seats. Other popular recs on this sub: mountain buggy duo, city mini GT, bumbleride indie twin. At some point, you’ll probably want to get a cheap double umbrella stroller for quick daycare drop offs when they’re too big for infant car seats but also not quite great walkers yet (if you’re doing daycare). Hope this helps!

Thread: "Bugaboo pram irritating me - rant"

I have had an uppababy vista for almost 5 years and recently got a second hand bugaboo donkey primarily for use on public transport. They’re both fantastic prams but made for completely different uses. The bugaboos were made primarily for the European market, so heaps of public transport, uneven cobblestone roads etc. not so much putting it in cars. Uppababy was made for the American market when bugaboo was pretty much the only luxury pram brand and it wasn’t really suitable for them. So you will find the uppababy prams tend to be way easier to pack down and fold more compactly, but may not have the same suspension etc as the bugaboo. I think understanding the differences in the foundations in those two main luxury brands really helps make sense of the pros and cons of both. Fwiw, I love my uppababy prams (I also have a minu which i got about 4 years ago) so much and I think that may be more what you’re looking for. But they’re not for everyone so I would ask in local baby groups and the online uppababy groups if they have a similarly aged pram that they would swap. My minu I can fold one handed and the vista I can fold two handed but in one step (if its forward facing)

I actually got a double after my last baby. Well the Bugaboo Donkey (mono). I had used bigger prams before and preferred something sturdier as cheaper small ones have broken on me before (I bet they are better now though). I LOVE the donkey and how sturdy it is. Side basket is something I always needed and could not live without.

Upvoting for second-hand! We got a Bugaboo Donkey 2 in like-new condition with a bassinet, seat, cold weather cover, and a couple other accessories I can't think of right now for $500 on Facebook marketplace. I think to get the whole setup new is like $1600+. We plan to start trying for kid #2 within a year so we wanted a stroller that could handle both if needed. I would encourage at least getting a stroller that has a bassinet option. I feel a lot better putting my little one in that vs having her strapped into her carseat for walks.

Thread: "Talk to me about double strollers for children 2 years apart."

I have the bugaboo donkey and have had it for many years. I’m not a fan of double strollers where one kid is on top of the other and I prefer the baby to be in a bassinet as opposed to attaching their car seat. I got it when I went from 1 kid to 2 and use it everyday walking kids to school, walking the dogs, going on outings etc. I also have a wagon but really only bring it to the beach or a local farm. I now have 4 kids 5 and under and still love it. I have added a board seat off the back for my 3 and 5 year old to use, my 2 year old is in a front facing seat and my 3 month old is in the bassinet. I have no problems going through doors, it fits easily in the trunk of my van or my husband’s SUV, and will continue to work for us until only 1 kid needs a seat (it compacts down and has a shopping bag insert instead of a second seat). Highly recommend! It will also resell at a good value whenever I’m done so that will be nice!

Thread: "Stroller recommendations for twins?"

I really wanted a side-by-side stroller because I wanted to be able to see both babies equally when they are facing me. I got the Bugaboo Donkey, which I love. It's a very popular twin pick, as well. It is crazy smooth to operate. It has optional bassinets. It can be collapsed to a single stroller if you only have one baby with you. Although it is bigger than a tandem stroller, it can still fit in doorways, etc.

Thread: "Overwhelmed with types of strollers [on]"

You sounded just like me before I bought my stroller!! Like I spent HOURS trying to decide watching YouTube and TikTok’s lol. My heart was set on a Bugaboo Donkey or Fox, went to the store, pushed it around and tried it out.. annnnnd I HATED it. I ended up going with the UPPAbaby Vista V3 with the Mesa V2 car seat. It was important to me to be able to put the car seat on the stroller versus having to take her in and out of a car seat that just stays in the car. The last thing I’d want is to wake my sleeping baby and since I’m due in March when it’s still cold, I liked the idea of being able to bundle her up in the house and have the car seat be warm rather than sticking her in a freezing cold car. I really liked the way it felt pushing it around, I loved how easy it was to click the car seat and bassinet we got in and out, the fold is so easy and it’s not crazy big. I also liked that it can turn into a double stroller if/when we have another baby (I was always told to love your stroller as a single stroller and if it turns into a double that’s just a bonus!). I would go with whatever YOU liked. I know the Nuna Mix is really popular and that’s for good reason! I also really liked the way it felt pushing it around, but ultimately decided to go with the Uppababy solely just on personal preference. No matter how much research you do you’ll always find something negative about the one you like so try not to focus too much on the negative reviews of things! :)

The main gripes people have about the Vista are these: * bassinet must go on bottom with toddler seat on top for double configuration without rumble seat * low weight limit on rumble seat * pretty bulky You might consider something like a donkey as well? They have a side by side bassinet /toddler seat configuration.

Just wanted to co sign this comment! I have the v2, yes it's bulky but that bulk allows for all of the above benefits. I have so many mum friends push my pram for a minute and they always comment on how much of a dream it is, easy to push, steer, turn, feels so lightweight, how jealous they are of my 1 second setup and fold down, basket space, and some of these mums have a Bugaboo! When I push my friends' cheaper prams (Babybee, Steelcraft) I can immediately feel a difference and struggle. I've pushed a Bugaboo Donkey which is IMO what people who get vistas sometimes want instead, and it's just so much easier to push and assemble, especially when using it as a single. When you have an older toddler you'll be tempted to downgrade or maybe grab a second hand travel pram which has it's own benefits. But for babyhood I think you will be happy with the vista :) If the dot points above appeal to you.

We bought a Bugaboo Fox for our first 2.5 years ago, absolutely no regrets other than kinda wish we’d got the donkey as number 2 is coming soon and struggling to justify buying ANOTHER big, expensive pram. If the Kangaroo had been out then I would’ve 100% bought that. We do have a travel pram as well, which tbh we didn’t buy but I now leave in the car for mall trips etc. we didn’t use it at all when she was little though.

For us, yes! We spent around $1800 for a bugaboo donkey 2 duo. Our kids at 5.5 and 4 still use it to this day so we’ve definitely gotten our money’s worth. It’s so customizable and is pretty narrow for a side by side.

Thread: "Why is choosing a baby stroller so hard???"

that’d be my one advise - try everything as if you’d be by yourself with babe no help. manoeuvre it around the store with one hand. folding it, carrying it, maybe even attaching the car seat if they have it in store etc. I think i totally underestimated that i might have to carry it up a few steps of stairs by myself or lug it onto the bus etc. do they have one of those fake terrains in store too so you can try how it drives over different terrains such as grass, sidewalk, gravel? we ended up going with the bugaboo fox 5 which we LOVE. not wanting to add another one to your list, but they do a double - the donkey 5. last tip- if you’re unsure i’d go with a single baby stroller. i know you want to plan ahead but if you end up hating it it’s easier to sell and get a new one. i know people who are on babe 2 and stroller 3 or 4 because they just didn’t like the one they initially got.

I have a mocking bird and I do like it, but if I could go back, I would get a new Zoe twin with the car seat adapter for the baby. The mocking bird was great when we used the bassinet attachment for baby, but once we were done with that, we didn’t really use it much. It’s heavy and kinda clunky to put together. Takes up a bunch of space in a trunk too. I got a used Zoe twin off FB for a trip I was taking and have absolutely loved it! The Zoe is a bit more than the mocking bird (I think) but totally worth it imo. Or maybe even the bugaboo donkey- which I’ve never had it just seems perfect but it’s also crazy expensive

I have the vista 2 and am really happy. When I compare it to our travel pram, or friends prams, you really can tell the difference when it comes to the suspension and ease of pushing. This is so important now I have a toddler and live in a hilly area without many footpaths. In saying that, if I had my time again I would have got the Bugaboo Donkey. We wanted 2 under 2, but thought it would be tempting fate to get a side-by-side with our first. Am now solidly pregnant with number 2, with an 18 month gap, and the reality of the “top and bottom” arrangement of the vista isn’t feeling ideal. I’ve also seen so many people just using the Donkey in single mode and it would have been so fine. Also my sister has the Bugaboo Fox and the only difference I can tell is the Vista has a bigger basket.

I got the Edwards & Co Olive as it has the option for a second seat in a top and bottom arrangement. I chose it after trying out other big prams in the store (Vista V2 and Donkey) and this one by far felt the most manoeuvrable, light and has a really small turning circle. My first is almost 1 and I don’t regret it one bit. I went power walking almost every day on mat leave and still do multiple times a week and it’s such a smooth ride, also fits heaps in the bottom compartment. Zero regrets!

Loved the 2nd hand cameleon I bought and loved the new donkey I upgraded to. No issues with quality, and the hoods are second to none. Expensive but good quality accessories as well. Have taken them both "off road" and they've done well, and also do well on rough pavement. If you don't want to risk paying full price, you can get very good quality second hand ones through fb marketplace or gumtree, often with extra accessories thrown in.

Bugaboo donkey twin has been fantastic. We use it everyday. We did not use infant car seats - straight to fixed convertibles that stay in the car with no issues. We used the bassinets until the kids signaled they wanted to sit up and now we use the rumble seats. I take it to cafes, the park, on trails and it fits in my Toyota Corolla (the bassinets did not- we transported them in my husband’s truck). I get compliments all time on my stroller, it’s easy to use and set up once you get the hang of it.

Not going to lie, with the double config it is wide. We have 2 under 2 and the side by side set up works for us, we also have the scooter attachment for it. We asses what we’re doing or where we’re going before deciding what config to bring. But it’s an amazing pram, one of my favourite features is that you can strip the seat covers off and throw them straight in the washing machine.

Get the Bugaboo. We have the Vista. It’s heavy and I hate the straps with a burning passion. It rides smoothly, huge storage, but my god it’s bulky. It also has an awful setup if you have or plan to have more than one kid. Our friends have a Bugaboo Donkey and it was so much nicer and easier to maneuver. They weigh the same but the Bugaboo folded down better and I like the shopping basket feature as an add-on. The Bugaboo straps are elite. Now that the kid is almost two, our daily is a Bugaboo Butterfly. She’s lanky and I like that it has a footrest that comes with it and not as a separate attachment. Lightweight and indestructible because we travel and between me and the airlines, our gear gets treated like deep fried trash. Nordstrom or baby boutiques where you can try gear out will be your bff.

Check out The Stroller Workshop on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@barnevognverkstedno?si=Jp9ZVHiDziBqE2Yb. He repairs strollers for a living (not sales), so the reviews come from a repair perspective. Your ideal stroller will depend on your lifestyle, and you may find that you need different strollers for various purposes, such as an all-terrain stroller for trail walks and a compact one for travel. I initially purchased a Vista, believing it would be great for when we have a second child. While the Vista worked well for one child, we found it quite uncomfortable when using it for two kids. The weight distribution made pushing difficult, and the smaller child needed to be placed farther away from the parent. We've since switched to a Bugaboo Donkey, which we prefer much more.

I love my single to double, a bugaboo donkey 2. We got it when I was pregnant with our second, kids are exactly 17 months apart and both in the 99th percentile. Its the best! I can miss our old single stroller (x-lander x-move I think) because that was a beast made for hiking trails. The bugaboo is more made for pavement but can still handle dirt roads with ease. Its very lightweight, no struggle with manoeuvring, I could take it with kids and groceries on the bus just a week ppm, fits through standard doors and reclining the seats isnt a struggle. Price was a big deal for us, a new bugaboo donkey costs more than our home does in a month. But we got ours second hand. It had been used for 3 kids and there are some cosmetic wear and tear on it and we couldn't care less. We paid about 20% off the full price, got two sitting seats, one bassinet and a side-bag for when you have it as a single. Its easy to find up for your car too.

We have a Bugaboo Donkey 5 and a Baby Jogger CMGT2! I never liked tandem strollers because to me, one kid’s always going to be in a weird position and I felt bad, and they felt super tipable. The bugaboo donkey slides in and out to make a single or double stroller and kids can parent face or world face. I get so many compliments on it when we’re out and my kids are super comfortable. This is our shopping/city stroller. My baby loves the bassinet too. The CMGT2 stroller is perfect for my older two in an outing with dad, who just climb in and out like at the zoo or parks. The bassinets are bulky but we mostly used car seats with an adaptor - we hired them to save some money and so we didn’t get stuck with them when we were done. We had them in the toddler seats from about 4/5 months. It packs up easily, it collapses to single mode if you have a baby that prefer being worn and one in the pram, it can be stacked up small for the car (I fit it easily in my small SUV and have gotten it in my mum’s Honda jazz without hassle). It fits through a standard doorway - pretty much anywhere a wheelchair can go we can which means I’ve never not been able to go somewhere (beyond the occasional overfilled shop). It is so easy to push and turn. We have 20 month olds who prefer to walk but we still take it most places because it’s not a hassle and we like having the option for them to sit. 10/10 would buy again

That depends. For us, in an urban area with great public transport and therefore no car, our stroller saw daily use, and we were hugely satisfied with our bugaboos which are super sturdy. We had a Buffalo and then a Donkey. Both stood up well to daily up and down a stoop, and were equally nice to push on snow and gravel as on pavement. I could easily push the Donkey with one had when there were two kids in it. Best investment for us has been the babyzen yoyo, which we still occasionally use, and our youngest is nearly four.

Also love my Bugaboo donkey. 11 mo and nearly 3 yo. Very tall children, so not sure if inline pram would fit the big one still. Can have them facing different directions so little one can see me and big one doesn't kick the pram wheels. Better handling in getting up and down gutters than the inline prams I tried (specifically looked at uppababy vista, don't remember other random friends pram I tried). Go to a shop and drive them before you buy! But then buy second hand or whatever online sale is cheapest/request a price match. I saw someone mention skateboard attachment: depending on age gap and temperaments, I did really like being able to trap the toddler in the pram for a sec without juggling the baby (example scenario - have to breastfeed while out, get crying baby out of pram, how do I get this cranky toddler into the pram or to not run away for 30 minutes while still holding a crying baby). Plus it limits your leg swing while walking if pram is your main exercise for a while.

Honesty, I wish I hadn’t bought one when I had my first. I never used it, I just baby carried! I ended up buying a second hand bugaboo donkey when we had our second, but my then 2.5 year old was in it 3 or 4 times before she demanded to walk everywhere, so I just used it as a single stroller (but rarely - I baby wore my second even more than my first.) It’s handy now with our third - the now 2.5 year old wants to walk but then when he gets tired he goes in, my 5 year old will go on the buggy board and I have the option of putting my 3 month old in his car seat on the other side of the stroller with the adaptors. (But again…. I babywear more lol) I would go second hand (not a beat up, wrecked one!) to save some money and also look into baby wearing. It’s a LIFE SAVER. For example, getting groceries - if you don’t want to put baby in a cart, babywear. If you have a 2 year old with you with your newborn, 2 year old in the cart and babywear. I found it so hard to get groceries with a stroller and their limited space underneath. Get a second hand stroller and a second hand baby carrier - r/babywearing is a great source of info for good carriers for different weights.

Its a wonderful stroller don’t get me wrong but….my now almost 3 year old who is on the tall side for his age, is too tall for it (his head hits the canopy.) We still use it but now mostly with my infant. Got the kickboard attachment thinking my toddler will love this but he prefers to ride in it so when I do have it, I babywear my infant. Then for travel when my toddler was really mobile we got the Bugaboo butterfly. LOVE this stroller!! So compact, tallest seat height, and easy to use. Then I had a second baby 2.5 years later. Now learning about the Bugaboo Donkey 5 and wish I had this to begin with. Love that it can be a single with a sidecar, or convert to a side by side double!!! It’s expensive AF and I can’t justify splurging on another luxury stroller at this time without selling my others and don’t want to go through that headache. My infant is only 5 months so I’m gonna wait this out a bit before deciding if I need a double stroller or a wagon. Leaning towards getting the Zoe twin if we need to when my infant is bigger. Or may need to babywear my second for far longer.

I’m looking at the donkey and have read that Bugaboo is just superior in most ways. Thank you!

Bugaboo is the best! The Butterfly is awesome for travel and the harness/crotch straps are way better than Uppababy in my opinion. For anyone looking, Bloomingdale's is running a really good gift card promo and when you stack that with Rakuten, you can get several of the Bugaboo stroller models for 40-50% off, better than used on FB Marketplace! If you are a new user and use my [referral link](http://www.rakuten.com/r/NCHENS?eeid=28187), you get additional $50 off your first purchase (I'll remove if not allowed!). Rakuten cashback gets approved within a few weeks and then deposited to your bank account. You have to use the Bloomingdale's gift card by 1/1/26 or else you forfeit 85% of the value, I usually just use on baby gear accessories (high chair, car seat) or something for myself :) [Bugaboo Donkey 5 mono complete](https://www.bloomingdales.com/shop/product/bugaboo-donkey-5-mono-complete-stroller?ID=5004168&CategoryID=3866&swatchColor=Black/Midnight%20Black) \- ends up being $907 (originally $1749) + tax for midnight black. Thread: "Prams - did you regret getting a larger, heavy pram for your first baby?"

Good intel! I can imagine the frustration of having to fork out for another big expensive pram. Thanks for the Kangaroo recommendation, I haven't looked into that model at all yet

Thread: "Do you regret your stroller? "

Yes! We got the Bugaboo Cameleon (3). So easy to manage, very smooth rides but just so big compared to other models. It basically doesn’t fold - one piece is the frame, and one piece is the seat, so it takes up most of my trunk space. I think I would have preferred to go with a Bugaboo Fox - but I bought during Covid, so it was a “buy what you can get” situation. Alternatively, the Bee would have worked well for us. We ended up using the Bugaboo Ant (now discontinued) as our daily driver - bought as a travel stroller (fits in the overhead bin), but super smooth and easy to drive. I have been thinking of switching to the Donkey (two seater) but the larger strollers are just so cumbersome compared to the city strollers.

Do what you want! I have the bugaboo donkey and egg pram. Both add up to 2.8k, it’s your money so spend it how you want. I personally think the ‘luxury’ prams are worth every penny.

Thread: "Stroller Advice - Nuna Demi Grow?"

The demi grow is only like 4” narrower than the donkey in duo mode. For car based lifestyles it really stinks to have to assemble/disassemble your stroller multiple times per day to fold/unfold in and out of the trunk. The donkey fold is a BEAST but at least it’s physically capable of folding in a single piece if you have the trunk space for it (as a nanny, I didn’t and I had to remove both seats and collapse it all the way to mono width to put in my own or the family’s car - fortunately we were city based and didn’t drive too often. Loved that stroller but despised having to drive anywhere with it). The demi grow will always require a seat to be removed to fold, and in double mode you give up a lot of basket space and the practical ability to use the more upright recline positions of the seats (especially with older toddlers with longer legs).

I have the vista and used it a bunch. If you’re a city dweller and plan to go everywhere with it maybe consider the Donkey or Mountain Buggy Duo but if you’re not walking everywhere with it it’s been great. I think under a 24m age gap the rumble seat is worth it with the vista. Plenty of room for kids and storage.
