Bugaboo Butterfly
The Bugaboo Butterfly is a lightweight travel stroller designed for children from 6 months to 50 pounds. It features a one-handed fold, compact design for easy storage, and compatibility with Bugaboo car seats.
Pros (+)
- Compact fold fits in airplane overhead compartments
- Easy to maneuver in tight spaces
- Lightweight design makes it travel-friendly
Cons (−)
- Fabric quality feels less durable compared to other models
- Higher price point may not suit all budgets
- Limited recline options for napping toddlers
Why parents like it
Parents praise the Bugaboo Butterfly for its compact fold and ability to fit in airplane overhead compartments. Many find it easy to maneuver in crowded spaces, making it ideal for travel.
Common complaints
Some parents feel the fabric quality is not as robust as other Bugaboo models, leading to concerns about durability. Additionally, a few mention that the price point feels steep for what is essentially a travel stroller.
Parents who need a compact, easy-to-carry stroller for travel or city outings. The tradeoff is that it may not feel as sturdy as pricier full-size models.
The Bugaboo Butterfly is great for parents who travel frequently, though its price and fabric quality may be drawbacks for some.

Thread: "Confused by strollers, what do you recommend?"
There’s definitely an overwhelming amount of options… You can definitely do a combo one that’s the car seat and stroller like the Doona. I think this is best for people who live in big cities or travel a lot. I personally don’t think they’re worth it.. you gotta buy a new car seat and stroller when they get bigger. You could get a bigger, travel system which is a good deal. Something like an UPPABaby vista or a mockingbird for a more budget friendly option with a car seat adapter is very nice. These also usually have options for a bassinet or an infant insert so you don’t always have to use the car seat! They’re very nice strollers with lots of storage, high weight limits, lots of accessories and can really last you a long time. The downside is they are pricey and often very heavy/take up a lot of trunk space! Another option is a travel stroller. Many people use these for every day!! There’s many options these days.. some top ones are the Zoe line, Buggaboo Butterfly, UPPAbaby Minu.. there’s many more. These sometimes can be used with a car seat, are often under 20 pounds, fold compactly, are great for toddlers, great for travel, more budget friendly! Downsides are often not best for infants unless it’s one with a car seat adapter, have less storage and not as many bells and whistles. So.. I chose 2. I went with the Mockingbird which is so nice and we love it. It’s great for babies with all the attachments. Worked with our Chico Key fit car seat and is a nice push! Adjustable handle bar was nice since my husband is a lot taller than me. But it’s really heavy for my small frame and took up my whole SUV trunk. So I also got the Zoe Tour. It’s also amazing!! It’s 13 pounds, folds flat, takes up a fraction of my trunk, great for travel and my toddler loves the snack tray and being able to sit fully upright. I keep that one in the trunk and the Mockingbird in the garage for walks. Lastly, check out The Stroller Mom on Instagram or YouTube! She does full videos comparing strollers and doing in-depth reviews of the most popular brands! That’s how I picked my two!! Good luck!

silver cross makes the jet/jet 3, which do fit in overhead bins and are aimed at travel like the yoyo or butterfly. but unlike nuna, they don’t really market the “non-toxic/greenguard” angle, fabrics are standard polyester/foam that meet safety regs, not the eco-focused stuff. if materials are a priority, nuna’s usually the pick, silver cross leans more on portability/build. there’s not a lot you need to keep in mind yourself tbh, [this post swears by](https://www.reddit.com/user/BarberUnited7894/comments/1pf2iva/midtier_vs_premium_stroller_wagons/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) baby trend and i’ve found it to be helpful. feel free to just use it as a checklist as well
Thread: "Is a pram necessary?"
As you’re in London, I’d have a look at something like the Babyzen yoyo or the bugaboo butterfly. I know you can get a newborn kit for the yoyo. I hired a yoyo from Baboodle for a recent holiday and it was great for city use and travel, but it would be useless for country walks (I live in the Surrey countryside). Maybe have a look at hiring something to see if you like it before buying one?
Thread: "My experience with the Bugaboo Butterfly pram on Jetstar"
Just want to chip in that even though OP had a positive experience, we’ve flown quite a bit with our 3yo and it varies WILDLY depending on the staff. None of them with any of the airlines we used were consistent with what was allowed or the rules and offerings at each airport. So go armed with your understanding of their policies and have them open as tabs on your browser so you can show the staff.
Thread: "Are double strollers worth it? What do you recommend?"
I’d probably get the ride along board attachment for the minu instead of a new double stroller. I have a vista that I got for my first and I loved it for just one kid but getting it in and out with two kids (5 months and almost 3) is a bit unwieldy unless my husband is around to help. It’s much easier to put my toddler in the bugaboo butterfly and wear the baby. I regularly wore my toddler until he was a little bit over 2 and expect to do the same with new baby. If you do decide to go for a new stroller try to get one with a one handed fold!
Thread: "What stroller do you have for everyday use and do you like it?"
You’re going to hear a wide range of recommendations, but you really need to specify if you’re going to be taking walks on sidewalks, or dirt, or if you live in a city, or have a small trunk. Also did you pick a car seat yet, because then you have to consider compatibility. Please specify and then people can give you advice tailored to your specific needs. For example, I live in a city so I love my bugaboo bee and bugaboo butterfly. I think the vista is crazy huge. But of course it’s a better stroller in other ways. Also, consider price range but I’d way rather have a used high end stroller than a new low end one.
Thread: "Thoughts on Graco Modes Travel System vs. UppaBaby Vista/Cruz?"
I live in Toronto and use the Cruz. It really is a great stroller- like Mercedes Benz level suspension. I’m not sure about the Graco but we have a graco swing and high chair and they are both really nice and well made but maybe have a bit dated looking designs even though they are new. I have no idea about their strollers. I am eyeing their 4 ever car seat. I will say that sometimes I wish I had gotten a high quality travel stroller. I really like the look of the new Bugaboo Butterfly but I know a lot of people who have used the more affordable Uppababy Minu with the mesa. I think we probably could have gotten by with a stroller like that for most months of the year. That said, I don’t really take it loutside in the snow and rain because I’m afraid of damaging my Uppababy… kind of ironic since I bought it to do exactly that! I would also add that uppababy’s customer service is unmatched! We had an issue with the car seat and I emailed them asking how to fix it (the bar was stuck) and they sent me a brand new upgraded one with the merino wool fabric. All they asked me to do is send a video and they sent a new one overnight rush. I was sooo impressed!
Thread: "Lightweight stroller options"
Depending on your needs - but I would put the Yoyo towards the bottom. The basket is kinda small and hard to access, and it is not a simple fold. People love the butterfly, and they just came out with a new model with some upgrades. That would be my pick!
Thread: "Stroller recommendations"
Bugaboo Kangaroo is far superior to the Uppababy. We have a Silver Cross Wave but if I were to go back and do it all over again I’d get a Bugaboo all the way. We do have the Bugaboo Butterfly as our travel stroller and use that way more (fits in overhead bin on airplane!)
Thread: "Bugaboo Butterfly"
It’s currently on sale at target + the extra 20% off trade in deal (poke around, you don’t actually need to trade anything in, just need to scan the barcode that’s floating around the interwebs), which gets it down to $320. Still a little pricey, but we get a lot more use out of our travel stroller than just travel. Quick errands, places with tight quarters where our daily monster stroller (Nuna mixx) would be too cumbersome, times when we need more space in the trunk, etc. We actually haven’t traveled with it yet! First trip is coming up later this month…
Thread: "Travel Stroller - Analysis Paralysis"
Just get a bugaboo butterfly. It’s great
Thread: "Strollers?"
We have so many strollers lol. Thule spring: affordable, adapter for most car seats, great ride. Good for travel too! Could be a great choice if you only want one. Bob jogger: amazing, rides like a champ, the only downside is that it’s huge and refilling the tires is annoying. Bugaboo butterfly: I cashed in gift cards for this and love it. It’s amazing for travel. Definitely not a necessity, but so nice. Uppababy vista: it’s so popular for a reason. This thing is a workhorse, fits in the car fairly well when you break it down, and is so adaptable. It’s expensive but soooo worth it.
Thread: "Prams - did you regret getting a larger, heavy pram for your first baby?"
I have a redsbaby nuvo but I have twins and so I needed a double pram from the get go. The nuvo is great and I really like it but if I was just having a singleton I would genuinely go for like a travel pram. The redsbaby skip 3 looks really good because it has an actual bassinet attachment as well as the regular seat. I've also heard good things about the bugaboo butterfly and dragonfly. If you're planning on a second baby in close succession to your first you might want a pram that can be a double though which might rule out a lot of the more compact prams.
Thread: "Travel Stroller Help!"
Butterfly has been great for us! We have traveled with it across the US, in Europe, and in Southeast Asia and it holds up everywhere we go. It fits in the overhead and one time we even put it under the seat in front of us on a US domestic Jet Blue flight because the overhead bins were those tiny ones a 1-2 jumper plane (although I will say the more you travel, the less you want your stroller with you in the cabin). We’ve used it on cobblestone streets in Europe and literally dragged it on beaches in California. It’s really narrow so navigates tight spaces well. We can also carry it - even now with our two yr old in it - when there are just a few stairs to navigate. It does occasionally get stuck on a lip, so you need to apply pressure on the handle as you are driving it (I say this bc our normal strolled is the Vista, and you can basically run that thing over a snowbank with a single finger it drives so easily). Also, recline has been fine for us. We traveled at 4 mos with my daughter and she napped in it fully reclined even though it wasn’t flat. Now that she’s two, recline is more than enough. She mostly sleeps in it sitting fully upright as we are walking around. Easy to close and open, but you have to get used to pushing the button and flicking the wrist to open. Also, tons of space underneath. We regularly put the pack n play and or a very large duffle bag underneath when we travel.
Thread: "Travel Stroller - Analysis Paralysis"
I would look for the Babyzen yoyo, Joolz Aer+ or the Bugaboo Butterfly on marketplace. You’re probably not going to get everything you’re wanting in a travel stroller, so you’ll have to compromise on something. Very few models will fit overhead on an airplane but the yo-yo and Aer+ definitely do if that’s important enough for you. Finding a big basket or a good recline will be the hardest.
Thread: "Affordable & easy travel stroller"
Honestly check Facebook marketplace. We got the Bugaboo travel stroller for like 100 dollars.
Thread: "Travel stroller recommendations"
We have the bugaboo butterfly and love it. It’s not a full full recline tho, but toddler still naps in it.
Thread: "Prams - did you regret getting a larger, heavy pram for your first baby?"
Completely agree. One kid so far, we got the uppa vista v2 and intend to use it when we might have another. I drive a golf and it takes up the whole boot. We only use the uppa for park walks/rougher terrain or big days out like at the zoo or for picnics now. For everything else, we use the bugaboo butterfly and I love it so much. The uppa was amazing for early days when you needed everything but the kitchen sink to get out of the house. Now we only need to bring a nappy and wipes, maybe a spare change of clothes we don’t need as much basket room, and it takes up so little space in the car, also so much easier to put in the boot.
Thread: "Parents who don't bring their full-size stroller to the airport: why?"
We have the GB Pockit+ All-City. I personally don’t recommend it (to rickety for the price, seat is too reclined and forces toddler to slouch). If I were to do it again I’d go for the Babyzen Yo-yo of the Bugaboo Butterfly.
Thread: "Choosing the best stroller, what do you wish you'd known earlier?"
We LOVE our bugaboo strollers (Fox 5 and butterfly). We’ve used others and remark on the difference every single time.
Thread: "Brooklyn Stroller Recommendation- Doona and Uppababy Vista?"
I live in Carroll Gardens and the bumpy sidewalks are a dream with the Vista. Many restaurants can accommodate the Vista with a heads up. My son is 4 months and just graduated from the Vista bassinet to the toddler seat, but any time we need to do a car with our stroller we just bring our car seat (Uppababy Aria) which clips onto the stroller, and can be installed baseless easily in the car. I haven’t done the subway yet with my stroller (or my baby for that matter) but with no elevator on the F that would be tricky with any stroller. We got the Bugaboo butterfly for when he’s a little bigger if we want something smaller.
Thread: "Travel Stroller recommendation"
All our WestJet and Air Canada flights in the last 2 years unfortunately no longer allow strollers in the overhead bins. All are required to be gate checked regardless of size. That being said, I love our Bugaboo Butterfly and highly recommend.
Thread: "Overwhelmed by strollers!!! Stroller questions for a city-living FTM"
Do you run *actual errands* with the stroller? Like, do you walk to the grocery store (+ carry all of your groceries home) or do you usually drive? If you are used to walking for errands, then you want the Uppababy Vista. The basket in the bottom can hold 2-3 very full bags of groceries. We live urban (Boston) and were car-free for a decade. Our stroller is our mini-van. We easily walk 5 miles in a day or more just living our lives. I kid you not, we have probably put 1000 miles on that stroller in 4 years. The Vista is built like a TANK, though, so if you're a casual stroller user (pretty much everyone that I know that lives in the suburbs), then it's probably overkill. For travel, we really love the Babyzen Yoyo. We also really liked the Bugaboo Butterfly, but it is really awkward to carry both the Butterfly and the baby for me. We got the Yoyo knowing that we would be going to London, and taking the Underground -- so I would be carrying the folded stroller + baby + backpack of stuff all alone to take escalators / stairs at certain stops. Other advice: We also were in a walk-up (5th floor) until our daughter was 2 y/o. I almost never used the stroller in the first 6 mo+...the carrier was considerably easier. If you're like us, then you won't really need any newborn stroller attachments anyway. Once they have head control at 6mo+, then you can just use seats designed for bigger kids.
Thread: "Bugaboo Butterfly 2 vs. Uppababy Minu V3"
If you have access to a Nordstrom I’d highly recommend trying them in person. They’re both great strollers but something might just speak to you for one over the other. My husband just liked how the handlebar on the Bugaboo felt so that was the tiebreaker! But there might be something different for you.
Thread: "Lightweight stroller options"
Bugaboo butterfly! Has a huge basket compared to the others, one handed fold, and feels so sturdy to push. I also had a yoyo for years and HATED it. It felt cheap, like it would blow over, the fold sucks, and the basket is tiny.
Thread: "What collapsible travel stroller do you recommend?"
Bugaboo Butterfly has worked great for us for 2 years now
Thread: "Should we buy bugaboo butterfly now?"
we waited for over a year and finally pulled the trigger on it with the sale and 20% stack. it’s a fantastic stroller to keep in the car because it has such a small footprint and is very well-made. also you can get car seat adapters for it if you have an infant seat, so you may get more use out of it than you think. the criticisms about being a rough ride on uneven terrain are 100% warranted though because of the wheel size, but if you’re planning on using it in stores and sidewalks, it’s a great buy at the price you’d get it for.
Thread: "Bugaboo Butterfly"
Just an FYI, saw a couple struggle to get a bugaboo butterfly to fit in the overhead on a flight to Florence a few weeks ago. Flight attendants asked if it was a Yoyo, bc they always fit. The couple had to go back and gate check the pram.
Thread: "My experience with the Bugaboo Butterfly pram on Jetstar"
We also love our Butterfly. Thank you for sharing your experience with travelling on Jetstar with it!
Thread: "Should we buy bugaboo butterfly now?"
I think bugaboo is increasing their price soon so I just purchased it in case this was affected
Thread: "What stroller do we recommend here? "
Really depends on your specific neighborhood and needs. We walk to everything within a mile, so a secondhand Bugaboo Fox was our choice and it was the best baby purchase looking back. I see a lot of people using the Bugaboo Butterfly as their main stroller around the city now but I still like the full-size for comfort and cargo space. You can always find secondhand high-end strollers on Craigslist that have lots of life left in them!
Thread: "Yoyo bassinet vs bugaboo dragonfly for nyc"
Yeah from what I’m reading I think we’ll probably go for the dragonfly and get the butterfly down the line. I love bugaboo! :) considering joolz aer+ too now! A friend has it and loves it! Doesn’t have the fold down bassinet though. Would love to get my hands on that!
Thread: "Joolz aer+ vs bugaboo butterfly "
Team Butterfly. Have travelled with it extensively and I treat all my gear like deep fried trash and it’s practically brand new looking. Only beef is that it is still slightly reclined when fully upright.
Thread: "Should we buy bugaboo butterfly now?"
Honestly, no. The target sale comes back 1-2 times per year, and you won’t need the stroller for about 1 year. If you have a registry at target, that 20% off coupon stacks with the 15% off registry completion discount. That’s the real deal. But either way, in today’s economy, I’d save the money until you really feel like you need the butterfly.
Thread: "What do I get with luxury/expensive strollers (uppababy, Nuna) over affordable ones (Chicco, Graco)"
Highly recommend the Bugaboo Butterfly for travel. Have one in addition to our vista and it's amazing. Folds up to fit in the overhead compartment.
Thread: "Cannot decide between Uppababy Vista & Nuna Triv travel systems"
If and when you have a second child, your needs and wants are going to be so different… So echoing on the second child using the Vista… It is made for two kiddos, even three but it is horrible to steer after 2, and the amount of attachments you’ll need!!!! The fold is going to be hard. Do not recommend any of the Mesa seats… very common to chest issue with the mesa. I have a Vista + Pipa Lite RX seat, and I also use the Pipa with my Bugaboo Fox and Butterfly.
Thread: "Are “luxury” strollers actually worth it?"
We have a bugaboo Fox and butterfly. Absolutely love them both. They are so smooth, feel nice, and just a dream with their ease of use. Not that this will speak much to the strollers, but we have a standard Graco extra car seat for traveling and it’s the worst, it’s clunky, uncomfortable, and not easy to use. I feel it’s worth the money for nicer baby gear.
Thread: "Stroller recommendations for one and done [on]"
Babyzen Yoyo with the from birth kit (bassinet), or Bugaboo Butterfly with the compatible infant car seat. I bought three high end strollers and should have just gone with the Butterfly from the beginning, would have saved myself $2000+. Don’t be me.
Thread: "Strollers - what did you wish you knew before you bought?"
If you are doing high end like UppaBaby, second hand is the way to go. We got one that was 9 years old for $50, replaced all the fabric to make it new, and it works perfectly and I don't care about walking it out in the rain and snow (city walkers). We also had a smaller travel stroller and started with Yoyo. Hated it. The wheels tremor if you walk too fast and there is 0 storage underneath. There are much better options now and we are happier with the Bugaboo butterfly. Similar size, weight, and much better storage. Almost all travel stroller lay kind of flat and don't sit upright which is frustrating for my kiddo who likes to sit upright. But the travel stroller is amazing for trips. Also agree with what others said. Think about how much you will really use it. In the city, the stroller is our car, it's how we get anywhere so under storage and size really matter for grocery shopping. My SIL in the suburbs splurged on a new UppaBaby and after 2 kids it's like brand new because they just don't use it.
Thread: "Anyone have the babyzen yoyo? Do you think it’s worth the splurge? And has anyone able to get it on sale?"
Bed bath beyond sometimes had 20% off gift cards which can be used to purchase it. Sometimes their 20% off coupons even works on the baby zen yoyo but it’s usually excluded. They also sometimes have the color sets in the store clearance section. That said, I got the bugaboo butterfly instead also through bed bath with discounted gift cards. The seat back is taller so will be able to be used longer than the yoyo. I didn’t like how yoyo parts were all sold separately so the price u pay is actually way more than just the frame price. Bugaboo butterfly is all in, it even comes with a rain shield. The only thing is bumper bar but it’s priced really reasonably at $35 and completely optional whether u have it or not. I didn’t like that the yoyo seat fabric/canopy must be purchased separately.
Thread: "Our Uppababy vista 2 arrived today. As a frugal and over-thinker, I am having second thoughts. "
It is huge. I hated it. Swapped it for a Bugaboo butterfly with Nuna car seat attachment and never looked back, and that thing has been a tank for us for 2 years. That said, the resale value is good.
Thread: "Travel Stroller - Analysis Paralysis"
I got the bugaboo butterfly and it does fit in the over head compartment EXCEPT if it is a smaller plane. Had to gate check it a few times but I also always take a carrier with me as well so it was not an issue traveling alone with baby and then toddler. It has a good recline and is lightweight. We rarely use our bigger graco stroller once we got the butterfly. It’s just easier to haul around.
Thread: "What do y’all think about the doona?"
Kids aren’t really supposed to be in the car seat outside of the car, especially when they’re littler due to the risk of positional asphyxiation. I’d get a nice travel stroller that will last you a lot longer that can fold up nicely. We have the bugaboo butterfly and adore it. The Yoyo and Minu are good and I believe both can have bassinet attachments also to use if you’re going on trips before kiddo can sit upright.
Thread: "What collapsible travel stroller do you recommend?"
Joolz Aer+ took it to France and a handful of domestic locations. Works great, very light. My favorite thing about it is how easy it is to fold it up and release. Also like the extra big canopy. Was between bugaboo and this one. People seem to be happy with both

At that price point I’d get an Ergobaby metro+. We have the Bugaboo butterfly and I love it, but I tried the metro too and it was great.
Thread: "Help me decide between the Bugaboo Butterfly and Uppababy Minu!"
I live in Brooklyn. We bought a stroller without bassinet and regretted it thinking we would keep him in the car seat. Car seats are NOT comfortable for babies. Luckily we were able to purchase a bassinet add on to our stroller. Also car seats are firm for protection. This could add to baby flat spot. Both of these are somethings to truly consider. Now if you truly like the Bugaboo go for it but maybe get a used Baby Zen Yo Yo with newborn setup. They’re in the bassinet for such a short amount of time and the Yo Yo is sooo compact. Hope this helps from a fellow FTM city mama ☺️
Thread: "Any parents using a Travel stroller for everyday use?"
We have the bugaboo butterfly as our main stroller with the Nuna car seat. I’m really glad we didn’t go with a bulky stroller. I’m petite and live in a small apartment. It’s so easy to get in an out of the car and we travel alot. We liked the kick stand, it had a bigger basket than most in this category and the longest pull down for shade coverage. We did opt for a doona for the first 18 months for travel but now my son is almost two and we bring this stroller. If you fly a lot.. it’s worth it. We got ours 2nd hand and used it just for travel. The downsides - the wheels are good for everyday but have trouble rolling over train tracks and really bumpy areas. I also wished I had a bassinet style / lay down feature in the early days and the ability to reverse towards you which the yoyo zen is better for. In the beginning, I used the car seats for shorter walks and but moved to upright sitting reallly early.. probably earlier than most babies. We also mostly did baby wearing in the beginning. The basket is smaller than regular strollers so you can’t pack the world in there but it fits enough.
Thread: "Good city strollers?"
Our daily driver with my six month old is a uppababy Cruz. There’s a reason that uppababy has the chokehold it does on DC, they’re amazing. At first I did struggle with the size/weight but as baby gets bigger and as our trips around the city get longer, I’ve really come to appreciate why it’s worth it. If space permits at all, though, it can be really nice to have something smaller/lighter for different situations - we keep a Chicco caddy in our car for short trips with the chicco car seat (we’ve also used that one for plane travel in the past) and we recently added a bugaboo butterfly for future trips that involve more walking. That said, if I could go back, I’d seriously look at the bugaboo dragonfly as a good marriage between a travel stroller and a full size. The fold is AMAZING. It was a bit out of my budget at the time (I got the uppababy on a Black Friday deal too good to pass up) but I keep trying it when I see it in stores because it’s just so good. European strollers in general seem to be a bit better tailored to the stairs-and-walking city life than the more car-oriented American market.
Thread: "Help me decide between the Bugaboo Butterfly and Uppababy Minu!"
Literally was just researching this yesterday. The Stroller Workshop reviewed both of these as being excellent travel strollers; however, they noted that the UppaBaby was more durable / sturdy overall and had better handling (due to its larger wheels), making it more appropriate if you intend to use it as your primary stroller or on slightly rougher terrain (like gravel or cobblestone). On the other hand, I believe the Butterfly folds up smaller and is more comfortable to carry, if you foresee needing to carry it often. The Minu is also quite questionable as carry on luggage… Though UppaBaby suggests it’s suited for it, and the Internet is full of stories of people doing it, I checked and it seems to be too large to be carry on luggage even on US domestic carriers (e.g., Southwest) that tend to allow for the larger-size carry ons. Not sure if I’d make that a priority when choosing a stroller though, especially in light of UppaBaby’s promise to replace a broken stroller if you use their travel bag. And if you’re intending for this to be a primary stroller, as opposed to one strictly for travel, I think the carry on thing matters even less. Other comparable strollers are the Joolz Aer+ and the BabyZen Yoyo2.

Butterfly is the best travel stroller out there!! It’s been all over the world with us and boarded every single flight with us. Buy it!! Also it’s held up sooo great through terrible Vietnam streets for months of use 😂👏 couldn’t recommend a baby product more!!
