I loved them and have never heard this. We did the anti colic set and I sized up the nipples when required. Loved them and will use for my next baby.

Seconded. The anti colic avent set was top tier for both my babies. They rejected almost everything else we tried.

Also the flow size increases the amount baby gets but won't change the mechanism of the nipple (the naturals still need to be sucked out). I recommend starting with the 0 or 1 flow and going up as baby seems ready (sucking extra hard, not having milk pool in the mouth).

You could always get one to try. Imo the wide version is better than the narrow verion, easier to fill and holds a bit more. I like the Avent Anti-colic with the green spoon insert thing.
