Skip Hop changing pad

The Skip Hop changing pad is a wipeable changing surface designed to fit on dressers or changing tables. It features a soft foam core and comes with a removable toy for distraction during diaper changes.

Pros (+)

  • Easy to clean, saving time on laundry
  • Affordable compared to premium brands
  • Includes a toy for distraction during changes

Cons (−)

  • Can be too firm for some babies
  • Size may be cumbersome for smaller spaces
  • Some babies may not like the material

Why parents like it

Parents praise its wipeable surface, which simplifies cleanup after messy changes. The affordability compared to other brands like Keekaroo is also frequently highlighted.

Common complaints

A notable concern is the firmness of the pad, with some parents wishing for a softer surface for their babies. Additionally, several parents mention that the size can be cumbersome for smaller spaces.

Best for

Parents looking for an affordable, easy-to-clean changing solution for their infants. The tradeoff is that it may not be the softest option available.

Bottom line

The Skip Hop changing pad is a practical, budget-friendly option, though some may find it too firm and large for their needs.

Thread: "What’s the point of a keekaroo changing pad if you need liners because it’s cold?"

I’m curious how people knew that their baby was crying because the changing pad was cold and now just because they are a baby getting a diaper change! I got the Skip Hop version (keekaroo knock off) and never used liners, the temp was never an issue for us and being wipable was crucial the first few months. My parents use liners on their changing table and it’s just annoying and one more poopy thing to dispose/clean. I never noticed baby cry less on that changing table than ours fwiw

You’re not missing anything. I have the ikea one and the skip hop plastic one that I got second hand. It’s hype and unnecessary. You’re a STM so you know the wipe-ability is what matters…why would anyone get a Moses basket? Otherwise - it’s marketing and aesthetics.

Thread: "What’s the point of a keekaroo changing pad if you need liners because it’s cold?"

For us, my daughter would cry everytime we put her on the skip hop wipe. Initially, we thought she just didn't like diaper changes but we started to notice she cried to being touched by cold hands and being cold in general. So I put down a puppy pad...and voila she loved diaper changes. We tried with and without several times and basically she cried every single time without the pad and only a handful of times with it. Even now, months later, it's the same.

I don't know how the prices have changed since I bought almost 3 years ago but I went for the skip hop one because I couldn't see how the keekaroo would be worth so much more money, and we've been a big fan of it in our house.

Same. I have the skip hop for my twin boys and since they pee on pretty much everything, I can’t imagine having one more thing to launder, fold and store. I only wish I had splurged on a wipeable pad with a scale. It would have been nice to be able to track their weight.

I got the skip hop knock off, love it just as much. The toy bar held a bookmark style lamp in the early days so we could see to change her. Honestly I never thought twice about the toxicity, this was a convenience over everything moderate choice for our family.

Solid wipeable in our house, specifically the skip hop one. We love it. Less laundry. We keep free and clear Clorox in the changing table for poop smear occurrences. We actually used pee pads for a while on top of the pad. (We reused them for our cats’ pine pellet litter boxes if baby got a spot of poop on them, so it wasn’t as wasteful as it otherwise would have been because we were always using the pads for that purpose anyways, so we only threw the ones she straight up peed on out).

My son is 21 months and he still fits on the Skip Hop. His legs hang off, but that’s not really a problem. Edit: just for info, he’s 34 inches and about 26 lbs. Somewhere around 60% percentile.

Thread: "Is a change table/changing pad on a dresser totally necessary?"

Like others I think a change table can save your back, but it also had a lot of other benefits. I use a dresser (made by my dad, designed together) with the skip hop wipe clean mat on top with a mobile. Not only is it nice to have a dedicated space for all the stuff (clothes, towels, diapers, wipes) so that everything is away and looks nice (no ugly pampers boxes taking up floor space), but it is also easy to keep clean and handle blowouts. Hamper right there. Trash right there. Plus, unexpected benefit. Baby really loves being high enough to see the room and I can stand there and we "chat" and play. It was the first place he laughed. I am not worried about the cat or dog stepping on him or getting their hair in his diaper. Easy height to inspect skin folds, clip nails, clean ears, look at gums. Medicine is right there. And everyone needs a dresser. This bad boy is an heirloom piece that he can give to his own grandkids. I am a buy it for life person so I would not have bought the Hemnes that is so popular. Then again my sister never ever had a change table. To each their own.

I liked being able to disinfect the pad really well, and have 0 absorbtion of fluids into the pad, and I wasn't in a position to store and dispose of things like puppy pads. I didn't buy the expensive keekaroo, but I did buy the skip hop one. I found the shape better as well, the peanut one made my nephew uncomfortable cause he was a chunky boi. I really just think the 'innovations" of high sides and wierd shape not worth the cost. I still have it, and plan to use it with my next. Average out the cost vs use and I don't think the skip hop is horrible.

Changing on the floor is tough on the back. I have a wipeable change pad on our dresser (bumbo) that we use for every change. I just bought the skip hop one for the nursery upstairs since our room is on the main floor. So now we have a station upstairs and downstairs haha

We have a changing pad (Skip Hop) on top of a dresser for upstairs. We recently got a changing table for downstairs. I much prefer the changing table on top of dresser. More space to organize stuff, more stable of a surface, and it can continue to be used long term as opposed to the changing table which will run out of use once #2 is potty trained.

We also use the skip hop; we did place a folded receiving blanket at the head of it so her head doesn't have to go directly on the pad, and she's generally clothed when we change her, and the swapping of the diapers is usually fairly quick, so that works pretty well for us.

I have never seen the Peanut in person to REALLY compare, but we went with the Skip Hop changer for the exact same reason, I had a hard time justifying the extra $50 and wanted to splurge on other items. I like the Skip Hop one, the soft grey goes well with our nursery colors and I think it’ll be functional as far as wiping off messes go. It comes with double sided 3-M tape to tape down to a dresser, but the material is ‘sticky’ enough that we didn’t use it. Also, if you don’t like the mobile, it detaches.

I put the kekaroo on my registry because my family wanted some bigger items to purchase for us. I didn’t have many expectations and now I absolutely love it. I honestly didn’t use it much in the newborn weeks (I just changed LO on the couch). Now that my baby is in his own room (10 weeks) I use his change table and change pad exclusively. Not only is it easy to wipe down, it feels so secure on the table and doesn’t slip at all because of the material. My friend is still using hers and her son is 2 1/2. I would 10/10 purchase again. We have a mobile above his change table, so the skip hop change pad looks awesome. He loves his mobile and stares at it endlessly when I’m changing him. These high quality change pads also have great resale value!

I am a STM. I did the normal diaper pad with my first and I HATE THEM. They warp and I had to replace mine 3 different times. This time around I bought a used Skip Hop Changing Pad on Facebook Marketplace for $25. Similar to Keekaroo. It’s regularly $60 brand new. I cleaned it really well and it’s pretty much brand new now. Had I gone with a Keekaroo or Skip Hop the first time I wouldn’t have had to buy a pad 3 times in addition to additional pad sheets due to stains I couldn’t get out. Plus the $25 for the pad i bought this time around. I spent more than had i bought one and done. Just me though, in my opinion it pays for itself.

The Skip Hop one *is* huge; I stopped using mine due to this. Bumkin has wet bags that I use to keep diapers in. [They have a strap & a zipper closure](https://a.co/d/35ZVndA). It'd be easy to keep one folded up in a pocket or keep travel wipes, diapers, & what-all kept in one in a diaper bag too. Out of curiosity, what diaper bag do you have? I have the Skip Hop Forma, but it too is huge. I'm thinking of downsizing.

Thread: "thoughts on using a changing table vs changing table alternatives?"

We tried our best to not buy things we could find at home to repurpose. For diaper changes we did buy a skiphop wipeable mat and plopped it on top of a bedside table which it fit on perfectly. Our 2nd option was the Hemnes dresser we bought for baby clothes but it was a little tall for me - im 5'4" so never used it to change her. For the first month sitting on the floor was not comfortable at all because of stitches. Also changing at night time is usually done in dim light so hard to do on the floor. The floor changes were best done after 3 months & almost necessary after 7 months when they turn into little wrestling alligators. If you don't want to buy any additional furniture, I will recommend getting a set of 3 waterproof changing mats and use them on your bed. I got the MBJerry ones from Amazon.
