Thread: "Can someone please talk me out of getting an onbuhimo?"

LMAO because I am here to scream about how much I love my onbuhimo. It's a stupid amount of money to spend on a baby carrier at 20+ lbs but good god, I love it. I have a Sakura bloom bc when I tried to talk myself out of buying the happy one, I posted on my but nothing group for one to have or borrow and OF COURSE someone lent me their Sakura bloom and OF COURSE I fell in love and had to buy one. 🫠 Honestly, if our house was on fire, I would grab it first, primarily bc there is no way I could deal with my house on fire without my toddler (22 months) contained in an onbuhimo 😂😂 Good news is they're around $100-$125 used... 😬😭

I love all my Sakura Bloom carriers. However, the onbuhimo is my least favorite out of the 3 styles. I feel like there was a very small window where it was comfortable with my son. Also, if you don't want to drop full price, there are a few BST groups on fb where you can get them nearly new and much cheaper.

Thread: "Do I need an Onbuhimo?"

I have a Sakura bloom onbuhimo, it’s great. I have a lot of other carriers including woven wraps, but the onbuhimo is the only one I use for back carries. It’s just so simple and easy. That being said, I don’t back carry that often, so I probably could have done without it.

You could look into Little Zen Ones try it before you buy it program (they should have Didymos and LL) or renting them (I think Joyful Baby Co is still closed for the summer, someone else may have a suggestion). Also, as far as I know, Mama & Roo is a distributor/reseller and they don’t have their own brand - it looks like most (if not all) of the onbubimos are Lenny Lamb. If you choose LL, you’d just have to weigh the cost of buying from Mama & Roo or Little Zen One vs LL direct (international shipping can be pricey). I have a Sakura Bloom linen onbuhimo from a sample sale and really like it, but don’t have anything to compare to! Edit: Loved & Loaned is another lending library.

I LOVE my SB Onbuhimo. I use ring slings daily with my 2 year old (and have since birth), so I love that the onbuhimo is a totally different type of carry. I find it's best for situations where I need my son out of the way, ha. I've used it around the house while cooking or doing laundry. There was a time babysitting fell through when I had planned to go to a huge rummage sale. My son stayed in the onbuhimo for almost 2 hours while I shopped in tight quarters, it was a miracle. I don't like it as much for situations where I want to interact with him, like the zoo. I love how easy it is to keep in my backpack, and it only took a week or so to get the hang of using it. I'd recommend getting a darker color, it's my dirtiest carrier somehow. Historically, SB has done an online Sample Sale near the end of July. It sells out really fast, but if you're willing to pull the trigger on the first onbuhimo you see when the page loads, then you could get a great deal! I got mine 20% off on Black Friday and had my husband give it to me for Christmas 😊

Thread: "Best carrier for dads??"

My husband likes the Sakura Bloom onbuhimo the best. It looks snazzy with his nice clothes, and it doesn’t have a waistband (he thinks waistbands are unflattering). Good for 6mo+

The Sakura Bloom Onbuhimo. I got it in 2019. Used for 2 kids. They’ve outgrown it now. Didn’t know it was worth anything.

I just got a linen onbu from them (Forest). I've used it a few times and I really like it. While I don't have personal experience, their customer service has a good reputation. As for the carrier itself the quality is nice. It works well for front or back carrying, but on the front it's quite high so baby is very much in your face. For reference, my kiddo is 9.5 months old and 20ish pounds. It's very supportive where it needs to be and when adjusted properly it's comfortable to wear. It's hard for me to wear for long periods right now because it requires a bit of upper body strength & stamina. The only downside is you have to wait until baby is sitting up to use the onbu with them. If you have another carrier for them then that shouldn't be an issue.

Thread: "Toddler Carrier vs Onbuhimo"

My kiddo is tall (90th percentile) and we switched to a toddler carrier at 18 months as his legs were hanging too far over the seat on our Tula FTG (and the panel was too short on his back). There's an awkward period where baby is a bit too tall for a baby sized carrier, but too short to be worn in a toddler carrier. Baby needs to be solidly wearing 2T pants to fit in most toddler sized carriers. I have a Sakura Bloom onbuhimo, and we're still using it now at 25 months. I like it, it's my main carrier for wearing out and about, but it's not my only carrier. You really can't front wear in a onbuhimo, it's super awkward and you're eye to eye with baby. I still regularly wear my kiddo and I do have a few toddler sized options as well as a standard size onbuhimo.

I have an onbuhimo from Soul Slings - I think it was ~$80. I love it! It’s very similar to the Sakura one. Great padding on the shoulders, we wear it frequently! Maybe check out their website if you are looking to save? It’s a great company.

Thread: "Is Artipoppe worth it?"

Other brands I would look into: Sakura Bloom (AMAZING fabrics, small batch, I own an onbuhimo from them and love it, their scouts are great too!!), Aloha and light (so pretty, hand dyed, and water rated!), and happy baby. See what other brands have. Unless you fall in love with one specific pattern, there are other options. Also personally, atripoppe has too bold of patterns, which is why I bought Sakura Bloom instead. But I would check out Facebook groups and buy second hand to try out or even find a baby wearing library near you to try out a carrier!

I have 2, and love them both. They’re easy to store, lightweight, and baby and I are comfy when using it. It does come with a little bit of a learning curve to use it, but once you get used to it, it’s a cinch. My only suggestion is maybe getting it in a color that hides dirt better. One of mine is a lighter color, and it’s a bit dirty. I haven’t done any research on how to clean it, but I assume it’s not as easy as throwing it in the washer.

Thread: "Summer baby carriers?"

If front facing is important to you all, you may like high back carries with a lark or onbuhimo. We love the sakura bloom onbuhimo, and the designs can be more mensware-like. Also we do lots of hip carries in a ring sling- less commonly seen on men, but my kid has no problem looking around in a hip carry.

Thread: "Do I need an Onbuhimo?"

I found Tula back carry awesome when my first bub was a little bigger, around 1 yr. I recently tried it with my 7 mo old and didn't like it as much. I haven't tried a higher end onbuhimo, I have a Lenny Lamb toddler onbuhimo I've used during pregnancy. It's fine, but it's not my preferred back carry. I've finally gotten my 7 mo old on my back using a meh dai (I also tie tibetan). It's really nice and supportive and I can get baby pretty high. Overall I have found the meh dai back carry still easier than the onbuhimo. Just my experience, it seems a lot of people really like the Happy Baby and Sakura Bloom onbuhimos. My babies have been really heavy and I like a more supportive carry with weight more distributed. I also think it's easier to tighten the meh dai and get a more customized fit.

Do you feel the same about the scout? Also, what groups do you see them cheaper?? I'm on the Sakura official BST And it seems like people sell even used ones for pretty much new retail cost

I have both the Soul Slings and Sakura Bloom onbuhimos. I much prefer the Sakura Bloom. I know people that like the Soul Slings better. Just like buckle carriers, onbuhimos are unique with their features, padding, buckles, etc. I would try anything on before buying one if possible. An onbuhimo can be a great carrier but you are only going to use it if it is comfortable for you.

Thread: "Trying to choose a Happy Baby Carrier"

i have the OG happy baby and a similar onbuhimo from Sakura Bloom. I prefer the OG with the waistband as I felt it allowed me a much better control on fit and just felt more secure to me (my baby napped in the carrier for like the first 6-8 months of her life). I actually preferred the sakura bloom scout to the happy baby original but i did still use the happy baby often. i just found it really hard to figure out the onbuhimo and i watched all the videos!! i just couldn’t get baby high enough and i didn’t feel comfortable getting her up on my back when we weren’t at home over the couch
