Solly wrap

The Solly Wrap is a lightweight, stretchy baby carrier designed for newborns and infants, allowing for hands-free carrying. It features a soft, breathable fabric that is easy to tie and adjust for a snug fit.

Pros (+)

  • Lightweight and breathable for comfort
  • Easy to tie with clear instructions
  • Soft fabric is gentle on newborn skin

Cons (−)

  • Can sag if not tied tightly enough
  • Some parents find it too stretchy
  • Less stable compared to structured carriers

Why parents like it

Parents praise the Solly Wrap for its lightweight and breathable material, making it comfortable for both them and their babies. Many appreciate the easy-to-follow instructions for tying the wrap, which helps them feel secure while carrying their little ones.

Common complaints

Some parents report that the wrap can sag over time, especially if not tied tightly enough. A few also mention that its stretchiness can make it feel less secure compared to other carriers.

Best for

Parents looking for a lightweight wrap for newborns that is easy to use. The tradeoff is that some may find it less secure than more structured carriers.

Bottom line

The Solly Wrap is a popular choice for newborns, but its stretchiness may not suit every parent's preference for stability.

Thread: "Fav baby carrier?"

I have tons of baby carriers, I love them all, but here’s how I’d rank my top 3: 1.) a soft stretchy wrap for the first few months. Solly wraps are nice if you have money to burn, but I went for the Weesprout dupe on Amazon for like $19 and it’s great. There’s a learning curve to this, but once you master it, you’re golden. This is how I ate and went to the bathroom in the early days. 2.) a good all-purpose carrier. We have the ergo 360 mesh and it’s ugly but a workhorse. Like, we carried our 16 pound 5 month old around Chicago all day and walked 15 miles, that’s how great it is. 3.) a sling is great for once they’re in a convertible car seat and not the baby carseat. It’s nice to pop them in and out as you go to/from the store/work/daycare/whatever. I have the Wildbird, and it’s totally fine.

Thread: "How did you choose a baby carrier/wrap?"

We put a cheap infantino on our registry and I got a Ktan secondhand for cheap, so I didn't put a lot of thought into choosing at first. Once I fell in love with baby wearing, then I read a lot, borrowed from friends, and then bought a bunch of carriers secondhand to try out. My recommendation would be to buy a basic stretchy wrap (Moby, Boba, Solly are all fine, I like buying used to help me narrow the options haha) and a basic structured carrier (ergo, Tula, lillebaby, or happy baby). You really can't go "wrong" with any of these, you'll get a feel for what you like or don't and then can go from there. If you don't end up liking the SSC, maybe you go woven wrap next. If you don't like the stretchy, maybe you explore a ring sling or meh dai. There's a lot of options, but it's hard to know until you've worn your baby and figured out what you like and don't like. My favorites have been the Ktan, ring sling, and standard Tula baby carrier. I also enjoyed a woven wrap, although I'm still a beginner.

Thread: "Solly Wrap - neck support?"

You have more fundamental problems than neck support here. There is a chance that your baby is big enough that you'd be best served by a more supportive woven wrap. Putting that aside, because even if you get a woven wrap you'll have the same fundamental problems, let's break this down. A stetchy wrap should fit like a fitted T shirt BEFORE you put baby inside of it. That means two things: 1) all the fabric should be laid out flat on your body, no twists or bunches. and 2) it should have only a little bit of slack in it, because once baby comes in, they'll pull it all down anyway. If you need to add more slack to get baby in, you can always do that by untying the knot and working in a little slack. Removing this much slack after baby is in is close to impossible. Baby should be in an M-position, not stretched out like this. All 3 passes (2 cross passes and the 1 horizontal pass) should stretch from knee-to-knee, and always cover as much of baby's back as possible. Baby should have >80% of their thighs and back covered in 2 to 3 layers of material. 3 layers is preferred. Try these directions [How to Use a Stretchy Wrap - Babywearing Educational Blog (wrappingrachel.com)](https://wrappingrachel.com/2015/12/15/the-complete-stretchy-wrap-resource/) Look how the cross passes lay on Rachel's back and shoulders, look at how much "slack" she leave for baby before loading them in.

Thread: "How did you choose a baby carrier/wrap?"

Id break it down into categories to make things more digestible Type, price, aesthetic are the ones I sort through. For newborn days I absolutely loved Solly Baby- my husband used it too. I loved how thin it was especially for those summertime hot days Consider what type of activities you’d want to be doing with them in. To start we only had the solly baby wrap and a soft structured carrier (happy baby OG) as she got older and I started realizing what I was using baby wearing for and her weight etc I started purchasing more- adventured to ring slings them mei dais and now onbuhimos. I always suggest starting with a soft wrap just bc it would for sure fit your newborn vs some carriers you cant get a safe newborn fit out of! I’d avoid baby bjorn as its notorious for not fitting in the proper deep M seat. Congratulations!

Thread: "Is Ergobaby really THAT bad?"

My baby was huge and is only just now fitting into her ergo 360 at 2 months. On the box for mine, the recommended weight minimum says 12lb. Until now, I've been using a sollywrap quite effectively. Especially when she was a fresh newborn, I've found it a lot easier to adjust to fit her Scrunched up shape.

Thread: "Solly Wrap - neck support?"

Definitely seems like your baby is reaching the practical limit of the Solly wrap. Even though it’s safety rated up to 25 lbs (I believe), most people find that it becomes uncomfortable around 12-15 lbs. If you like a wrap carrier the next obvious step would be to graduate to a woven wrap. Woven wraps are made from a more structured, less stretchy material and can be used will into toddlerhood. They are much more versatile and can be used for hip and back carries in addition to front carriers. There are also a lot of options in between woven wrap and a full on structured carrier like the Ergo Omni 360. [This article](https://www.littlezenone.com/pages/how-to-choose-a-baby-carrier) has a good overview of a lot of different types of carriers so you can get a sense of what might work best for you.

Thread: "Solly vs Boba vs …"

I would suggest trying a woven wrap simply because the use of a stretchy wrap is limited and it becomes uncomfortable as they get bigger. I have a Solly and a k'tan but I won't be able to use either for much longer. The key with SOlly is definitely to get it very tight before putting baby in, but it does stretch and droop a bit as baby gets heavier.

artipoppe is HUGE and bulky. I used a stretchy wrap for my sons first 3-4 months and then a ring sling and now we use a ring sling and a SSC. I HIGHLY recommend hope&plum for all of the above (I used a Solly wrap but for the next baby I want to try one of hope&plum’s stretchy wraps!) Edit: ring sling is a safe carry for newborns!

Our newborn (12 days old - 7.5lbs and 22”) meets the weight and length requirements yet still seems way too small for ours, we haven’t wanted to keep her in it for longer than a few minutes because she just shrinks down into the abyss of the carrier. We’re using our Solly Wrap (which she loves) in the meantime and hoping that she just needs to get a little bit bigger.

How tight is the wrap before you put the baby in? The Solly should be tight like a swimsuit before you baby goes in. If that doesn't do the trick I'd recommend a fit check. Switching to the boba probably won't solve your problem, it's going to be similar.

I thought I NEEDED a Wildbird while I was pregnant. That $228 Cosmos print was fervently calling my name. And then I found beautiful print on the LennyLight (magnolia, which is my daughter’s name) and snagged it - with droolpads - for $150 in a Facebook group. Everything about it is adjustable and it can fit infants from birth unlike the larger/less adjustable carriers. Ironically my baby screamed bloody murder the first time I tried to put her in it, so we’re still rocking a Wildbird ring sling or a Solly wrap LOL - I’ll try again when she outgrows the wrap

I never used a stretchy wrap with my first (was gifted a few but couldn’t figure it out at the time), but since my second was a preemie and much too small for my other carriers, I picked up a Solly secondhand and really like it! That said, I’m glad I didn’t buy it new, I’d rather use that extra $ to go towards a carrier I’ll use longer term since the stretchy wraps are only for a short time. Boba and Weesprout are more affordable options with slightly different fabric. I got the Solly for the same price as those are new, so I figured I’d try it out first.

Thread: "Is the ergobaby embrace worth it?"

I found it stopped being as comfortable around 15 lbs, so if you're already at 12, may not be worth it. might be more worthwhile if you're hoping to have another baby you could use it for. IDK what the length is on your solly wrap, but there's no reason a ring sling wouldn't fit a broad frame- if it's put on right, it will hug any frame. it is also, i found, an easier place to start learning than a wrap. understanding the rails and strand by strand tightening on that was easier than on a wrap, and then i was able to progress to wraps.

I loved my Solly and my Ergo Embrace! I think they’re both worth the hype. Both are very much newborn carriers - both companies advertise much higher weights than are actually comfortable. I remember being ready to move on from them by the time baby was 13-15 lb or so. Unsolicited advice - I watched lots of instructional videos and practiced. It’s not something you can just pick up and know how to use. (I mean maybe you could, but most people can’t.) A lot of people wrap them too loose and then they feel unsupportive. With any carrier, try to get a fit check before you decide it’s not for you! It could be an easy tweak.

Thread: "Solly Soft Carrier"

Yep, made in China. Solly also sold to private equity and is no longer truly woman owned(she has a majority share which is a minimum of 10%). It’s a fine carrier but misses the mark for the price point imo. I don’t think it’s poor quality, but I do worry the price will go up if and when tariffs actually go into effect and assumed it would be US made in line with the wraps at the price. I also think doing the inner tencel layer lends to less support than if it had another linen layer. Functionally, it wears very similarly to the lark but is less supportive and not what I would choose first at this point. I’m due in March with my fourth and may be equally inclined to grab it when baby can fit because I do think it will be nice for a smaller baby but won’t last to 2 depending on size

It depends on what you want to use them for, but my recommendation would be to get one that is more of a wrap and one that is more structured. The wrap is nice for baby carrying around the house or at events, and structured is nice for out and about in public or on walks/hikes. Its so much easier to use than a squishy pillow. It’s helpful if I’m holding him upright because homefry is HEAVY without the little shelf support. It’s like a tushbaby but multipurpose lol. 2. Tula free to grow carrier. Doesn’t make me hot like a boba wrap, and I can actually move around and do stuff unlike the solly wrap. He loves it, and it’s the only way he naps during the day. Idk what we would do without it. 3. Graco swing - we tried a bouncer and he wasn’t into it. The swing lets me get my coffee in the morning and sometimes even eat breakfast.

I intend to use a soft carrier (solly wrap) for the first bit of his life though, before switching to the more structured Tula. I’ve also tried on a friend’s ergobaby Omni 360 and baby bjorn and both felt good, although the baby had a preference for the baby bjorn (so something to bear in mind!). Facebook marketplace is great to try out carriers and maybe sell them if they don’t work for you! In terms of what to look out for, lumbar support is important to me because I hope to go on long walks with the baby and I don’t have the best back. Also think about whether you want your carrier to allow your baby to be world facing - some carriers have that feature while others don’t. I also know it’s a bit flippant but I did want a cute carrier!
