Thread: "Best wireless hands free breast pump to use when I return to work as a teacher?"

I have an elvie and it’s the only way I was able to make it 11 months of breastfeeding/ pumping as an icu nurse! It is definitely $$$ and I’ve heard some people say it didn’t work great for them. But I personally loved mine! Super quiet, pretty discreet, and no issues with leaking unless you bend way over with it in. While working, I’d sneak away to the conference room in the back of the unit, set up and put the pumps in. Some days I’d be able to sit there to pump the whole time; other days I had to run around, check on my patients, go to the desk to chart, etc. Only downfall besides the price is that I did have to pump for a bit longer to ensure I was empty vs with my other pumps (spectra and pumpables).

I’m team Pumpables Genie Advanced! - Super long battery life (can easily get 7-8 sessions out of it) - Small motor that can be clipped to pants or worn around neck with a lanyard - Can easily be hacked to use Spectra parts or collection cups of just about any brand, but I really like their liquid shield kit - Very strong suction - Programmable, so you can record a specific sequence that works for your body and pump on autopilot

LCs were totally useless for me when it came to pumping. It's insane that some of them actually spread misinformation and discourage pumping. Not to add more confusion to your research, but you could also go with a portable pump and collection cups. This isn't a true "wearable" situation, but you get all of the portability and they can be a bit stronger. In portables, I liked my elive stride, but wouldn't pay full price for it. I also had a pumpables genie advanced, but found it to be really heavy to carry around--about twice the size of the elive. The baby buddha is supposed to be a really good portable pump.

I know people say the Symphony is outrageously priced and not worth it, and I cannot imagine spending 2k on it….but I am renting it and it is fabulous. I don’t know how to explain it. I respond really well to it AND it’s so gentle on my nips! I’ve started using my insurance provided Spectra, and Pumpables Genie Advanced now that my supply is established. I like both pumps a ton, especially my Pumpables GA, but they are not gentle on my nipples. If I had used these when I was newly postpartum I think I would have been uncomfortable. (Also want to add “hospital grade” is apparently not regulated. So a ton of pumps call themselves hospital grade because they can have multiple users.)

If you want the same output as the Spectra, I suggest the Genie Advanced from Pumpables ($180). Otherwise, I hear the Imani i2 from Legendairy is a great one (on sale $111). Other affordable, decent pumps are the Momcozy S9 Pro ($120) and S12 Pro ($140). S9 is best for longer battery life, while the S12 is best for high efficiency pumping.

Thread: "Worth it to upgrade to the hospital-grade wearable pump?"

There isn't a wearable that's going to work as well as a plug-in pump in my opinion. Some people might just have really large capacity and wearables happen to work but for most it's just a supplemental pump, it doesn't even count as a main pump because it can't empty that well. That being said the pumpable's genie Advanced is my main pump and with their flanges and a pump strap you can have both hands to do stuff if you wanted it only in bra you could hack it with the legendary milk cups which I found empty decent. I also have an elvie, it's not very useful. Could also change your pump schedule where you do it while you commute, lunch break and try to bump sessions when you are home. To hit that 2 hours of pump time per day which is needed for some people to maintain supply but not everyone.

Backing up others on this thread to highly recommend Pumpables Genie Advanced. It’s totally revolutionized pumping for me and has nearly replaced my trusty Spectra 2. I go between spectra flanges (knock off Maymom ones in my correct size so I have less to wash) and Medela cups with inserts. I get *slightly* less output with the cups, but not significant enough to outweigh the convenience. I did a conference last week and pumped throughout the day with the cups and my PGA and was able to sit in sessions while pumping! Total game changer.

Another vote for Pumpables Genie Advanced! I’ve paired it with the Pumpables liquid flanges, Spectra flanges, and Legendairy milk cups - had success with all of them. OP, I don’t have a toddler but I am a surgeon and always on the go, and I find the Genie Advanced a perfect combo of function (empties efficiently like my Spectra) and portability. I have the Elvie as well, secondhand from another surgeon, which works okay but a little finicky and less efficient for me, but the tubing free aspect is nice. My colleagues and lactation consultants all despise the Momcozy (poor customer service, very hit or miss, many parts), but I haven’t tried it myself.

But if you’re looking for just one pump to be both effective and portable I’d highly recommend pumpables genie advanced! It’s not a wearable but it’s super portable and can be hacked into a semi wearable situation (kinda like the stride) if you use cups instead of traditional flanges - though not recommended to do before supply regulates I.e somewhere around 10-12 pp.

I feel the same way. I had to EP because LO had issues with breastfeeding. I made it to 7.5 months EPing but it was completely exhausting and emotionally draining. OP, if you are interested in trying to breastfeed, I recommend getting in touch with a lactation consultant. They are wonderfully helpful!! You might be able to have some meetings during pregnancy to prepare. There are also LC’s that can help with pumping. Bemybreastfriend on Instagram is a great resource for pumping. She is super encouraging for the EP-ing community! I used medela pump n style (don’t recommend for EP-ing), rented a medela symphony (amazing) and then bought a pumpables genie advanced (was also really happy with it). The down side to the Pumpables GA is the cost of shipping for consumables but you can hack the flanges so you don’t have to order replacements. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Thread: "Which are ur fave portable breast pump???"

I had a Spectra for my wall pump, the Pumpables Genie Advanced for my portable (used with the Spectra parts) and an Imani i2. The Spectra and PGA worked equally well for me, but the PGA was more tolerable because it was portable and I didn't feel so boob-cuffed to the wall. I consistently got about 20% less milk with the Imani wearable, but I think that was a function of the silicone backs on the cups rather than anything with the motors, because I got pieces that let me hook the cups up to my other pumps and got the same 20% reduction in milk. I also tried the Lacteck silicone flanges with my regular pumps and saw a similar reduction in output. (Some people respond better to soft flanges though!) If I were going to do it again, I would probably try the Baby Buddha, just because I hear a lot of good reviews and my body responded well to stronger suction. In the past, they had a reputation for having *really* strong suction, but I think the newer version has lower/more reasonable suction levels. If I wanted a true wearable, I wouldn't do the Imani again. It was a pain to clean and reassemble and (as noted) didn't work as well for me. I'd probably just hook the PGA or BB up to collection cups, probably the Spectra Cara Cups since my body otherwise responded well to Spectra equipment, but I'd also look at other options that are more boob shaped. I've also heard good reviews of the Elvie pump and the Willow Go. New Little Life on YouTube just put out a ton of review videos, so some of those might help you decide.

I've used the blue spectra, baby buddha original, pumpables genie advanced, and currently pregnant/getting the baby buddha 2.0 (so no actual feedback on that one yet). I've loved them all! Got the most milk out of my baby buddha quickly so hoping the 2.0 is an improvement on that long pull, I really loved the PGA though it was like a tiny version of the spectra really almost identical. I feel like I got slightly less milk with that one but it was still enough, the baby buddha original just put me a bit into over producer territory but nothing crazy. One big caveat though is that there are wearables with regular flanges (like spectra flanges) and then wearable collection cups (like the elvie stride). Anything with the collection cups should not be a primary pump, they just cannot get the milk out the same and almost everyone has supply issues if they try this route. The great thing about the baby buddha or the PGA is that you can use basically any flanges/cups with them, I used my spectra flanges/parts because that's what I was used to and I liked them. But you could totally do that most of the time and then purchase some collection cups like legendairy milk collection cups for example and use those occasionally when you need to be really mobile where people don't even see the cups, so it just gives you more options. Because either way you can walk around while pumping.

Eufy S1 is a game-changer wearable. It was absolutely the reason I was able to continue breastfeeding as long as I wanted! Set it and forget it pump settings/timer on the app, heat making it more comfortable and boosting output, reasonably easy to clean and assemble. Self charging case would have been nice but I got the S1 (without charging case) on a crazy Amazon sale. People love the Pumpables Genie Advanced but it didn’t work at all for me, just wasn’t strong enough I think.

I haven’t used a “hospital grade” pump personally but hear they are close in power to things like the spectra. Also note that the term “hospital grade” as it applies to personal pumps is not recognized by the FDA. Possibly helpful article https://aeroflowbreastpumps.com/blog/hospital-grade-breast-pumps-faq#:~:text=A%20hospital%2Dgrade%20breast%20pump%20is%20a%20rental%20breast%20pump,from%20properly%20breastfeeding%20their%20babies. I have 4 pumps - medela manual pump, spectra S2, momcozy s12 pros, and Pumpables Genie Advance. My manual pump is great, I think everyone should at least have one handy to help pumping for comfort when engorged from time to time. Also great for MOTN if you’re trying to quietly pump in bed. My Spectra kind of stressed me out at first so I wasn’t able to get much out until I got more comfortable. The momcozy wearables were great until my supply regulated. I haven’t been able to get more than an ounce or two per side in a while when my other pumps regularly get 3-5 oz per side. I just don’t respond well to the style or flange size anymore. But I know quite a few women who still prefer them. My PGA is a new favorite for portability and the silicone flange kit. Plus I can interchange parts with my spectra.

Depending on the day I get almost my same output give or take an oz. I do have to pump ~10-15 mins longer than I would with my primary pump. I tried the Momcozy M5 since everyone seems to love it, it just didn’t work for me. I was getting basically no output despite multiple tries and playing around with the settings. Loved how much lighter it was than the Willow Go, though! Wanted to like it! My favorite portable set up is my Pumpables Genie Advance with the Medela collection cups (I know they get a bad rep for the way the brand priced them, but I got them with my Amazon registry discount so $75). The consultant I talked with recommended the Genie Advanced over the SuperGenie. The SuperGenie’s additional settings weren’t important to me as much as the Genie Advanced’s portability was. I work and primarily pump. Genie Advanced has done a killer job. The shields that come with the pump, the liquid shield kit, are a really great place to start.
