If you’re exclusively bottle feeding, there’s not really a reason to use them - but even for supplementing breastmilk, we used a size 2 nipple. If you want to use the bottles you have, get some faster nipple (like 2 sizes up) and it’ll be fine. They’re designed to make them work (they have a y-shaped cut instead of a hole, so milk only comes out if they apply suction or kind of bite the nipple, which is why you’re perceiving it as so much more work. It is more work for them, and if they aren’t used to it, it’ll take them longer, too.

Switched from Philips Avent to Dr Browns. Our LO has done so much better for reflux & spitting up. Annoying all the parts but so worth it.

We have a Frankenstein set up Lansinoh bottle with MAM nipple OR Philips Avent bottle with MayMom collar and a MAM nipple

Thread: "Which bottle did your picky baby take to?"

She’ll take a bottle from dad but not from me. We have a Philips Avent bottle and nipples for the Haakaa pump container. No problems with either as long as dad is the only option for milk.

My EBF took to the Philips avent bottle really well. We trialed a lot of types and that was our only winner!

Thread: "Best bottles for combination breast and bottle feeding newborn?"

A nurse told me that “nipple confusion” is usually more of a “flow preference” (bottle milk flows faster so they prefer that to nipple). She recommended “paced feeding” with the bottle to counteract. Sent us this video tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuZXD1hIW8Q We’ve had to combo feed for some time and not had any issues with baby wanting to feed from /latching to the breast assuming milk was available. We use the Philips avent bottles with the nipples sized to his age, used 3mm for the past few weeks (baby is 6 weeks atm)

Thread: "Philips Avent VS Dr. Browns anti-colic bottles - what’s your preference? My baby will be bottle fed only as I have no breasts."

For your sanity, don’t use Dr. Browns. The endless parts and washing will drive you mad. We have used both and prefer the Philips Avent bottle as it does not leak and, of course, less parts to wash. The Dr. Brown’s do have a faster flow as well. Also, from what I’ve been told by my IBCLC and pediatrician the nipple sizes don’t necessarily have to be changed. My 10 month old has been using size 1 since birth and had no issues. We aren’t a glass bottle fam, so can’t speak for those but those are my experiences with the plastic bottles. Best wishes!

Thread: "Why do I need an engineering degree to stop Dr. Brown’s bottles from leaking?"

I never experience leaking but my LO somehow collapses the nipple, I’ll pull it out of his mouth and it’s all bent over on itself and has to reinflate lol I thought he was sucking too hard on them cause he needs a bigger flow so we put the size 2 on but it was just too fast and THAT leaked a lot, so we’re back to size 1. He’s only 5 weeks old today!
