Thread: "$$$ Baby Changing Mats. What's the Hype?"
You’re not missing anything. I have the ikea one and the skip hop plastic one that I got second hand. It’s hype and unnecessary. You’re a STM so you know the wipe-ability is what matters…why would anyone get a Moses basket? Otherwise - it’s marketing and aesthetics.
Thread: "Need some advice/reviews on baby change mats"
If you're in Victoria you will get a free travel change mat in the baby ("Dan Andrews") bag. It's actually a really good one and ours has been going for 2 years. We just use the IKEA one on top of drawers at home and it has been great.
Thread: "What’s the point of a keekaroo changing pad if you need liners because it’s cold?"
Just get the $25 Ikea changing pad and put a receiving blanket from the hospital on it. It's water proof and wipable and way cheaper.
Thread: "Keekaroo peanut ve. less expensive changing pad (e.g. Bumbo) vs. roll up travel pad/change baby wherever?"
We got the Ikea Sniglar changing table as a hand-me-down and it came with an inflatable thingy to put on top (I looked it up and I'm pretty sure it's [this one](https://www.ikea.com/se/sv/p/skoetsam-skoetbaedd-vit-50251798/)). Now we only use the changing table as storage and throw that inflatable mattress thingamajig everywhere for a change, since it's wipeable. In a pinch or when we're out, we use this [waterproof thingy](https://www.ikea.com/se/sv/p/len-skoetbaedd-prickar-gra-60453913/) (god damn what are these called in english?). The overside is soft, but the underside is waterproof so there's no leakage. Throw it in the laundry whenever needed.

Thread: "[bc] Anyone buy a cheaper diaper changing pad and WISH they went with the more expensive ones?"
I bought the giant changing pad from ikea (Vädra) and it is perfect especially now that he is older and rolling around. We just keep it on the floor when changing and it’s so easy to wipe
Thread: "Keekaroo peanut ve. less expensive changing pad (e.g. Bumbo) vs. roll up travel pad/change baby wherever?"
I just bought a $15 changing pad from Ikea 👍 You're literally just changing the diaper for like 2mins. Edit: It's wipeable & super easy to clean.
Thread: "Is a change table/changing pad on a dresser totally necessary?"
For our first we didn’t, and it killed our backs. We went out and got one of those dresser/changing table combo pieces they have at IKEA, and it has been worth it to us.
Thread: "Anyone have changing pad suggestions?"
Ikea makes one, it's called VADRA. I used that and no complaints.
Thread: "$$$ Baby Changing Mats. What's the Hype?"
I dont have an ikea one but one like it. 2 kids and thousands of changes later it has a couple of small tears but otherwise held up perfectly fine. I wonder if the peanut has resale value
Thread: "Changing table vs. changing pad on a dresser"
I like using the dresser. There's more room, plus it's useful after you don't need a changer. This time we have an Ikea dresser with a glass top and the keekaroo barely moves a bit when I mess with it. Before that, we had an off brand changing pad and just put that dollar store shelf liner stuff underneath which kept it from sliding.
Thread: "What are your favorite tabletop changers / change pads? [on]"
Yes, I use the Ikea one without adding the Fabric liner on it. Just directly on the "plastic pad" so I can wipe it instead of having more laundry.
Thread: "Is a change table/changing pad on a dresser totally necessary?"
Maybe you’ll be fine doing nappy changes on the ground. And maybe you’ll go absolutely insane getting up and down all the time, especially when there’s a superfund site type cleanup required. Give the floor a go. Secondhand Ikea changing tables are cheap if one is ever needed.
Thread: "[bc] Anyone buy a cheaper diaper changing pad and WISH they went with the more expensive ones?"
I regret spending so much on mine (jool baby) it cost the same as the skip hop but the size is narrower which I needed for my dressing table. though that was unnecessary as I strictly change my baby on it on the floor or just the bed with an ikea change pad under😂 it is nice that it’s wipeable though but I didnt need to splurge on it I’d say
Thread: "Is there enough of a difference between the peanut and Skip Hop changer to justify the cost?"
I struggled with this decision for a solid month. Then ended up buying an inflatable one for $6 from ikea. Simple, portable, wipeable...just not as aesthetically pleasing.
Thread: "Is a change table/changing pad on a dresser totally necessary?"
Diaper changes for us became a wrestling match. We used the dresser one for a while ( like months) and I would say it was worth it - just for saving your back if nothing else. Once they get much more mobile and don't want to stay still it becomes safer on the ground. But you can just move the pad to the ground anyways. I'd say they're worth it and usable for enough time to get your money's worth. We just put a pad on an Ikea dresser at first. If you're already doing a dresser for their clothes it's just the cost of the pad and covers then.
Thread: "Is a change table/changing pad on a dresser totally necessary?"
We are too old to get down on the ground to change the baby (now 12 month old) 5-8 times a day lol. We use an Ikea kallax 8x2 shelf on its side with a pad on top. Much easier on the back, especially since she's over 20lbs now!
Thread: "Is a change table/changing pad on a dresser totally necessary?"
I love my changing table, i got a really cheap one from ikea, it really saves your back from the constant bending over. Initially i made a changing station on top of the washing machine but once baby started rolling over it became risky
Thread: "Is a change table/changing pad on a dresser totally necessary?"
I have a cheap changing table from IKEA because we don’t have a dresser that would fit a mat on top. It’s in the bathroom with a wipeable mat and proximity to the sink, both of which I love for messy changes. But half of all changes, especially nighttime, are still on the floor/couch/bed. My mom and I actually had the opposite conversation once. I was coming to stay with her and she prepared a room for baby and I, but a change table wasn’t on her radar because she always changed me on the floor.
Thread: "Help with buying a baby changing mat?"
I got the IKEA one (the thicker one) for the changing table and a thinner one from John Lewis if I ever need to put one on the floor.
Thread: "Need some advice/reviews on baby change mats"
We bought the IKEA one (it’s grey with cream polka dots). We have multiple because I change on the floor but it’s awesome because it’s waterproof. I fold it up and shove it in the nappy bag, pram caddy, and around the house. As soon as they get dirty I throw them in the wash. I really wanted the expensive silicone ones, but we ended up always changing on the bed upstairs or on the floor, so we’d just lay the IKEA mat down. Zero regrets.
Thread: "Is a change table/changing pad on a dresser totally necessary?"
We just stuck a changing mat on a chest of drawers we had already from IKEA. It's the perfect height and has become our girls draws. The two draws at the top have her wipes, creams and nappies in. The two big draws have all her clothes. You don't need a specific changing table but if you have something around that you can use your back will thank you for it. Getting up off the floor is a killer the first few weeks and running about looking for nappies and wipes. It's handy to have it all in one place as you'll be changing nappies around 10-12 times a day.
Thread: "$$$ Baby Changing Mats. What's the Hype?"
I have the keekaroo and we like it. We also had one similar to the ikea one that we got as a hand-me-down and we had the keekaroo upstairs and the ikea-esque one downstairs. My only comment is that I was given cloth covers to use with the ikea-esque one and it never occurred to me to use it without them. I see they also sell covers for the valda. Using the fabric covers was super annoying because they had to be constantly laundered. Anyway - I think that’s what people mean when they say the keekaroo or similar is easy to clean. Because it is not marketed to be used with cloth covers. But at the end of the day, there is nothing magic about the keekaroo. It lasts a long time so you can sell it when you’re done. I think that’s how most of the most expensive baby stuff justifies the cost. If you can sell your Uppababy Vista for 70% of retail when you’re done, why not enjoy the fancy stroller (assuming you can afford it upfront of course).
Thread: "Portable diaper changing pad / clutch"
I've not used it, but what about the Munchkin Designer Diaper Change Kit? It seems a bit smaller than the skip hop one Other suggestion, though, is I use a receiving blanket on changing tables or a disposable puppy pad if I'm worried about getting fluids on something, which might roll up smaller than an actual changing pad. I also often use a little packing cube to put a few baby things in, which might fit better in a bigger diaper bag, especially if you get a thin fabric one which you can roll up to stick in the bag until you need it. I use the Rensare 3 pack clothes bags from Ikea, which are real flimsy fabric that you can get very compact when not in use so they don't take up very much space
Thread: "What’s the point of a keekaroo changing pad if you need liners because it’s cold?"
We’ve been using our IKEA changing pad with the IKEA sheets that go over it successfully for over 2.5 years now. The covers are super cheap but you can use any cloth over it, as others mentioned here. It could have been used without one also. We had a January baby but the temp in our house didn’t dramatically go down to the point where the mattress actually got cold.
Thread: "Diaper changing pads"
We just have a cheap safety first one, I think? But we use a cotton cover on it. It doesn't slide around too much to be annoying on our Ikea hemnes dressers. It does have buckles to strap it down but we never installed it like you're supposed to. It just sits there.
Thread: "Which one of these changing pads is best?"
I don't know between the ones you've posted here but we got the IKEA one (it's waterproof so you could use it without a cover) with some generic cotton covers that we wash with the baby laundry once or twice a week or whenever they get dirty. Get some covers in black or poop colour so you don't have to spend time removing the stain haha. Cheap and good enough!
Thread: "Is a change table/changing pad on a dresser totally necessary?"
If it’s your first or you anticipate a c section it makes things super easy. Personally I change mine on the couch, bed, or a blanket on the floor. It’s all about personally choice and what you think would be easier. You can also just get a changing pad that has the upward slopes and set it on top of a dresser Ikea sells a 30$ changing table
Thread: "Help with buying a baby changing mat?"
This is exactly what I have bought now. Once the baby was rolling we stopped using the IKEA one on the changing table but the changing table was a godsend for months and saved my back.
Thread: "Is a changing pad worth it?"
We exclusively change our baby on a changing pad. We have a Keekaroo on his dresser in his room, and then a cheap Ikea changing table downstairs. I don’t get the changing on bed/couch thing. It hurts my back when we have to wrangle him into a diaper on our bed after a bath, and I love that I have all his diapering essentials on the dresser with his changing pad. Also bonus that it can be wiped down easily!
Thread: "$$$ Baby Changing Mats. What's the Hype?"
The peanut was 100% worth it for us. It’s made in the US, the materials are safe and it’s actually really soft instead of a hard plastic. I can tell we’ll be using it for years to come with our first and with future kids. It fit on our IKEA dresser perfectly so we didn’t have to get a separate changing table that wouldn’t be able to transition to a general dresser as she got older. You also don’t have to worry about getting changing pad covers (another expense and more laundry) and it’s very easy to clean. Obviously super rare, but my daughter caught infantile botulism so her feces has botulism in it and can get us sick. Because we already had the peanut, we’re able to clean it up and prevent the spread of a dangerous illness. If we would have had a changing pad with covers we would have had to go buy a whole new system for safety when she got home from the hospital.
Thread: "It seems like a bunch of people have those wipe-clean foam changing pads now. What’re you putting on them in the wintertime so your baby does not recoil in screaming horror from the cold surface?"
I have a Len change pad from ikea. It’s like a big square that has a thin piece of fabric and plastic on the back. Pretty comfortable and leak proof. I wish I bought like 5 because she always pees on it when we do nakey time for her diaper rash. I throw it in the washer and dryer.
Thread: "No changing table, no dresser, worried about messy diaper change."
We use the Ikea changing pad on the floor. It was around $15 or something? Not that expensive. We were originally using a changing table without a pad (just a towel) and my son would FLIP OUT every time we changed him. As soon as we got the IKEA one he was totally chill.
Thread: "What are your favorite tabletop changers / change pads? [on]"
Same. We use the inflatable one and lay old towels on top for easy change if there's an unexpected geyser or something.
Thread: "What’s the point of a keekaroo changing pad if you need liners because it’s cold?"
I honestly just got the ikea change pad and a few liners online. Easy to change and wash, seeing you are already doing 10000 loads of laundry a day.
Thread: "Best changing pads, bassinets, and bouncers"
I agree with a lot of people here! Changing pad: Naturepedic pad is standard size, nontoxic, and can be wiped down. You can often find a 20% off coupon. I found 100% organic cotton covers on Amazon. Bassinet: The guava lotus is great because it is Greengold Certified, and converts into a pack and play, which you will use for many years! Bouncer: Baby Bjorn. Everyone loves this thing. Play Set: Everyone recommends the Lovevery, which is great, but I went for a cheaper version on Amazon (Comfy Cubs) and purchased a quilt to put on top of my rug, and it's been perfect. They have lots of options on Etsy for solid wood play sets, too. Toys: Bannor Toys, Bella Luna, Haba toys Crib: The Ikea Sniglar is a very affordable option!! Crib mattress: Naturepedic again, we do love the brand :)
Thread: "[bc] Anyone buy a cheaper diaper changing pad and WISH they went with the more expensive ones?"
I also got the ikea one, not sure if it's the same one as yours since there are 2, different sizes. I think both called vädra.... it made sense since I was putting it on top of an ikea dresser. Size was perfect. It was nicely padded and wipe out nicely. I feel it's more comfy than my friend's skip hop due to the cushioning. It's so cheap I got 2... one for another floor that we take out if we're nearby so we don't have to run up and down the stairs to change. It's been a few months still in perfect shape. But if it falls apart for whatever reason I wouldn't be upset to spend another $20 and replace it.
Thread: "Need some advice/reviews on baby change mats"
For home we have the Vadra mat from Ikea. I think they’re great! We have one for the living room, one for bub’s room and one for my parents’ place. Cheap, simple, big, easy to wipe down. Put it on a table or on the floor. For out and about I just use the one from the NSW baby bag, does the job.
Thread: "Keekaroo peanut ve. less expensive changing pad (e.g. Bumbo) vs. roll up travel pad/change baby wherever?"
Oh so glad you posted these! We just returned the $100 Skip Hop change pad because I saw the IKEA change pad and mat that you posted, and I thought we’d get more use from them due to portability. The skip hop and keekaroo versions weigh 5+lbs!
Thread: "Changing Pad Recommendations Please"
We use the Vadra changing pad from IKEA. It’s $25. It has a soft plastic cover that can be wiped down.
Thread: "Is it just me or is the keekaroo peanut changing pad disgustingly overpriced?"
A lot of baby products are at best predatory to anxious parents and at worst actually dangerous. $150 for something that’s gonna get pooped on feels nuts unless it has some super special cleaning function or something. I got the £10 one from Ikea. You can get sheets for it, it’s plastic and foam so you can wipe it down. I love it and it does its job.
Thread: "Is Keekaroo peanut changer worth it?"
Not in my opinion. I hemmed and hawed over similar "wipeable" changing pads, but I ended up getting a cheap foam core on with inflatable bumpers from Ikea as a"temporary" pad and I honestly love it. It's light enough I can pick it up with one hand if I want to move it. Sometimes I put it in the bathroom as a soft place to rest the baby on their towel. The plastic ones would be so cold for LO, any pee mess would create a puddle on them soaking everything. The covers for the Ikea one are terry cloth. Super easy to change them and wash them with regular baby laundry and they are absorbent in the event of a rare accident. I don't see the value in those molded foam type ones at all anymore. Glad I didn't waste the $100. If you really want one of those molded foam types Little Tikes makes one that's cheaper! Edit: Cheap Ikea one I ended up loving: https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/skoetsam-babycare-mat-white-70251797/ Comparable molded foam little tikes one: https://www.amazon.com/Little-Tikes-Diaper-Changing-Travel/dp/B07QCD5CWN Edit2: By 6 months old you'll be changing them on a towel on your livingroom floor anyway.
Thread: "Baby change tables vs change mat on chest of drawers.."
This is the setup I have and it works great so far with our 1 mo old. We got a keekaroo on fb marketplace and put it on an ikea Hemnes 3-drawer dresser that used to be in our bedroom (we replaced our bedroom furniture around the time we got pregnant). The keekaroo is wipeable but we usually put a receiving blanket on top of it to help make cleanup easier if there’s a blowout or pee fountain (even with a girl it can end up everywhere). The drawers store all of her clothes and we usually change her here too (second drawer) and diapers/wipes/changing supplies (first drawer). We have a small house and her room is on the main floor where we spend most of our time, so this works best for our setup. In the basement we have a basket of diaper changing supplies and a foldable mat that we just put on the coffee table.

Our Hemnes is still going strong 6.5 years and 2 kids later, if that helps sway you!

It’s got a plastic wipe able layer. From my experience most are wipeeble, including the five dollar ikea one. When I’m not chasing around my toddler I can send some links. I have never had to do more than spray down with Lysol.

Thread: "Is a change table/changing pad on a dresser totally necessary?"
We have a changing station (actually we have two — an IKEA table in the nursery, and a “pad on a dresser” downstairs. I really like having everything set up and ready to go with wipes, diapers, rags, ointment in the same place every time and easy to keep stocked so I’m not fumbling with packaging while holding a baby. I also like not having to bend down or get in a weird position to change, but I’m a 40+ first time dad, so that may matter more to me than to someone younger. Work smarter, not harder!
Thread: "[bc] Anyone buy a cheaper diaper changing pad and WISH they went with the more expensive ones?"
Yes I got the giant one that is like a big square I think it was like $32. We also were gifted another brand name changing pad for the top of our change table upstairs and honestly I can’t recall the last time we used that one lol. We just use the giant ikea one now because it’s so easy to clean and our boy is an ACTIVE baby that it’s just easier to change him on a bigger size then try to wrestle him lol.
