Happy Baby Happy Onbuhimo

The Happy Baby Happy Onbuhimo is a back-carry baby carrier designed for older infants and toddlers, allowing parents to carry their child comfortably without a waist belt. It features a high back design and is made from durable fabric, making it suitable for everyday use.

Pros (+)

  • Easy to put on and take off, perfect for quick outings
  • Comfortable for back carrying toddlers
  • Durable fabric that holds up over time

Cons (−)

  • Sits low on the back, causing discomfort for some
  • Straps can be difficult to adjust for a proper fit
  • Not suitable for younger infants who can't sit up

Why parents like it

Parents praise the Onbuhimo for its quick and easy setup, making it ideal for active toddlers. The high back design allows for a comfortable carry, especially for longer outings.

Common complaints

Some parents find the carrier sits too low on their back, leading to discomfort during use. A few also mention that adjusting the straps can be challenging, impacting the overall fit.

Best for

Parents who want a simple, effective way to carry their toddler on their back. The tradeoff is that it may not provide the same level of support as carriers with waist belts.

Bottom line

The Onbuhimo is a great option for parents looking for a comfortable back carrier, though some may struggle with fit adjustments.

Thread: "Can someone please talk me out of getting an onbuhimo?"

I have a Tula ‘free to grow’ that I’ve been front wearing my ~20lb kiddo in, but that was too uncomfortable to back carry in due to some lingering nerve damage. I bought an onbuhimo for back carry and I absolutely love it. It’s a much better back carry vantage point for LO and it looks so much better from the front (no waistband with fat spilling over the edges). 10/10, would recommend. I still use my Tula for front carrying, this hasn’t totally replaced it, but I can actually do dishes and hand wash bottles now if needed.

Same I can’t! I love my onbuhimo. It’s basically the only carrier my husband and I use anymore. Just be aware when you inevitably do get one, it uses totally different muscles so your upper back will be sore the first few times. I adjusted very quickly though and now can barely feel my 30ish lb toddler.

Does it count if I try to talk you out of *buying* an onbuhimo and into *making* one instead? It is sooooo much cheaper and the hardest part is the x boxes and there are lots of instructions online for them.

I have two kids now, 5 and 2, and the onbuhimo and the woven wraps are the ones that stood the test of time. No regrets.

what made putting my onbuhimo on quickly was basically sitting them on a surface (usually the trunk of my car lol), placing them on top of the carrier and threading their legs through, then quickly turning around and leaning back to put my arms through the straps and hoist them on like a backpack. i was able to keep one hand on them so they wouldn’t fall and it was so much faster and less stressful for me than a superman toss. then when they were on i’d lean forward and check the seat, straps and fasten the chest belt.

Thread: "What's the big deal with the Happy Baby Carrier?"

Honestly, it’s easy to use and easy to wear. It straddles the fine line of being comfortable but also lightweight, which is pretty hard to come by in baby carriers (often, you’re choosing between wearing a super supportive carrier that feels like baby Kevlar or a super lightweight carrier that hurts to wear for extended periods of time). Packs up small in a diaper bag too, so it’s convenient to bring on the go for quick ups. I’m a big fan of the HBC onbuhimo, used it for two kids and about to break it out again for my third.

Thread: "Do I need an Onbuhimo?"

I feel like HBC have helped create all that hype, and Sakura bloom bc of that bohemian look and such, but I've always heard great things. Some ppl love do them or hate them, bc of the learning curve and fit. You do need to find that sweet spot, where they're over your shoulder and weightless. Chances are if you're used to a ruck you may not get too much of that pain. When I first used mine i did for 2 hrs on and off and man, i was sore. But afterwards i got used and could wear for hours. They are the bomb I find it easier to get babe in an onbuhimo than a woven wrap 😅 specially with them seat poppers I do love a good ruck tho, but living in Florida the woven wraps can get super hot. and my second was a master at popping seats. The Onbuhimos i use are water friendly and they are perfect Considering it's just a square of fabric and a couple of straps they can be different across brands and style. I use Naked Panda Designs and they have 2 types, one of which has PFAs like SCCs do that give a lot of versatility to the user. And they have one that is straight up fabric and it's cheaper but i still prefer the other more pricy one. From other ppl that have used them they prefer them over other brands in the market Look into [joyful baby co](https://nakedpandadesigns.com/) they rent carriers our and it's worth a try before an investment

Have you tried an onbuhimo? When that happened to us, we switched to an onbuhimo and he was OBSESSED. Like would bring it to me in the kitchen so I could wear him while I cooked.

Thread: "Please tell me about your happy baby carrier vs a lillebaby type"

I have really liked our happy baby carrier (and my husband loved their onbuhimo), and didn't have trouble buying one from the site so long as I was flexible about color and fine with not having the hot new color that was just released. The one thing I would buy differently was that I originally got a cotton/linen blend one, and I didn't like the texture as much as the full linen (others report the opposite, though, so ymmv). We also had a Lillebaby all seasons, which I had thought I would use more for longer walks and also for forward facing, but my baby hated forward facing and also seemed to get too hot and sweaty in the lillebaby, which wasn't an issue with the linen carrier, so we never used the lillebaby much. This might have been different with a different model with better ventilation, but I think at least some of the issue was the scratchiness of the nylon mesh.

Thread: "Opinions about onbuhimo carriers?"

I love our onbuhimo from Happy Baby. It took some practice and time to build up the muscles and tolerance but can now carry our 30 pound two year old with no problem for an hour or two. We started when he was about a year old for ten to fifteen minutes each time until it was no longer uncomfortable.

Thread: "Toddler Carrier vs Onbuhimo"

If you want to keep wearing your toddler you will eventually likely need a different carrier because the back panels in baby size carriers will end up being too short for safety. This seems to happen more quickly than kids hitting the max eeight. Your ring sling will more likely keep fitting, and depending on the type and length of ring sling you may be able to set up some kinds of back carries, but even if so you may want something else too. An onbuhimo can be really great for a toddler, especially as they want to walk more - it's really quick and easy to get on and off once your kiddo can help climb into the straps. It's not the comfiest for long carries - I had my 31 lb 2.5 year old up for about 2 hours yesterday watching a parade (and walking to and from) and it got a little uncomfortable. And I haven't tried it for front carry but it seems like it wouldn't work well. I'm glad I still have a woven wrap and meh dai for front carries and comfier longer back carries (in retrospect I should have gone for one of these options yesterday but we were running late). But the onbuhimo great for quick on and off and for not dragging on the ground when putting on and taking off. I got it close to my kiddo's second birthday after traveling with the meh dai and getting tired of wrangling the straps in dirty public areas. It quickly became my go-to for our quick daily lunchtime dog walks.

Thread: "Onbuhimo vs meh dai for high back carry"

I have both and I like both! The onbuhimo is quicker and easier, but I find the meh dai more secure. I tie the "waist strap" on my chest for a very high back carry then tie the straps knotless Tibetan. That said I use the onbuhimo way more. Like another commenter, I got my meh dai very cheaply on FB marketplace and I don't regret getting it to play around!

Thread: "Onbuhimo vs meh dai for high back carry"

I have a Happy Baby Onbuhimo and a LennyLamb Wrap Tai. Waaaaaay prefer the onbuhimo. I love not having a waistband and only a couple straps to adjust. It is much more compact for when I’m hiking or on the go. It doesn’t bother my shoulders when I back carry. Front carrying in the onbuhimo makes my body tired pretty fast. I’m still getting used to the tremendous amount of fabric and how to wrap the meh dai tightly. I MIGHT like it better in the fall/winter when I want babe to be snuggly, but I’ll probably only use it around the house and for neighborhood walks.

I used both with my firstborn but preferred the onbuhimo. I had back muscle already built up through workouts and found it immediately the most comfortable of all my carriers.

Thread: "Onbuhimo — quick up and downs for toddlers?"

An Onbuhimo has no waist belt so you put little one in and basically wear it like a backpack and you carry the weight with only your shoulders. You get them on really quick. But for some people it is uncomfortable. I struggle with neck and shoulder pain so an onbuhimo wasn’t my first choice but rather a fullbucke, as it contributes the weight over your body due to the waist belt.

Thread: "Anyone buy a structured carrier after getting tired of the wrap?"

Like many others we also have different wraps depending on need. My husband uses an ergo a au omni breeze exclusively, and always has. I used a moby wrap before she fit into the ergobaby, and I bought a woven when she was about two months old that I used for a bit, then summer hit and it got very hot. I also at about 3 months-ish bought a minimonkey mini sling (it’s like a ring sling but with less adjusting) and honestly that’s the one that has gotten the most use. It’s mesh so it breathes well and it’s super easy and quick to put on/take off. That said now it’s cooling down I plan on returning to my woven because it is warmer for baby. I’m also looking at getting an onbuhimo but haven’t pulled the trigger yet because she’s not sitting independently yet, but I think that will be easier for back carries until I work out the woven wrap and I am really looking forward to back carrying for getting more done around the house on clingy days!

No one *needs* any specific carrier, but I definitely enjoyed mine when my twins were young and just started using it again with my 8mo. I found the onbuhimo taught me how to get a baby onto my back, making woven wrap back carries easier. Edit: also I can get a fussy baby up in under 15 seconds with an onbuhimo, a "quick" ruck still takes me a minute at least.

I skipped the revolution, but I have both an OG and an onbuhimo happy baby carrier. Honestly, if you can afford both then I’d bite the bullet and get both. I love both of them and they are both so useful. The waistband for the OG is really comfortable and nice. The back carrying for the onbuhimo is AMAZING once you get there and your LO can sit unassisted I’m also a thinner person (5’6 and ~120lbs) and the waistband on the OG has always provided plenty of support

Thread: "Trying to choose a Happy Baby Carrier"

I have an OG and an onbuhimo. I don’t care to forward face so never considered the revolution. The OG is probably better than the onbuhimo as an all around carrier if you’re going to stick with one. I do get a lot of use out of both of mine so I’m glad I have both. I loved back carrying in my onbuhimo from 6mos-2yo. I’m loving it now for front carries with my newborn. The OG is better for long carrying sessions and is still comfy for back carries, but baby sits lower on your back.

chiming in as I have an original and onbuhimo, and have tried a revolution. I also decided to get a HBC bc it felt like such a hassle to use my ergobaby and hated dealing with the bulk. If you were to only get one, i’d definitely recommend the original. great support, super lightweight and packable. the onbuhimo can do front carry but was really meant for back carry, so best with a bigger baby. not having a waistband is convenient (like for me who has a growing pregnant belly), but it takes more time to build up the muscles needed to carry comfortably, and you still probably won’t be able to carry as long as in the original. Original can do back carry but babe sits lower and can’t see as well. revolution is nice if you absolutely insist on front carry as an option although it’s not the best ergonomically especially any longer than 20 min or so at a time, and can be over stimulating for babe too, though that depends on the baby. plus there’s a really short window of time when the baby is the weight and has the support that makes it comfortable to wear them that way. it didn’t seem worth it to me to have to add that bit of extra bulk, but that said the revolution still folds relatively small compared to others. I very regularly have my original buckled around my waist and worn like an apron between having my baby up and down and it feels like nothing, whereas with the revolution it’d probably be just bulky enough for me to take off in those instances. But yes, they have been worth it to me and as others have said they have great resale value, a lot selling more than retail even bc people like to seek out specific colors or sometimes buy ones that are nice and floppy/worn in. It would feel worth it to me even without the prospect of reselling later!

I really loved my onbubimo -- the high back carry and putting on my kid like a backpack with the superman lift just was so easy and he loved it. He hates back carries when he can't see over my shoulder. He's almost two now and I've transitioned to an HBC toddler carrier with his size and it's been a bit of a rough transition switching back to a apron style carrier for back carries.

What do you want to wear for? Long ups for things like hiking? For wearing during naps? For using while breastfeeding? For quick ups around the house? For grocery shopping? It really depends. I love my Original for naps. And if you want to breastfeed in a carrier this is the one you want to do it in (I have no first hand experience with this but it's what I've read). And if you want long wears this will probably be the most comfortable hour after hour. If you want quick ups for an alert baby where they can see what's going on in all directions, the Onbuhimo is your jam. Or if you want something with zero waistband. Or if you want to share with your partner (men tend to favor the Onbuhimo style). If you think your baby might want the best of the original world but also to see world facing then go with a Revolution. Each one is has its perks and its niche use.

Thread: "Tula explore reviews"

my experience has been that a carrier that advertises being able to do everything well is often kind of meh at it. whereas having a couple of different carriers that do different things can be more comfortable but then yes you end up spending more money. the exception to this is a woven wrap which truly can do everything comfortably, just takes practice and time. so if you plan on continuing to do daily or almost daily wearing for a long time, you might get more out of having a couple of different carriers that do different things. but if you're using it occasionally, once a week, etc., then the explore is fine. someone gave us an explore that i never use because i ended up getting an onbuhimo that i use almost every day with my chunky 16 month old
