Pros (+)

  • Comfortable for long periods of wear
  • Multiple carrying positions for versatility

Ergobaby is an enormous brand. Was she trying to sell it in a group dedicated to a designer brand? Once a baby carrier has basic features (like an adjustable panel and straps) anything else (usually just the brand name) is what inflates the price. I can’t say this loud enough. **Designer baby carriers are NOT safer or more ergonomic than midrange or even low end carriers.** You can get an excellent and safe fit for baby in a cheap stretchy wrap. There is a lot of unnecessary classist bullshit in baby gear, don’t get sucked in. There is absolutely nothing wrong with an Ergo carrier. ETA: Tula carriers are excellent quality and are ergonomic for both baby and wearer. They’re very well liked in babywearing circles in general and I can’t fathom what group would consider them garbage. A ‘cheap’ Tula is nearly $200, and they go up from there, I’d consider them to be a higher end brand. I don’t know what kind of group you were trying to sell your carrier in, but I would hold onto it. It’s very likely it will fit fine in a couple of months.

I have the ergo omni with gryffindor designs and I feel super cool in it lol. Siriusly tho, ergo is a good choice. it's super comfy, baby seems to like it, and it feels so supportive both of her and me. I had a wrap carrier that hurt my back. I wore her for 3 hours one day with zero back pain and I don't have a great back.

I love the Tula. The Ergo baby Embrace for her first months was also just right. The ergobaby omni is just too much for me. It feels so bulky. We kept it for husband but her never uses it anymore. Husband liked the babybjorn mini for the newborn times. The moby wrap was also nice for the newborn times but was a pain to wrap and unwrap when I was a sleepless zombie. Also the momcozy/tush baby hip carriers are nice in toddler days for when baby wants to be held but not confined.

Thread: "Going to be a new dad! Which carrier do I get? I've seen a lot of people recommend Mabe Monarch Carrier & Ergobaby Omni 360. So many options its stressful."

If you want to wear from birth you'll need something newborn-focused. The Omni 360 will likely be too big for a month or so (unless your baby is quite large), and the Monarch is very large and will fit at 3+ months for most babies. A *lot* of carrier brands advertise their carriers as being usable from 7lbs, but for most that's an over exaggeration to sell more carriers. If baby's head is covered or hips are overextended then it's too large. You'll need a stretchy wrap, woven wrap, ring sling, meh dai, or a newborn specific carrier like an Ergo Embrace for the first few months. My husband and I are similar heights (I'm 5'5", he's 6') and we easily shared a Tula Free to Grow. >The Omni 360 seems to win in a lot of polls. Major review sites you'd typically turn to for other products (like Wirecutter or the Bump) only review big box store/mainstream carrier brands like Ergobaby and Baby Bjorn. This is a big field of bulky, utilitarian carriers without much nuance or comfort IMO. Online reviews are even worse to filter through, as most people don't really understand how a carrier should fit or feel. Their 5 star review is glowing, but the photo they post of themselves babywearing shows a baby a peril of suffocating or falling. An Ergobaby is a safe, serviceable carrier. I would choose it over the Mabe. Are there better, potentially more comfortable options out there-- yes, absolutely. In general, carriers made from breathable natural materials are much more comfortable and temperature regulating (for both baby and wearer). Carriers that are padded all over are stuffed with polyester like a winter coat. They're hot and bulky. LennyLamb, Oscha, Happy Baby, Sakura Bloom, Hope & Plum, Integra, Didymos, Stokke Limas, etc all make nice lightweight carriers. Tula's Free to Grow is the less bulky cousin to an Ergo carrier, they have lighter fabrics but still have padded shoulder straps which I personally find comfortable. If you want my list of things to avoid while purchasing a carrier: - carriers made by carseat manufactures. They're largely terrible. Infantino, Graco, Chicco, Nuna, Diono, etc. They all make overcomplicated, poorly designed, bulky, hot carriers. I would include Baby Bjorn on this list as well. - most Lillebaby carriers. They're bulky and only have two seat widths (very narrow, and very wide) which leaves a ton of time (months!) where neither setting fits baby well. - buying a carrier on Amazon. There are a mountain of counterfeits out there, especially Ergobaby branded ones. Most (if not all) carrier manufacturers have their own websites and offer discounts and free shipping which tend to be a better deal, and you know you're getting an authentic product. - carriers without a waistband, like a Baby Bjorn Mini or Tactical Baby carrier. These are poorly designed and uncomfortable, all of baby's weight is on your shoulders and upper back. It's not a carrier design you can wear for any length of time. Edit: Thanks for the awards!

Whoa and I thought we were nuts to buy the ergo baby 360 omni for $150. We are very active people and hike a lot though so it felt “safe”? It reminds me of the snoo bassinet. Those things are like nearly 2 grand too. My husband and I both have well paid jobs so while we could afford some of these designer baby things I just don’t see the point to drop $10k on stuff for the baby’s first year. The uppababy line also comes to mind.

Yeah really. I gave birth a few weeks ago and my husband has worn our baby in our Ergobaby 360 carrier (with newborn insert) while grocery shopping and around the house. I'm not sure he's looked that different than this photo, just smaller? I have absolutely no idea what's wrong with the picture here... The fact that everyone here seems to agree it's problematic makes me worry that we are automatically going to be judged or that we are doing something harmful. Not a great headspace to be in in the weeks postpartum. 🫤

Post a fit check! That’s one of the main purposes of this group. If you are possibly wearing your baby in a way that’s unsafe, don’t you want some tips on how to change that? It’s not about being embarrassed or being judged, it’s about making sure your baby is safe.

I’ve been wearing my son in it since he was 2 weeks old, he was about 9lbs at the time. He didn’t like it the first time I put him in it, but we just bopped around the house for about 5 minutes and then I took him out. I eased him in and wore him around the house for the next day or so before fully going out in it. Then he loved it. He took at least one of his nap every day in it until about 3 mos and still does often, but not daily (5.5 mos now). My husband started wearing it too (at 3 weeks) he also took to it on him and we’re shaped very differently. Honestly I had to ease him in with all my carriers— I think babies just need some breaking in with new things.

I’m huge into baby wearing, so I bought one (along with Baby Bjorn, Ergo Omni, Moby, wild bird ring sling, one more I can’t even remember atm..), and functionally it’s nothing special, but it is beautiful. And to me that was enough. I love it, and I love that I don’t feel like a slob mom running all over town with unwashed hair and leggings on - it just levels up the outfit so much that I feel amazing going anywhere with it. It is $$$ and I still cringe at how much we spent but can’t say I regret it because it really made me feel beautiful. Do you need it? Absolutely not.

I wouldn’t call Ergobaby a fad, so much as widely available. In the United States you can get an Ergobaby carrier almost anywhere that sells baby stuff: to try this out I just typed “ergobaby” into Walmart’s search function, and the 360 is the top hit and is available for shipping. When I searched “kinderpack” and “Beco” there were no hits for either. So lots of people here have Ergos because they’re easy to get! I got an Ergobaby original as a hand-me-down from my SIL and used it with both my kids, it’s a great carrier.

The ergo is a reasonably accessible carrier that fits a wide range of sizes and has been around long enough to also have name recognition. It’s a good, solid carrier and isn’t really a trendy one. That being said I don’t recommend buying one new. Like many carriers they tend to be stiff out of the box and are more comfortable when broken in. Plus they’re everywhere so they’re easy to find secondhand at low prices.

My baby was huge and is only just now fitting into her ergo 360 at 2 months. On the box for mine, the recommended weight minimum says 12lb. Until now, I've been using a sollywrap quite effectively. Especially when she was a fresh newborn, I've found it a lot easier to adjust to fit her Scrunched up shape.

The irony is that baby Bjorn carriers and Ergobaby carriers are just as expensive as "boutique" carriers that are much higher quality. The ergo Omni 360 is $199, the Didyfix is $170. And 99% of people buy online regardless. I also don't think most new parents buy used, I always see people asking about registering for an Ergobaby carrier

Hey just a heads up, the omni 360 is designed to be used without an insert so using the insert from the older 360 model in it is actually unsafe. They are tricky to adjust for newborns though I agree, I've posted a comment with some tips as a reply to the original post. Personally I found a ring sling the simplest to use at that age. Also, here's a trick for the clip at the back (different carrier in the video but it works the same way) https://youtu.be/m3xwfVoNBHo

How much learning curve do you want to deal with. Low, medium, or high? The higher the learning curve, the more comfortable the carrier. Do you want a thin carrier, something with thick straps (thick straps aren’t necessary for comfort), etc. there are a lot of wonderful baby carrier brands, most of which the average person doesn’t know about, so may not show up in these polls. Personally not a fan of ergo baby (the embrace is a great newborn carrier, though, you usually need a separate carrier for the newborn stage).

Oh and if you haven’t tried the sling in a while — I did not like the wrap or ring sling when my babe was little and needed head support, but I tried a ring sling hip carry recently and was surprised to find I like it with a bigger baby! I would still use the Ergobaby as a first choice for comfort but the sling was a nice compact and less utilitarian-looking option. I used it to wear my baby at a wedding and called it formal babywearing haha.

No one here roasts parents when they post fit checks, but yes the judgement does tend to show when companies and influencers engage in bad behavior. You never want a carrier covering baby’s head or forcing their head forward. Baby’s head anatomy is different than an adult, pushing their head down can cut off their airway. This article has a good infographic about this if you scroll down a bit: https://www.carryingmatters.co.uk/sling-safety-how-to-use-a-sling-safely/ Having fabric physically obstruct their face limits the amount of fresh air baby gets too, which again is a suffocation hazard. It might seem like common sense that a baby needs to breathe air, but we see lots of fit checks where that’s not happening. Here’s an instructional video for using your carrier + the insert: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QmkOyYdl1NI It’s also worth saying that infant inserts + a bulky carrier are very very very hot for baby. You’re basically covering them with a bed pillow covered in a winter coat. Make sure baby is minimally dressed (or even just in a diaper) and monitor their temperature. Infant inserts are a clunky, dated bandaid that older carriers use to try to make them safer for small babies. They’re largely being phased out in favor of adjustable carriers.
