  • Adjustable straps for a secure fit

Cons (−)

  • Not ideal for all parents' needs
  • Challenging to achieve M-shape with framed design
  • Some find it bulky for everyday use

Why parents like it

The comfort and fit of the Deuter Kid Comfort are frequently praised, especially for long hikes. Parents appreciate the large head support that keeps sleeping children secure.

Common complaints

Some parents find the carrier does not meet their specific needs, leading to dissatisfaction. A few also mention that achieving the traditional M-shape with framed carriers can be challenging.

Best for

Parents who enjoy hiking and need a comfortable carrier for their child. The tradeoff is that it may not be ideal for those looking for a versatile everyday carrier.

Thread: "Osprey Poco Lt- child sleeping"

We had this too with our first backpack. We then changed to a Deuter Kid Comfort (not old models the latest new model, and not the “Air”) which has a LARGE curved head support for child when it sleeps. No head bobble, no crevices to get lodged into, etc. That’s all the advice I have sorry Edit: Updated model

Try it on in-store if you can. My wife and I both greatly preferred the fit of the Deuter Kid Comfort over the Poco. You can also find them used on FB Marketplace or Craigslist for a lower price since kids grow out of them before they're worn out.

I’ve borrowed them for trips. IMO, This is one of those thing you definitely want to buy used. People buy them all the time and then never use them. I’d check FB marketplace and any second-hand Childrens store.

We used a Deuter carrier and had no problems with the gear. My daughter on the other hand… I picked it up at a kids second hand store for $80 and we used it for a few months before our daughter decided she was done being in a carrier. She might have been 1.5 years old and there was still lots of room to adjust as she got older. I think I sold it or gave it away a year later.

Thread: "Best backpacks for hiking with baby?"

I live in and hike in the mountains, often with low shrubs, trees, and even downed trees on the trail. I was given a deuter kid comfort pack and it is not ideal for me! - the seat that baby sits in is very narrow. Baby constantly leans to one side and the seat gives her a wedgie. The leaning affects my balance as well. - baby is so high on my back and over my own head. This not only poorly affects my balance, but she is consistently hit in the face with greenery. - going up and down a steep slope is hard when baby is wiggling and leaning. - baby gets upset that she is not touching me and I have to keep one arm bent backwards so we can hold hands. Hurts my elbow! However, there are some benefits - there is a large storage zip pocket in the back. The downside is I have to take off baby to reach the pocket by myself - she is off of my body and does not get wet from my sweat - she can see and look around in the same direction of travel I much prefer the sweaty option of my regular baby carriers. However, there are loads of used hiking backpacks that are cheap and lightly used. You should try one because and no single item is perfect for everyone. You might really like the backpack especially if you have upper body strength. If you don't like it, there are other options for regular baby carriers!

Can't comment on the brand as I use the Deuter Kid Comfort (was able to get used on FB). But just wanted to note that I was able to check it for free on an international flight (Canada to Korea) as a baby item. I ended up stuffing a sleeve of diapers in the part where baby goes since the bag went in a big plastic bag at the airport.

I have used Osprey pocos new and older models. Remember that as long as you keep it in good condition then when your child outgrows it you can post it online and recoup all of your money back. So if you’re buying used it’s better to opt with buying a newer model as it’s easier to resell it. Although if you buy an older model it will always quickly sell for $100 or $150 if it’s in like new condition. Osprey poco is the Mercedes of carriers while deuter is also just as great it’s not as popular which takes longer to sell. I sell every model and color of poco and every model/color kid comfort. My top suggestion is “Blue Sky Poco Plus with rain cover”. And to answer the question every child carrier backpack is rated for max 48lbs. So roughly 9 months to 5 years depending on how much pizza and Mac and cheese your child eats. You can find my carriers on OfferUp and my name is Timothy I’m very easy to search

Thread: "Hiking Carriers - what to consider?"

Can I ask why you chose not to do the Deuter Kid Comfort, which seems like the one that gets the most love?

Thread: "Hiking Carriers - what to consider?"

Totally understand! Sometimes people find their standard carrier (Tula, Hope&Plum, Happy Baby, whatever their personal carrier is) to be comfier for them and baby than most hiking carriers. The Deuter Kid Comfort gets a lot of love as far as hiking carriers go, but I don’t think you can achieve the traditional M-shape with any of the framed hiking carriers. The Trail Magik is also a cool option for older toddlers/little kids who need occasional ups.
