Baby bjorn bouncer & ergobaby Omni carrier!
Thread: "Name brand vs. off brand"
I wish we had gotten a baby bjorn bouncer. My friend who had one got much more and longer use out of it than we did with a generic bouncer.
Thread: "Shopping Tips for a FTM (27w) - which baby items turned out to be your holy grail/not worth the buy?"
Just don’t! Buy as you need. You don’t have to have absolutely everything before baby comes (despite what the culture and social media tells you) remember buying random stuff on Amazon day of I actually needed and also returning a lot of stuff I never needed. Get the main things and then take a wait-and-see approach! I am on baby 3 and all I care to have are a few zipper cotton onesies, some burp cloths, a good newborn wrap carrier and a car seat seat lol Looking back some other daily used things would be a haaka pump for opposite breast, an infant bouncer like bjorn, a few Velcro swaddles Oh, and return that bottle warmer and sterilizer. Not trying to be rude, they are just frequently unused unnecessary items from experienced moms!
Thread: "Okay, so we know what baby products *weren't* worth it, but what products were?"
Baby bjorn bouncer. Expensive, but what a good tool. Baby can use it from newborn until at least 12 months. It is entirely powered by babies motion, and it is so light to move around. It was a safe place I could put baby when I wanted to shower (placed bouncer in the bathroom), or move wherever I needed in my condo - plus it can be folded up super easily. I brought it so many places for baby to sit and chill in.

Baby bjorn bouncer was mvp through 4 months for us. We had a reflux baby who hated being on his back. Hated being put down and wouldnt fall asleep anywhere but my arms and or his bouncer or a pile of pillows propped up on the couch. That thing helped us get him to sleep most nights and allowed us to eat food and otherwise do human things.
Thread: "Just buy the expensive baby carrier"
I love the Tula. The Ergo baby Embrace for her first months was also just right. The ergobaby omni is just too much for me. It feels so bulky. We kept it for husband but her never uses it anymore. Husband liked the babybjorn mini for the newborn times. The moby wrap was also nice for the newborn times but was a pain to wrap and unwrap when I was a sleepless zombie. Also the momcozy/tush baby hip carriers are nice in toddler days for when baby wants to be held but not confined.
Thread: "Representative from Baby Bjorn says Mini is ok even tho not hip dysplasia approved. Thoughts?"
It is correct that there is no evidence that a baby carrier can cause hip dysplasia. Probably no one will ever fund a study where babies are carried only in specific carriers to see if they develop dysplasia, so we won't ever know for sure. What we DO know is that for babies who already have hip dysplasia, the M position is considered therapeutic. So babywearing in a carrier that supports the M shape may actually help with hip problems. That doesn't mean other carriers are causing harm, but they don't have the same benefits. As a longtime babywearing educator, I don't try to stop people from using narrow-seated carriers if they are happy with them. However, if asked to recommend a carrier, I would recommend one that puts baby into an ideal M position - because usually that is more comfortable for both baby and wearer.

The Snoo, baby bjorn bouncer, fisher price piano mat.

Tubby Todd AOO for SURE! That stuff is amazing. Baby Bjorn bouncer aka her “poopin chair” that thing is an actual life saver. The bibs from Walmart with the turtleneck are amazing.
Thread: "Purchased the Baby Bjorn mini - should I return?"
I would honestly return the Bjorn just because it doesn't have proper leg support. I'd look at a Tula, Ergo or Lillebaby if you want a buckle carrier.
Thread: "Baby Bjorn Mini - why the hate?"
I think the main problems that people have with this carrier are the following: - it's not designed to wear baby in an ergonomical position. This can make exisiting hip problems (dysplasia) worse and can also be just uncomfortable for baby. - most fit checks I see here with this carrier also have baby's back too straight and the headrest up to high. The first put's a lot of stress on baby's spine. The second is a SIDS risk! - no back carry option, but instead forward facing. This is impractical for anybody who wants to babywear beyond 6 months of age for significant periods of time. - my personal opinion: it's not great value for money. It's possible to get ergonomic carriers that last much longer for almost the same price. If you both really enjoy this carrier, I'd say make sure that baby's hips are healthy (no signs of hip displasia), adjust the carrier to get a rounded back as much as possible and do not cover your baby's head beyond the nape of the neck. Generally, a good carrier will make it easy to achieve good fit and it can even be benefitial for hip development. That's not really true for the Babybjörn.
Thread: "Fit check: babybjorn baby carrier mini"
I keep seeing this carrier and the babies look so awkward and uncomfortable with their arms out the side. I know there are arm holes but can the arms go in and up by their face still? That would probably be much more comfortable for baby and help them settle and soothe. And the back panel is too high. Should only go to neck level.
Thread: "Why are Baby Björn carriers so popular?"
I wonder if it has something to do with the popularity of the Baby Bjorn bouncer. That’s considered “the best” from what I’ve seen, so maybe people assume the brand quality carries over to other products as well
Thread: "What’s the deal with the Baby Bjorn Bouncer?"
So full disclosure I never would have bought one myself at that price point but we got randomly gifted one from a coworker when we had our baby (brand new too, like what?!) we were so grateful and also shocked haha. I have to say, it has been amazing. My colicky reflux baby was the most relaxed ever in that thing, and it also made her poop (blessing and a curse, especially for those riiight up the back ones), it’s easy to wash, easy to store, sleek and babies can bounce themselves in it which mine absolutely loved. Now my baby is a toddler and it’s still her favourite chair in the older kids setting, she loves bouncing in it and rocking all her soft toys in it. We will have to put it away soon though as she’s about to exceed the weight limit but it has served us well. We haven’t kept many things as we’re not sure when or if we’ll have another, but we are keeping the baby bjorn bouncer for sure. I’m aware I sound like a straight up advertisement right now and like I say I think the price point is insane, I’m sure there are other bouncers that are as good for much less, but we loveeee ours.
Thread: "What’s your favorite baby carrier?"
I’ve flown with my baby a couple of times with the baby bjorn mini and it was fine. Just so you know (because I didn’t!), you can’t wear baby through security or during take off/landing. It seems obvious now looking back but it was really fiddly getting her in and out of the carrier when I was flying alone EDIT: Looks like you can baby wear through security in some airports!
Thread: "Why all the hate for BabyBjorn if they’re recommended by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute?"
When I was browsing BabyBjorns I feel like I remember some being hip healthy and some not. Like the Babybjorn harmony says in the description that it is considered hip healthy but the mini does not have that same description.
Thread: "Name brand vs. off brand"
On the flip side, we have had a fisher price bouncer (about 1/4 the price or less of the baby bjorn) last through 15 years and 8 kids (passed from sibling to sibling as they had kids.) Personally, I can't imagine shelling out for the baby bjorn when the fisher price has worked so well for so long at such a lower price.
Thread: "Representative from Baby Bjorn says Mini is ok even tho not hip dysplasia approved. Thoughts?"
I think they want to sell carriers. This is an existing product with a ton of positive reviews out there and they’re obviously not going to abandon it, because money. They’re not going to bash it, of course they want to talk it up. Personally, I don’t want to use a product that has the potential to be problematic or uncomfortable for my kiddo. He was not screened for hip dysplasia, so it’s unknown if this product could worsen an unknown hip problem. I want babywearing to be a pleasant bonding experience, not uncomfortable. I’m assuming as more parents educate themselves about babywearing and hip positions that these carriers will fall out of favor. Obviously Baby Bjorn has taken note as they now have wider carrier options. I’d put this into the same category as smoking, people used to do it everywhere including hospitals, but we now know how harmful it is and it’s not as prevalent or tolerated in public spaces.
Thread: "Why are Baby Björn carriers so popular?"
This is it, too. Everybody and their mother has a Baby Bjorn poop chair (AKA bouncer). It is literally a staple for babies now. It makes sense that people would choose other things they make.
Thread: "Baby Bjorn Mini - why the hate?"
If I were to strictly answer your questions: it is just as functional, and it is not unsafe (or at least: it will not kill your LO and LO won’t fall out). However, there is more to babywearing than just those things, ergonomics being a very big one. Baby Bjorn carriers are notorious, so-called, crotch danglers. If you position LO in it, they are only supported in their crotch and their legs will hang straight down. This is less noticable in newborns, because they are smaller. Babies hips are not fully developed at birth. The joint forms after birth and whilst your baby grows. So, a correct (=ergonomical) position is super important to make sure that the joint develops in a hip-healthy way. When you wear LO in a crotch dangler (such as the baby bjorn mini), the joint can develop in a way that promotes hip dysplasia. Note that I said: can develop. This risk is not the same for all babies: some babies have a higher risk than others, this is in part genetics. However, since there is no certain way of telling whether or not your LO is likely or not to develop hip dysplasia, it is wise to avoid the risk. This is the reason it is recommended to wear your baby in a carrier that supports from knee to knee and where LO sits with their knees higher than their bum. This more or less mimics both their position in utero, and the way that we would’ve carried them if we still were apes and had fur (observe how chimpansees carry their LOs on their belly after birth and you’ll see what I mean). That said I’d recommend that you look into a different carrier, especially when you LO grows bigger. There are great carriers and lots and lots of different types, there absolutely is something for everyone. Buying second hand can be a great option if you cant spend much or want to try multiple options but dont have carrier library/babywearing consultant nearby. Ideally you would look for something that has a wide (almost square) backpanel, that has a way of adjusting the base to accomodate both smaller and bigger kids. The waistband and such dont matter as much, as long as its comfy for you both and doesnt stand in the way of an ergonomical position. I hope this helped!
Thread: "Okay, so we know what baby products *weren't* worth it, but what products were?"
Baby bjorn carrier for us. I wore baby all winter long in that thing. Now she is 8 months and facing outward and loves it.
Thread: "Ergobaby Embrace or Babybjörn Mini?"
No to babybjörn. The child has to be supported from knee to knee. Ergobaby is so much better
Thread: "Purchased the Baby Bjorn mini - should I return?"
Return it, it's not a well thought out carrier for you or baby. Front facing carriers are a bit of a gimmick in my opinion as well, because when baby is front facing it pulls your centre of gravity forward too and hurts your back. It can also lead to over stimulation and doesn't allow baby to snuggle in close to you when they've had enough and want to sleep. I really recommend finding a local sling library so that you can try them on before buying, or if there isn't one available, try something like a Tula, Integra, Ergo, Manduca etc, where baby can be worn on your back - where they can have a good view of the world, but still fall asleep safely and comfortably, without breaking your back!
Thread: "What’s your favorite baby carrier?"
I’ve flown with my baby 4 times and have been able to baby wear through security every time. I have pre check? So maybe that has something to do with it? Idk
Thread: "holy grail baby items"
My baby is also a reflux baby and I second all this about the baby bjorn bouncer. A lifesaver.
Thread: "Ergobaby embrace vs baby Bjorn mini, which one would you choose for first 6 months?"
The embrace is stretchy and could get uncomfortable around 15 pounds but there are people that have it worked for longer. The embrace is super ergonomic (when adjusted properly). The mini won't last you for more than a couple of weeks, max. Your child will outgrow it by the next couple of weeks. Your concern about the hip issue is right. It's never proven that a narrow based carrier causes hip problems but it can worsen an existing condition. It's also hard to get a good position for the child overall and it'll definitely become uncomfortable when the child is around 3 months old. Keep the embrace. Post a fit check in it to see if there's something that can be done about the head (babywearing a newborn without head control is almost always never hands free and you need to support the head when bending forward or bouncing).
Thread: "What’s the deal with the Baby Bjorn Bouncer?"
This is by far my favorite thing we have. It allows our baby to sit completely upright which really helps with reflux and spit up after feeding. He also has the best poops while sitting in that chair 😂 Like others said, washable, foldable, etc. My baby did not care for a vibrating bouncer or swing. He just loves to bounce in the Bjorn. We use it every day during every wake window because it helps him digest. It’s his favorite place. I think the price is ridiculous, but it’s been worth every penny. If I knew how much we would have used it before we bought it, I would have easily paid double.

Use daily: * Baby Bjorn bouncer (though I'm sure plenty of cheaper ones would fill the same purpose). * Happiest Baby on the Block (book) * Sleepea Swaddle (Happiest Baby on the Block) * Fisher-Price piano mat * No-name Electric nail file from Amazon * FridaBaby Nosefrida Snotsucker * Extra strength Zincofax * Multitude of burp cloths * Spectra beast pump Wasn't worth buying: * Too many clothes they grow out of too quick or never end up wearing. * Any impractical clothes (she basically lives in 2-way zipper outfits like Pekkle brand) * Halo Swaddles (always escaped arms in swaddling) * Baby nail clippers and manual files * No-name breastfeeding pillow
Thread: "Why all the hate for BabyBjorn if they’re recommended by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute?"
Yes, and there are soooooo many really great carriers that never make that list because companies don't want to pay to get on it. Especially European companies that make woven wraps (and carriers) don't pay since the hip dysplasia organization ist mostly US based. u/inpursuitofrx: There are no half buckles and no woven wraps on that list. Every woven wrap is hip friendly. Even the most hip friendly since it's the most adjustable and most versatile. There are no weird "in between stages" where the baby is too small or too big for one setting. But companies would have to get an approval for every single of their woven wraps. Companies like didymos release like, what, 20+ woven wraps a year? Some of them in limited quantity, some of them only for educators... Etc.
Thread: "Baby Bjorn carriers bad for baby?"
Afaik, it's not all baby Bjorn carriers, just the Mini, which has a narrow base. From what I can tell by the manual, the Harmony will be fine once you get the adjustments worked out. Do note that altho it says 7lbs, if your baby is not 21", the carrier will not fit at that weight. IDK why carriers state weight when height is much more important for fit.
Thread: "Baby carrier recommendations"
Following as I’m also interested in carriers and peoples recommendations; however I am aware the baby bjorn mini is not recommended by the hip dysplasia institute! There’s a list of approved carriers here https://hipdysplasia.org/hip-healthy-products/
Thread: "Why are Baby Björn carriers so popular?"
The irony is that baby Bjorn carriers and Ergobaby carriers are just as expensive as "boutique" carriers that are much higher quality. The ergo Omni 360 is $199, the Didyfix is $170. And 99% of people buy online regardless. I also don't think most new parents buy used, I always see people asking about registering for an Ergobaby carrier
Thread: "What’s the deal with the Baby Bjorn Bouncer?"
Considering my daughter spent most of her waking hours in it, other than tummy time and our arms, I'd say it was not overpriced. Edit: MIL got one of the cheap-o ones. Daughter won't go in it. Guessing it's a comfort thing. Can't say. But she does not like that one.
Thread: "Baby carrier recommendations"
I would seriously consider looking at secondhand with an £80 budget. The Baby Bjorn Minis look ok until you get them on and realise there’s no waistband so baby is effectively hanging off your shoulders. They feel very heavy very quickly. Also, the seat for baby is very narrow so it’s tricky to get a proper froggy legged M shaped position which is important for hip development. The One is a much better Bjorn option. Loads are available secondhand and often barely used. Ergobaby carriers are worth a look but again, secondhand. A sling library is a great idea as you can try before you buy and get fitting help which is invaluable. There’s a real art to carrying safely and comfortably. There are groups around where you can get advice and fit checks too. I carried my first in a variety of carriers and have a totally different selection this time and I’m still learning every day.
Thread: "Purchased the Baby Bjorn mini - should I return?"
I would return the Bjorn. I find them not to be the most well designed or functional carriers. I would get a long woven wrap (like a Didymos or a Storch or something, no brand preference as long as it's woven). All the reasons you love the Moby in a fabric that will last until you can't carry anymore. I can easy support a 55 lb, 6 year old in a back carry in a woven wrap—I just am not strong enough for long time carrying! These carriers are super functional and work as a blanket, scarf, changing pad, pillow, towel, a costume, and even [a hammock or swing](https://www.joyfulabode.com/how-to-make-a-woven-wrap-hammock/)! Or a Mei Dah. This is a great two shoulder carrier with a smaller learning curve. It can be easier and faster to put on than a wrap. It is great for all shapes and sizes so two people of different physiques can wear it. It can be worn reversible. It folds up pretty small. Or a ring sling. Only one shoulder. But great for front and hip carries, super poppable and quick to use, can use on back and easy to slide it to that position too which is nice. I use a sling or pouch constantly with a toddler when they want to go up and down a lot.
Thread: "Shopping Tips for a FTM (27w) - which baby items turned out to be your holy grail/not worth the buy?"
Absolutely get a baby Bjorn bouncer. You can get them secondhand. It is an absolute lifesaver for baby to sit, easy to move, and it’s the poop chair. 99% of the time, will help baby poop!
Thread: "Baby Bjorn Baby Carrier Mini -do I need to get rid of it?"
IMO no you don’t need to get rid of it, however you may want to start researching if you want to babywear long term. Once baby gets about 15 lbs, both the Solly and the Bjorn will not be comfortable for either of you.
Thread: "Best infant carriers?"
I think it’s important to look up proper babywearing positioning before making a decision. First off, baby’s knees and bum should always form an “M” shape. Baby should face you and be in a froggy position, like they were in utero. Their spine will hold a natural “C” shape. Some carriers, like Baby Bjorn Mini and Infantino Flip, simply just do not allow this shape and can cause hip displaysia because the seat is too narrow. It’s like hanging from a harness. So when shopping, look for the M and the C! If you look up Baby Bjorn in the group you can see how babies dangle from the crotch. This is not what you need! Front facing is an option lots of parents look for, but it’s not the best positioning for baby and is only recommended for 15-20 minutes at a time once baby is over 6 months and has trunk control. I find it more a hassle than not because it’s just so darn uncomfortable. If baby wants to look around, a carrier that back carries or a ring sling hip carry is a great option. I started back carrying my kiddo at 5-6 months old so I could cook on Thanksgiving! With all this said, my favorite carriers are Solly or Moby wraps for newborns, a woven wrap or a ring sling for newborn through toddler, and Tula Free-To-Grow for 15 pounds and up! No insert necessary. My husband and I interchange the Tula and it’s easily adjustable to different body dimensions. It’s also a very fairly priced carrier and they have lots of patterns and colors and materials (check out BST groups on Facebook!). Happy baby, Ergo Baby, Artipoppe (pricey!), Lenny lamb, and Lille Baby are also reputable brands!
Thread: "Representative from Baby Bjorn says Mini is ok even tho not hip dysplasia approved. Thoughts?"
The fact of the matter remains that the IHDI refused to approve this carrier whether they "worked with" them or not. If the IHDI felt this was a safe carrier, they'd approve it. The fact that they didn't speaks volumes more to me than a person whose job and income rely on selling this item telling me whether it's safe or not. Whether carriers can *cause* hip dysplasia or not, they 100% can worsen an existing condition, and to focus and word it they way it is here really weasels out of responsibility for the fact that these kinds of carriers can and do cause worse problems for babies who have hip dysplasia. So there is no evidence carriers *cause* hip dysplasia but actually also no evidence that they *don't* and there is evidence that an M position is better. As a parent that's really all the information I need to be unwilling to use a carrier with poor hip positioning, no matter what a sales rep says.

Baby bjorn bouncer (2nd hand), close caboo baby carrier, mamaruga zensling baby carrier when bigger, fleece or knit footless onesies for the colder seasons, tidytot coverall aprons with suction suckers for sticking to the highchair (from Amazon). Floor bed for cosleeping. Nipple shields for feeding support before tongue tie was cut. Bamboo reusable breast pads.

When mine was on the 3 nap schedule in the early days, he would sit in his baby bjorn, doing his "I'm sleepy but wont close my eyes" angry stare while my husband bounced him off to sleep while we ate dinner and watched TV. Those easy naps (and subsequent easier nights) were totally worth the cost!
Thread: "Baby Bjorn Mini - why the hate?"
While I don’t dislike bjorn as much as many people, some of their carriers are relatively wide now. They also have a weird thing with pinning babies arms outside the carrier. It’s just odd, particularly in a newborn carrier: little babies are much happier with their hands beside their face and their whole arm supported. Not dangling. I think you can tuck their arms in but the instructions are arms out the arm holes. Otherwise the bjorn mini specifically relies on a big headrest rather than supporting babies upper back and therefore their neck/head. The back panel is actually quite stiff, it’s soft but not flexible. It’s just not great for support and comfort and it’s a rebreathing and asphyxiation risk https://a.storyblok.com/f/110854/x/efae74d184/bc-mini_om_us_v4_202108-hr.pdf
Thread: "Ergobaby vs Babybjorn"
Baby Bjorn mini will not grow with her and isn't a great carrier anyway. Ergo baby Omni 360 should be fine, though if baby is small lengthwise as well as weight-wise, it might not quite fit yet. But it will grow with her for a good while. Some people don't love the bulk, but if you can tolerate that it's a perfectly good carrier. If it has to be one of those two carriers, the ergo wins hands down. But are you considering any other carriers? And have you done any fit check (here or with an educator) for the wrap? I'm going to try summoning the automod link to a buyer's guide on the subreddit's wiki page. Automod wiki
Thread: "Baby Bjorn Baby Carrier Mini -do I need to get rid of it?"
It doesn’t tend to fit for very long but as long as: - you keep the head uncovered - you make an effort to keep baby’s thighs supported and in a M (use scarf hack if necessary) - baby’s whole back is supported. Then it’s fine, and for some people the lack of waist and separate parent harness can be beneficial Also not safety related but don’t put baby’s arms out the arm holes. It’s just uncomfortable and makes it harder to get a proper fit. https://youtu.be/0Q9BcllSp6k?si=LbrmFynZ9vYegqjj https://youtu.be/o8GfUSgSDcE?si=iCBoCbg1MahhG98u (View in landscape on phones. Thread: "Baby carrier advice - babybjorn mini or ergobaby embrace for newborn?"
The Mini is a poorly designed and outdated carrier that goes against all best practice for comfort and safety. The Embrace is one of the best carriers on the market for newborns up to 6 months.
Thread: "Babybjorn vs ergobaby?"
Definitely the ErgoBaby Omni. The BabyBjorn Air only has two panel width positions and incorrectly promotes a “legs in” position with baby’s face covered for newborns. Neither carrier will fit until your baby is around 3mo. In the meantime, a stretchy wrap, ring sling, or newborn-specific carrier like the Ergobaby Embrace will work better.
Thread: "Help! Baby Bjorn Mini vs Free Carrier"
Ergonomics of the seat aside, the mini has no waist strap, so all 14 pounds of that baby will be right on your shoulders. Most people find it stops being comfortable for the adult once the baby hits 12 or 13 pounds. I'd steer clear of newborn focused carriers with a 3 month old.

I think it would be easier to look on this sub for carrier recommendations, there are tons of posts about this that can be super helpful ♥️ Generally for structured, full buckle carriers around this price point people love Tula (my personal recommendation too, I have an Explore and my husband has a Free To Grow), Lenny Lamb and Ergo carriers, but I'm sure I'm missing a few! I was personally still using a stretchy wrap when my baby was this small but I don't know if it's worth getting one 6 weeks in, but baby might be a tad too small for the great options that they won't outgrow super quickly so it might be worth making your own post asking for recommendations for your specific situation :)

Some of the baby b carriers have a zip under the butt on both sides for younger babies like yours, that when closed will bring the legs ups more towards the M shape. You could check if that is the case for you!
