Thread: "Baby Bjorn Harmony - fit check please 🙏"

Hi! I’m so glad you posted. This is a suffocation risk as is. Headrest needs to be folded down so baby’s head is fully visible. I believe it can technically come up to the bottom of their ear. The waistband also needs to come up to bra band level so that baby is easily kissable and visible. Once you make those changes I would post a new fit check.

When I was browsing BabyBjorns I feel like I remember some being hip healthy and some not. Like the Babybjorn harmony says in the description that it is considered hip healthy but the mini does not have that same description.

Hi! The baby should be higher, their head should rest on the bony part or your chest right below the collar bones. You would need to place the waistband higher to achieve it. Also, please fold the head rest down. The panel height shouldn’t exceed babies earlobe. The chef’s kiss would be a nice pelvic tilt :)

Afaik, it's not all baby Bjorn carriers, just the Mini, which has a narrow base. From what I can tell by the manual, the Harmony will be fine once you get the adjustments worked out. Do note that altho it says 7lbs, if your baby is not 21", the carrier will not fit at that weight. IDK why carriers state weight when height is much more important for fit.

Yes, and there are soooooo many really great carriers that never make that list because companies don't want to pay to get on it. Especially European companies that make woven wraps (and carriers) don't pay since the hip dysplasia organization ist mostly US based. u/inpursuitofrx: There are no half buckles and no woven wraps on that list. Every woven wrap is hip friendly. Even the most hip friendly since it's the most adjustable and most versatile. There are no weird "in between stages" where the baby is too small or too big for one setting. But companies would have to get an approval for every single of their woven wraps. Companies like didymos release like, what, 20+ woven wraps a year? Some of them in limited quantity, some of them only for educators... Etc.

To add to the other comments: your back strap needs to go up between your shoulder blades. As you move up the waistband, you'll tighten the shoulder straps even more and with the adjustments now it'll prevent you from doing so. To easily open and close the strap you want your shoulder straps all the way open before putting baby in. Then put the baby on the waistband, pull up the panel, put on the shoulder straps and the back buckle should be at your neck. Close the back buckle, then tighten the shoulder straps. Or search youtube for the tshirt method in carriers. I'll also just add: don't be discouraged. Every carrier has a learning curve. It's like learning how to ride a bike. We'll all start from scratch, we don't know what we're doing and we need someone to hold onto to the saddle and run after us at first. That's us we're guiding you where to put your feet and how to pedal. You'll be riding on your own in no time.

Happy baby OG is stellar. I haven’t tried a baby bjorn, but I’d get a HBC with no hesitation. If you want to have the world face option HBC does have one!

Your carrier shouldn't be squeezing you like that, are you plus sized by chance? I have had major issues with many carriers due to my size, what you are describing isn't normal. The shoulders are not meant to be weight bearing, so waistbands are important to reduce strain on your shoulders. Carriers aren't designed like that because they aren't very good for the body, and they aren't great for baby either. Based on how you are describing your issues though, I think you would like a Babuebaby carrier. The "waistband" is designed to sit on the hips so weight isn't on parts of your body that shouldn't take it. It reduces strain on the pelvic floor, takes all weight off of the shoulders which protects your joints from damage (you may like the harmony now, but bearing weight like that will have long term consequences). Check out the @babuebabycarriers instagram, the owner/creator Busi (on OT) has been posting about this stuff a lot in the last few days.

Also - she most likely has another type of carrier and asked another forum or babywearing group and got that info. She doesn't mean harm but wants to share what she's heard and wants to "protect" you. The process of learning something new and "valuable" and sharing it with care and openness is something us as parents need to work on constantly and it takes a lot of time to know how to articulate things. I've learned that because I did say so, too years ago when mine was little.

There’s a few that are similar but they’re not as nice. There’s a couple of infantinos(very narrow), Nuna Cudl, and Joie Savvy, and the seraphine caripod but that one is horrible, Chicco Soft & Dream Baby Carrier(yikes), You may also like waistbandless carriers like the onbuhumos (not all do front carrying), tactical baby carrier, bjorn mini, chicco ultrasoft etc. Honestly the reason there’s not a lot with the separate parent harness as you describe is because they don’t generally support the baby well and the weight is meant to be on the waistband. Look at hiking backpacks vs kids backpacks, the ones for longer use or more weight put the weight on the waist or hips; not the shoulders.

Not an expert but the women from the babywearing academy says the harmony is the “best of the baby bjorns” but also says in the comments that the internal panel can be limiting for some people. So if you have it and it’s working for you and still supports baby knee pit to knee pit that should be fine? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Carrier preferences are very individual. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7JSBjs86El4

It’s expensive but you might like the hope and plum meh dai. I’m sure there’s other similar ones but I’ve only tried theirs! I found I could get the most customized fit from that. Personally hated the happy baby and didn’t try Tula.

Can you post a fit check with your other carriers? What you’re describing isn’t typical, and I’m wondering if you don’t have your shoulder straps configured correctly.

I would try posting a fit check with your other carriers! The waistband shouldn’t be squeezing your hip bones- usually a good fit requires the placement to be on your waist or even higher

As another commenter said, it's only the narrow-based seat Babybjorn Mini and Original that aren't highly regarded for baby's seat position. The Harmony, to my knowledge and experience, is a-okay to use. We got one when our baby outgrew the disparaged BabyBjorn original carrier, which I got for free. The Harmony has a nice wide seat base for baby and you can get the M shape hip positioning with it with adjustments to where you wear the waistband, tucking the seat under baby's bum, and how loose or tight the shoulder straps and sides are. As scorned as it is on reddit, my husband, baby, and I adored the BB original. We found it to be the easiest carrier to take on and off, by ourselves, in a parking lot, even my dad figured it out and used it. Baby would always fall asleep in it. My husband loved it so much (and hates the free Ergo original I started using when baby outgrew the Bjorn original) that he splurged on the Harmony. It's a lot more finicky to get set up for using it in the beginning and I found the directions weren't great on when the leg zippers should be open, but it became really easy to use after those initial first two times. The padded lumbar support is really nice too.

we were able to try the omin breeze and harmony at a baby store with a weighted baby doll and landed on the harmony - it was the most secure and we were able to get the best M shape with the weighted baby. I personally thought the strapping/adusting was easy. If possible really recommend finding a store if you can! I am in Socal and they had a babylist store in Beverly Hills but I've heard Nordstroms has some carriers in store too

You guys is there anything wrong with the baby bjorn harmony? I tried a few and that is the one that hurts my back the least - although I do wish the waist piece was a buckle to get it to be tighter sometimes I just don’t see anyone recommend it in these groups!

I got ours at a garage sale and it seems to be an old old one. I looked at their site and the comparable ones seem to be the mini or the one. Looks like if I could choose one though I’d get the one air or the harmony because they have the waist strap and that seems like it’ll be good when she’s heavier. It’s incredibly easy to get her in and out and had given me so much confidence going to the store and on errands alone. I also wore her in wraps early on and had such a hard time getting it tight enough that she didn’t start to ooze down me as I walked. She would wake up SCREAMING after a few minutes if I made it any tighter and I always felt like I was crushing her feet. Structured carriers are just always going to be consistent and I like being able to adjust things by straps.

The BabyBjorn Harmony carrier is so comfortable to wear! My husband and I both absolutely love it. It is so easy to adjust and our baby loves it. We also ordered the Konny Wrap Flex as a soft carrier and we got 2 and it was nice to have 1 and wash 1. We had a Beluga Baby but it is difficult for us to get the right fit in all the places. It is also comfortable for both my husband and I to use. Easy to load in the baby. Baby loved napping in both carriers when we were out and about. They also make arms up swaddles that our baby adored. Everything is made of really nice fabric and materials.

Baby is 8 months, 18ish lbs, and we have the Harmony newborn crotch zipper unzipped and the leg gusset zippers closed for chest facing. I'm pretty sure we would unzip these for outward facing, but we haven't done outward facing yet and I'm reluctant to try it because I've read baby shouldn't be in that position for longer than 30 min because it's not good for their spine, and they can't sleep in that position.

FTM here and not a babywearing expert. I would recommend waiting to see what you/ your baby likes if you aren’t planning to use it until later. But I understand wanting to be prepared. Before my girls were born I bought a moby wrap, ring sling and had a hand me down Ergo Baby that I bought an infant insert for. I wanted to make them all work since I spent money on them, but there were things about each that just didn’t work for us. I eventually caved and bought a Babybjorn Harmony and we love it. But i feel like it’s one of those “you don’t know what you don’t know” type of things and the features you need/ like will just depend on you. Definitely have a look at them in store if you can!
