Thread: "Fit check: ergo embrace vs baby bjorn mini"

These both need some work-- I'm 99% sure you have the Embrace panel rolled the wrong way, this looks super short/uncomfortable/awkward on baby. Their spine should gently curve outward and they should be seated, but right now they're majorly contorted and in an upright position. You'll also want to make sure your waistband is level all the way around. Here's an instructional video for this carrier, made by a babywearing educator: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SltEolRd41E As far as the Baby Bjorn, this tends to be a difficult carrier to fit well. I think you should be able to lengthen the panel a little bit so baby has support up to the nape of their neck (don't flip up that headrest, just adjust the panel length itself). The seat is already too narrow in my opinion, baby's legs are drooping which isn't ideal. Once the Embrace is adjusted properly that will fit a lot better than this one.

I’ll deinfluence you a little. Work got me an Artipoppe because by the time I went on leave I didn’t need anything. I also got a hand-me-down Baby Bjorn and Ergo (I actually have no idea which Ergo). I also got a Moby wrap. My baby was too small for a structured carrier for ages and then she would cry in structured carriers until she had head control. I used the Moby exclusively until she was about 4 months. I actually will get a BabyDink next time because I found the soft wrap so handy in the early days. Now she’s older she’s in a structured carrier. There’s barely any difference between the Ergo and the Artipoppe. I mainly use the Artipoppe because it is a little easier to get on alone but really they’re much if a muchness. Don’t use the baby bjorn at all - pain to get on and I don’t think baby is comfortable in it.

Chances are, you didn't hurt your kiddo using this carrier. As I understand it, some babies are at increased risk of hip problems, and you can't always tell in advance which babies are more likely to actually develop hip displaysia. If you carry a high risk baby around a lot with their legs dangling straight down, it doesn't help. But if you carry them in a carrier that supports good hip positioning (the M shape) that might be protective and help prevent actual displaysia from developing. If your baby isn't at risk, then the M shape is still likely more comfy (my kiddo got blisters from a baby Bjorn 😭😳), but the crotch dangle position isn't going to ruin their hips all by itself. Anyway I'm not a doctor or a physiotherapist or anything but that's my understanding after reading up on it!

100% agree with the baby Bjorn sucking lol. I have an old one I got for free and I only use it very very sparingly when my kids want to face forward. It's so uncomfortable for me and they just kinda dangle off of me so I know it can't be comfortable for them for a long period of time. It's like way too tight on my waist and I can't get it tight enough on my shoulders.

I would seriously consider looking at secondhand with an £80 budget. The Baby Bjorn Minis look ok until you get them on and realise there’s no waistband so baby is effectively hanging off your shoulders. They feel very heavy very quickly. Also, the seat for baby is very narrow so it’s tricky to get a proper froggy legged M shaped position which is important for hip development. The One is a much better Bjorn option. Loads are available secondhand and often barely used. Ergobaby carriers are worth a look but again, secondhand. A sling library is a great idea as you can try before you buy and get fitting help which is invaluable. There’s a real art to carrying safely and comfortably. There are groups around where you can get advice and fit checks too. I carried my first in a variety of carriers and have a totally different selection this time and I’m still learning every day.

Thread: "Review: BabyBjörn One Air Mesh"

I don't like babybjörn as a company. They sell you something as great, do heavy marketing and haven't changed their carriers for decades even though it has been proven more than 10 years ago how a hip healthy carrier should be. They've tried with the one. The bb one has a better seat. Yet, the company relies on thick plastic fabric (like you said - it's not airy or mesh) and a bulky carrier (their original and mini bb is lighter and thinner but it's not great. Other hip healthy carriers pack even smaller than the mini). Other companies have evolved (like ergobaby and even lillebaby, stokke even bought limas to make their carriers great). Babybjörn also still makes the same old bouncy carrier since the 60s, no matter how many attention marks they put on those, they know people will use them as containers for more than extended periods of time and as sleeping devices (I know that it's not the company's fault but other companies re-design their products if their peers don't use them as intended). They buy themselves into baby store chains with big cardboard ads and cater to new parents. So to me they prey off unknowing parents and baby's safety. They also pledge climate friendly but I think that's green washing, considering the fabrics used. I don't know why they've gotten a red dot design award for their carrier. But I also think that the red dot design award sometimes gives the award for things not that award worthy. Maybe you can buy this one...

Thread: "Baby Bjorn Free vs Mini"

And you are dead set on one of these carriers? Personally, I’ve always found the bjorn carriers with adjustable seats are terrible at getting a proper fit and M position in. I’ve experimented with them personally and I’ve never seen one in the wild where the person achieved a good fit. If you have to go with one of those two, then the Free. If you have to go with Baby Bjorn brand, then the One. If you are open to other carriers and brands… well I would look into the Tula Explore (my favorite!) or Ergobaby Omni 360x

Thread: "What is the best baby carrier?"

I didn’t like wraps. I could never get the seat right. I have the Ergo Baby Omni Air 360 and a Baby Bjorn One Air. I liked the mesh in both of these and found it easy to clean. My husband liked the baby bjorn so we got that for him. Then I wanted something slightly different and we got the ergo baby. It was a pouch which was very useful for holding phone, keys, etc. I did lots of baby wearing early on, including a move across the country at 2.5 weeks when baby and I flew solo. It really helped in the airport. Then for going on walks and getting out of the house during maternity leave in the winter. I could bundle up, but her in the carrier and wrap a big coat around both of us to stay warm. kiddo is almost two and we still use the carriers from time to time.

Thread: "Purchased the Baby Bjorn mini - should I return?"

I literally just got the mini to try out. It is a total no-go. There is absolutely zero back support. I couldn’t wear it for more than an hour which in my opinion is ridiculous. Altho I don’t like the buckles and adjustments on the Ergo Baby, it has far better support. Trust me - you don’t want back problems!!! Try the Baby Bjorn One - I’m getting it tomorrow to try out. It’s going to give good back support without the bulk and buckling like the Ergo I think. I also want to try the Lillebaby. Heard amazing things!

It depends on you, your built, and what is comfortable to you. I’ve tried and owned so many carriers and finally tried the babybjorn one and I love it! It fits me perfectly, I can easily get baby in and out no probs by myself and it’s comfortable. I used a stretchy solly wrap when she was newborn and liked that a lot too but my kids grow huge super fast so I didn’t use it long.

We also have the baby delight and it’s been great so far. I can’t imagine what the baby Bjorn has that the baby delight doesn’t. They’re very similar in style, and the baby delight seems well made, easy to wash, and durable. Plus I love it comes with the toy bar, which the baby bjorn doesnt.

Thread: "Opinion on ergobaby embrace"

I have the exact same question as the OP and your thoughtful response helped me decide to go with the Bjorn Mini and to return the Ergo Embrace I bought. I have the Bjorn One and have used it more than any other carrier. I just want something soft (jersey fabric) for my newborn who is due in July. I used a Solly wrap with my first and found it hard to get accustomed to and not as supportive as I needed. I also have a Wildbird ring sling, but it is not ideal for a newborn in my opinion because it's just not supportive enough. I had an older Ergo 360 with an infant insert that I sold to a friend. I didn't love it, though it got the job done with my first. I'm excited to try the Bjorn Mini despite its clear unpopularity on this forum. Glad to hear you can get a decent 'M' in your baby's knees in the Bjorn Mini. Your firsthand experience is sincerely appreciated!

Thread: "Babybjorn Harmony or One Air?"

I have the Babybjorn One Air Mesh. It’s fairly easy to use and I find it the most comfortable when baby is just past the newborn stage but still wants to face inward and be snuggly. I’ve used it to wear my babies facing out too. I’ve heard that’s not great for their hips but they both reached an age where they really wanted to face out but were still a bit small to ride in the grocery cart or we weren’t somewhere stroller friendly, so I did it for short trips. Honestly facing out for longer than that gets very uncomfortable for me too. And you can also back carry with it when they’re 1, but for me it’s very uncomfortable. I could never get the baby high enough on my back to feel comfy. The baby would be digging into my sacrum or hips. With the waist band and band going from shoulder to shoulder tightened, it feels very restrictive to me in the front. My babies did seem to feel comfortable in it. I’m a 5’2” woman and I think I’m just the wrong height and proportions to back carry with that carrier. I like to have the baby higher and carry the weight in my shoulders so I recently bought an onbuhimo. It will depend on your preferences! Final note I just personally feel like the carrier looks kind of tactical and masculine lol for me I don’t love the looks of it! But for others it may be perfect!

Thread: "Baby Bjorn Free vs Mini"

The baby Bjorn mini was great for us when baby was a newborn but I feel like she sized out of it really quick. We had already bought the One but couldn't get a good fit with her as a newborn (hence buying the mini). My husband also struggled originally with the One waistband as he doesn't have much of a waist. I don't have that problem but my boobs meant I struggled to get a good fit on the mini. I see a lot of hate for Baby Bjorn here but I definitely don't think the One is too narrow for a proper M (unless you have the zip setting wrong). At 3.5 months I felt like we could no longer get a good M with the mini, which is when we stopped using it but I also think I was being over cautious due to having another suitable alternative. We do a lot of walking across rough ground and I broke my back 10 yrs ago but don't have issues with the One, that's just me personally. I think it's all really dependent on body shape and use. We also try and stop regularly (30-40 min) on walks to make sure everyone is having fun and let LO kick her legs, touch leaves etc.

Thread: "Best carrier?"

I got ours at a garage sale and it seems to be an old old one. I looked at their site and the comparable ones seem to be the mini or the one. Looks like if I could choose one though I’d get the one air or the harmony because they have the waist strap and that seems like it’ll be good when she’s heavier. It’s incredibly easy to get her in and out and had given me so much confidence going to the store and on errands alone. I also wore her in wraps early on and had such a hard time getting it tight enough that she didn’t start to ooze down me as I walked. She would wake up SCREAMING after a few minutes if I made it any tighter and I always felt like I was crushing her feet. Structured carriers are just always going to be consistent and I like being able to adjust things by straps.

I have a Moby Easy Wrap, a Baby Bjorn One, a Stokke Limas and a ring sling and the only one I wouldn't recommend is the Moby. The Limas is my most used, everyday carrier. I like that it's a half-wrap style so feels supportive and adjustable without being too bulky. My husband likes the Baby Bjorn the best and uses it most outdoors. The ring sling is the most versatile and portable though, so I often throw it in the diaper bag if we're going out and I don't know whether we'll need a carrier or not.

Thread: "Baby Bjorn claims another victim."

Theres not many carriers with a separate baby harness like bjorn. In general this is because it makes it difficult to get a good fit for baby plus mostly people seem to prefer not to have part of the carrier between themselves and baby But there are certainly people who prefer this style. And it can be safe I would also recommend that you consider a half buckle or meh dai where you put baby in and then just bring the straps across your back and most of the gaffing happens in the front for front carrying but I know some people are uncomfortable with knots. Firstly I don’t think the Bjorn Harmony is “bad”. It’s not my preference but it’s perfectly fine for those that enjoy it. I do find the price a bit much. If you did want a bjorn this is the model I would recommend https://youtu.be/7JSBjs86El4?si=-KpfrkqyZ4m7F5xo The “one” is just ok https://youtu.be/7Rn9iYMtSUo?si=0RSg0vgw3eTERa6C The “move” has a fairly narrow base but if you still own it and if it currently fits then you can use it https://youtu.be/YEKqFEgD9F0?si=cbbSQVc4dlzQszQD Infantino also makes a bunch with a separate parent harness. Most commonly the flip. This carrier is kind of awful and really difficult to get a good fit in: it has two settings only: narrow and wide. Narrow is basically too narrow for any baby. Wide is probably ok from 3 or 4 months. Then it only works until it becomes too narrow There’s another one and it’s gone right out of my head. It’ll take me a minute to find it then I’ll edit ETA: Chicco does a couple. Some are over complicated (close to you) and most are fairly narrow (ultrasoft, easyfit) Mission critical baby carrier is sort of similar but it doesn’t have a waistband and isn’t very adjustable Still not the one I’m thinking of ETA 2: Joie Savvy is one I’ve never heard of. Here’s a good review https://youtu.be/FkT42XMjcWo?si=QRTNCO2wPzNdAV3u Must be the nuna cudl I was thinking of. I’m running out of ideas. Maybe it’ll come to me https://youtu.be/2zC1SkllTGw?si=FlpiVylqkqz9y4N7

I also back carry my toddler in a Tula, but mostly when we’re out of the house. She’s 33 pounds and quite tall. When she outgrew the baby bjorn, I spent way too long carrying her on my arm. Not my hip, my arm! She hates being on my hip and instead perches her little behind right on my forearm, which I hold perpendicular to my body. That was the only way she was happy! Anyway, after an exhausting trip to Disney where I carried her that way all day for five days in a row, I decided to get a Tula. It took some practice and a few tearful practice sessions for her to get used to it, but now she loves it! She says I’m her horse!
